Waufle, Jackson in. Board, Tollner out?

The Raiders have hired a new defensive line coach and offensive coordinator.

The defensive line coach is former New York Giants assistant Mike Waufle. Waufle has worked as an assistant with the Giants since 2004.

Waufle had interviewed with the Redskins, though word is he was interested in heading back to the West Coast, to be closer to his family.

This is quite a homecoming for Waufle. He was the Raiders defensive line coach during the Gruden years, from 1998-2003. He also coached at Cal from 1992-97. Prior to that he spent time as the line coach at Oregon State, UCLA and Fresno State.

Of course, this would mean that current defensive line coach Dwaine Board is probably out.

In addition, former Baltimore Ravens’ quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson has been hired to the Raiders’ offensive coordinator position. Tom Cable held those duties last season and even if he is retained as head coach, it was expected that he would be relieved of his coordinating duties. This hire most likely means some shuffling among offensive staff. Passing game coordinator Ted Tollner would either be let go or he would be demoted to his previous position of quarterbacks coach while current quarterbacks coach, Paul Hackett, would be fired. Al Davis is unlikely to hold onto and pay for coaches he feels are unnecessary. And since demotions are seldom taken well, it is more likely that Tollner would be let go.
