Raiders Week 3: Ballers & Busters

(Photo by Patrick Patterson)How is it that this Raiders team seems to be regressing? They go from a well-played loss against San Diego in the opener, to an ugly win in Kansas City to and even uglier blowout loss to the Broncos in Oakland.

This time there was only one defensive stop. And the Raiders gave the ball back two plays later on a turnover. There was only one timely turnover. And, the Raiders gave the ball right back to the Broncos two plays later on a turnover. No that was not a typo, both times the defense made a good play, the Raiders gave the ball back two plays later. And both times the Raiders gave the ball back, the Broncos capitalized on the mistake with a score.

The Broncos had 21 first downs to the Raiders' 9. The Raiders drives looked like this: 3 and out punt, two plays interception, three plays interception, 12 play field goal, 5 play end of first half, punt, 2 play fumble, punt, 3 and out punt, 4 and out loss of downs.

Meanwhile, the Broncos didn't punt until THE MIDDLE OF THE FOURTH QUARTER!

So who is to blame? Oh, where to begin. Let's begin with who is not to blame. In this case- the Ballers. Then we can move on to the worst of the worst in the disguisting mess we witnessed (well those of you who weren't subject to the blackout) on Sunday.

Ballers

Nnamdi Asomugha

They only threw to his receiver once in the game and it was the second the last play of the game. The catch was made by Marshall on a perectly thrown ball. It had to be perfect because Nnamdi had great coverage on the play. As usual Asomugha was forced to make his stat line contributions in other areas. After JaMarcus Russell had his second interception (more on that later) of the day to give the Broncos another short field, Nnamdi stopped the Broncos' rusher on third down to force a field goal. On the Broncos next drive he was all alone on the outside on a sweep and tackled the running back in the open field for minimal gain. Then later he sniffed out a sweep again and tackled the runner for no gain. Denver was called for holding on the play. One other time he forced the running back inside where he was tackled for no gain. Not only is he the best true shutdown corner in the league, but he has the run stuffing skills of a strong safety or a linebacker (Although, no linebackers on this team).

Michael Mitchell, Tyvon Branch, Michael Huff

Every week Tyvon Branch and Michael Huff continue to impress. But now you can add Michael Mitchell to that. Branch played the Broncos tight ends extremely well in this game. He also led the team with 10 total tackles. He had 6 run stuffs and 2 of those were tackles for loss. He also had a pass defended. Mitchell was seeing his first action of the season coming off of injury. His first tackle, he teamed up to stuff the Broncos on third down and goal. The Broncos would go for it on the next play and be turned away for no score. In the third quarter when Warren forced the fumble on Knowshon Moreno, it was Mitchell who was on the ball to recover it for the Raiders. He had two other tackles on running plays. One of those was an absolute run stuff at the line on third down to end the Broncos drive at 3 and out. Huff played another solid game. He was working on his tackling all offseason and it has paid off. His first nice play, he came all the way up to stop an end around for a short gain. A few drives later he had a pass defended with the Broncos on third and goal to force them to settle for another field goal. On the first drive of the second half after a big run by Correl Buckhalter, Huff stopped him from scoring as the last line of defense. A role that Hiram Eugene was always most known for. This is one truly impressive group of safeties. And it has been about 25 years since the Raiders have been able to boast that.

Sebastian Janikowski

He had just one field goal but is that his fault? He was given one chance to score and he converted. It wasn't a chip shot either. It was from 48 yards out. He kicked the ball so hard, it almost cleared the top of the net. That is a lot of pent up aggression. He also kicked all of his kickoffs into the end zone with one touchback.

Busters

Darren McFadden

Before I get into specifics, let me say this: THREE FUMBLES!! THREE!!. He took the first carry for one yard and he fumbled on his second carry of the game. It was recovered by the Raiders but with a six yard loss which caused a three and out to start the game. On the next drive for the Raiders (that didn't end with a JaMarcus interception) he fumbled again. It was recovered by the Raiders again but was for another loss of 5 yards. A nice hard fought catch and run by Zach Miller was the only thing that got the Raiders back into decent field goal range. Then in the third quarter after the Raiders recovered a Bronco fumble to put them in the last best chance to score, McFumblen put the ball on the ground for the third time. This time on the Broncos 5 yard line. The Broncos would take posession and drive down for a field goal and the final result of 23-3.

JaMarcus Russell

While McFumblen wasn't handing the ball to the Broncos, JaMarcus was tossing it to them. He had two interceptions on the day. Both were forced throws to Darrius Heyward-Bey in double coverage and both resulted in Bronco scores. Hey, Russell's completion percentage was over 50% though...for 61 yards! That man is a check-down machine. Of his 12 completed passes on the day, only 2 were not either a check-down or a screen. Both went to Louis Murphy for a total of 25 yards. Russell's best play of the day was on the Raiders final drive with the game well out of reach. He tucked the ball and ran 16 yards through wide open field with the Broncos all playing for the deep ball. Isn't it time to sit him down yet? The Browns benched Brady Quinn this week and he was in the same first round with Russell.

Chris Morris

It think it might be time to try Samson Satele out at center again. Satele wasn't this bad on his worst day. And if Satele just needed some time to acclimate to the zone blocking scheme, he must be better by now right? Oh well on to the game. The first time we heard Morris' name was when he was being called for holding to negate a nice first down run by Michael Bush. Then three plays later he couldn't block his man and McFadden was tackled for a loss on the play. Then, later in the game, he had his really horrid drive. It was only five plays and three of them were Morris mistakes. After a Denver penalty gave the Raiders and automatic first down, Morris had a hold, gave up a run stuff and then gave up a sack to end the series. Thanks Chris!

Kirk Morrison

Some may consider this to be an injustice putting him down as a buster considering much of the game he was being asked to cover Brandon Marshall (for some odd reason). Covering the opponent's number one receiver is not typically in the job description of a linebacker. But, in even those instances, he played so far off of Marshall that the receiver was able to not just catch the ball but pick up the first down each time. And in one instance; a touchdown. Morrison gave up both touchdowns in fact. The second one, he could have stuffed just prior to the goal line but Knowshon Moreno drove through him to get the touchdown.

Cornell Green

Gave up a drive ending sack in the third quarter and committed a drive ending holding penalty in the fourth quarter. Green has a spot reserved for him on the Buster list almost full time it appears.

Darrius Heyward-Bey

Once again, he was absent from the stat sheet. He had two passes thrown to him. Well, intended for him anyway. On the first pass, he tripped and fell and it was intercepted. The second one was overthrown into double coverage and it too was intercepted. JaMarcus Russell said during the week something to the affect that his receivers are not running the correct routes. I think he may have been speaking of Heyward-Bey specifically. He should not have started the season if he can't run the correct routes. He has started three games so far and has caught a total of ONE pass. Chaz Schilens could do better on crutches.

Tom Cable

What the hell is wrong with this team? The defense was so confident all week coming into this game and then they go out and play uninspired football. And as I said a moment ago, if Darrius Heyward-Bey can't run the correct routes, why is he starting? Why isn't Jonnie Lee Higgins starting? Why is Javon Walker not even active? Walker was the talk of training camp with his recovery from his secret surgery and the show he was putting on for the media in practice. Walker claims he was ready to go week one and yet instead of Cable putting him in the lineup, the Raiders have to suffer through two rookies running the wrong routes and dropping passes. The Raiders looked utterly incompetent against the Broncos and that falls squarely on Cable's shoulders. I understand that there is only so many plays that can be called with a quarterback who can't seem to hit the water from a boat. Rich Gannon said that he gives Cable a lot of credit for his handling of Russell up to this point and so do I. My only stipulation is that it is either at or very near the time to sit Russell down. It is Russell's third season and Cable is treating him like he is a rookie. The fans deserve better. The rest of this Raider team deserves better. They deserve a chance to win.

this is a great, great post-game editorial that helps bring great closure and recap to games as good and as bad (yesterday) as they can be. higgins ans walker's absence very fishy in the air (moss). defend the dink, dunk play of other qbs or continue to squander. think charlie frye is the better of the three with touch and strength for al's need to cover the field deep. read the tea leaves, russel is does not show commitment or promise. 25lbs overweight and should be a 30million dollar chiseled with muscle stud. instead that money is a nice green, lifelong hammock.

I don't disagree about Russell, but people need to realize that this kid is NOT going to be benched this year. Like it or not, he will get every opportunity to turn it around. It does no good to call for his head or continue to boo him. Al doesn't listen to anyone and he's got 30+ million reasons to keep Russell as the starter. Next year may be a different story but this team will go the way of Russell in 2009... And right now that's not good news.

You missed John Marshall on the Buster list. You touched on it, but who the hell lets Morrison cover B Marshall all day. Make a friggin' adjustment. At the very least put a damn safety on the guy. Better yet, make sure Nnamdi is shadowing him.
Aso
written by NvRaiderFan(Bill), September 28, 2009
Anyone see Denvers first TD? Did you see the BALLER Aso dive at the RBs feet? Aso has got no heart so the rest of the D follows that. Raiders Suck. Nothing going to change that this year. Looks like another high 1rst rounder this year. The Raiders will just draft another bust.
#7 Traded for Moss = BUST #7 Huff = not worthy of the pick #1 Russell = BUST #5 D-Mac = BUST #7 Heyimfastbutcantcatchorgetopen-bey BUST. What about our 1rst rounders before then? Harris, Bucannon, Bryton, Washington. What a joke of an NFL team.

I don't care how much JR is being paid he is playing like a 3rd string emergency QB and should be treated that way. JR is bringing the rest of our offense down to his level of play and this is not a good thing.
As Haley has said already this season with Cassell, if he isn't playing well he will be benched, doesn't matter how much he is being paid. Cable needs to do the same. His job is on the line and if we continue to play like this all year we will be looking for a new head coach yet again.
Frustration
written by xobn1050, September 28, 2009
I am a lifelong Raiders fan living on the Midwest and as I am writing this I can only feel frustrated with this team. I had been looking for positives all these years and keep coming to the reality that no matter who the coaches are,who the players are or came from for whatever the reason they can snap out of this prolonged slump of poor play and ineptitude. I have to believe it all ends up on the main ideas of how the Raiders play football. The deep strike offense of play action passing and the man to man pass coverage with only four down lineman putting pressure. Other teams don't need to scout the Raiders prior to a game, all they need is to watch NFL classics from the 60's and 70's and see uus playing the same schemes and doing the same plays with great difference on the results.
Staying Frustrated
written by xobn1050, September 28, 2009
Since Gruden left the Raiders you would think the Raiders would improve just by the sheer number of high draft picks this team has accumulated. Just to think that all these picks have been made with the thought of keeping the Raider football principles alive: Asomugha,Brayton,Buchanon,Napoleon Harris,Fabian Washington,Gallery, the trade for Moss,Huff,Russell,McFadden and Heyward-Bey. Out of all these high picks only Asomugha has kept his side of the bargain but everyone else has been a dissapointment or waiting for results. People say the Raiders draft first round busts and really apart from this years draft when supposedly the Raiders reached for DHB all these picks where highly graded and even rated as sure fire quality starters potential. All these people that argue know that when Gallery was picked he was supposed to be the franchise cornerstone left tackle,Huff the playmaking safety,Buchanon and Washington cover corners,Brayton the pass rushing end,Harris a tackling LB machine,Russell a franchise QB and McFadden a playmaking RB. Isn't it odd that to various degrees all have failed to deliver for the Raiders.
...
written by Junior75, September 28, 2009
No offense Bill but were you drunk when you watched the game. Denver's first TD was a pass to Marshall. On Moreno's running TD in the 3rd quarter, Aso was the only reason Moreno didn't walk into the end zone untouched. He dove over the guy blocking him and wrapped Moreno around the legs causing him to have to reach for the end zone.

Be critical if you want, but be accurate.
More odd situations
written by xobn1050, September 28, 2009
Going back to this years team, why is DHB starting if he doesn't run the proper routes and isn't where he is supposed to be? Why our insistence on just pass rushing with four lineman when it's obvious it's not effective? Why our starting linebackers seem to be always out of position or can't get away from blocks? When they do make a tackle it's after giving up 5 to 6 yds? Why have the luxury of having the best cover corner in the NFL if he is not on the opposing teams best receiver at all times? Why do we keep Todd Watkins on the active roster when apart from one catch he hasn't done anything? Why they don't play their most veteran WR (Walker) who should know how to run proper routes and can't really do no worse than our current starters? Why keep on playing Cornell Green at RT when he is always good for at least one sack allowed and at least one holding and false start penalty a game? Why sign Khalif Barnes if you are not going to use him? I know Russell has been bad, but playcalling, protection,WR play have also influenced him so much that he is playing tentative and scared of the mistakes that he eventually commits. Why can't the WR run shorter routes and help release the pressure of our teams QB? Only Coach Cable and Al Davis have the answers of all these questions. I hope for the teams sake they have answers to all these questions soon before already stating to look forward to the draft again as early as it has been for the last years. This type of play only augments the ridicule and disrespect the Raiders franchise and their fans have been enduring for the last 7 yrs. Don't know if any fan base can take this any longer.

J Marshall shouldn't be on the list. Its not his fault his guys can't tackle, they were in place to make the play's but just didn't because Moreno and Buckhaulter looked like Terrell Davis this week. That stop on the goaline was impressive.

I can't keep watching this offense do nothing and then have everyone say, what happened to the D. I noticed that the D stopped taking their helmets off because they knew they were going out in 3 plays.

I have no idea why we didn't pound the football and we start out throwing the football 50 yards down field on our own 2 yard line, if your going to throw it and you have a young QB, start with some progression, when Millers stats are up so is the rest of the Offense. Denver ran the ball 20 more times than the Raiders did.

Tebow
written by NvRaiderFan(Bill), September 29, 2009
Can Tebow be an NFL QB? Junior, So I was wrong when the TD happend, my bad. My point was that Aso did not have the heart to take the man at the hips and give proper lift to stop the RB BEFORE going in for an easy TD. Our whole D was looking scared at tring to stop denvers running game. This is getting out of hand. What good is it to have the best CB in football when teams don't even have to throw the ball, they just do like Forrest and RUN! I would trade Aso right now for one player that is a BA and wants to step up in front of a charging RB and stuff the run. Our D is weak and lacks heart, and yes this includes Aso.
Give Russ a Break.

At what point does starting Jruss when it is OBVIOUS to everyone INCLUDING the Quarterback himself that he needs to be on the bench become counterproductive? The guy has TOTALLY lost his confidence, and continuing to run him out there is just going to make matters worse. You have heard time and time again that “Throwing a young QB to the wolves” is NOT a good Idea because thier psyche just gets destroyed to the point that it can never be rebuilt (See Andrew Walter in Tom Walsh’s offense).

At some point we MUST go with another QB, it is obvious that he is regressing, it is a sign that his confidence is shattered and that he doesn’t believe in himself anymore–and his teammates don’t believe in him either. Sure they can all say that they still have faith, and Russell can say that it rolls off him like water off a ducks back, but that is the Bravado, the Macho tough guy talking, Not the real person that is JaMarcus Russell, if the truth was to be told he would probably say, “I have no buisness being on the field, and I am absolutely KILLING my teams chances at winning a game, someone else needs to give it a try because I don’t want to be the reason for another season flushed down the toilet”

Al is forcing Cable to play Jruss at the detriment to the entire organization–This kids shattered psyche will fall directly on AL and entirely blame the coaching staff for not “coaching” him properly. He has one of the best QB coaches in the game today-The problem is Jruss is not ready and he has lost his confidence. AL is blind. Keep throwing him to the wolves, and he will be seeing a sports psychologist by the end of the year.
What is that smell?
written by SnBsn69, September 29, 2009
I really don't care if its JR, Green, DHB or whoever. This team, this organization is not what I fell in love with 40 years ago. In AD's case I don't believe old = senile (young people can get just as dysfunctional as anybody else). What I do believe is that Rich Gannon is right. In the basement of the Alameda facility is huge pile of old swagger gone bad. The stench of it fills the nostrils and dulls the senses of everyone who enters the building.

"...keeping the Raider football principles alive: Asomugha,Brayton,Buchanon,Napoleon Harris,Fabian Washington,Gallery, the trade for Moss,Huff,Russell,McFadden and Heyward-Bey..."

Apparently not because the first thing we do with new players seems to include marching them to the basement and pushing their noses down deep into our rotting past and expecting them to grow roses out of it. If the Raiders are to be successful again, they need to clean the basement. That old crap is killing the organization and the spirit of everyone associated with it. You know what happens to a great bottle of wine after 40 years. Well, if well cared for and tended to it can taste great. However, when you go through vintors the way we go through coaches, all it can ever be good for is cleaning windows and septic systems. I have lived my fan life on that swagger most of my adult life and spent the last decade plus several years before Gruden ducking questions at parties and at work with "Team of the decades! Three rings! The Tooz!" Well I have told all my friends on Facebook and MySpace and wherever I see them. I am a Raider fan and will be forever. I was an Angel fan in 1970 and still am. But I am not happy about it. I got out of a marriage that treated me better than this (she only went bad once). So come on Al. Clean the basement. Let us dump this load we're carrying and change the way we do business. Rely on the future, look to it like an opportunity. You were an innovator (NOT AFRAID TO CHANGE YOURSELF, YOUR LEAGUE, YOUR WORLD). Get someone who can lead change, lead people, lead you. The best leaders know when to follow, change and adapt. The Raiders are failing in every category. Clean the basement. Get out out of the Three Rings circus tent before the elephant crap overtakes us all!

SnB, totally with you on everything you said. I'm 35 years old and for 35 years I've been a Raider Fan. I grew up under the shadow of the colisium. I live for the Raiders, A's and the Warriors. I also am sick of avoiding my coworkers, friends, and familey because I have no answer for what the Raiders are doing on the field. The Raiders have turned into a silly weak team, gone are the days of greatness. Pride and poise? Comitment to excelence? PLEASE!

written by Junior75, September 29, 2009
Bill, I understand your frustration but you might want to watch the TD again and you'll see your frustration should not be with Aso. Aso was being blocked on the outside and managed to shed his blocker, go over the top of him and make contact to bring him down. He is the wrong person to blame for that TD and I think his effort on that play was a great example of not giving up. His blocker had the better position but he stayed with it and managed to be the only defender to touch Moreno.

I would agree with your assessment about the rest of the D. But to play devil's advocate, when they are on the field as long as they are, it becomes tough to do anything. This team has to get better on offense and fast.
Raiders D
written by NvRaiderFan(Bill), September 29, 2009
I think that if our Ds problem was just being on the field to long then that would show in the 4th quarter. Denver was smacking us in the mouth all game long. The O is what it is, young. I've never seen a team start 2 rookies at WR. Zack Miller is getting doubled and seeing alot of bracket coverage. Teams do not fear our running game because Tom Cable is so quick to abandon it early. The D we are running is the old bend but do not break D. Thats why the Raiders seem to play better the closer the O gets to the endzone. We are playing scared on D and tring to have J-Bust win it for us on O. This is not going to work. Its time the Raiders run it 75% of the time with all 3 of the RB's and start playing a more aggressive style of D. If we are down 21 to 3 in the 4th quarter you got to stick with the run, its who we are. 1rst down RUN 2nd down RUN 3rd down RUN 4th down (if there is one) PUNT! Here is an old rule of football, first down pass incomplete then on second down they are going to run. Everyone knows this, CABLE QUIT CALLING PASS PLAYS ON FIRST DOWN YOU IDIOT! J-Bust might beable to handle managing a game where we run it 75%+ of the time. Any thing else is doomed to fail. At least we have the best punter in the NFL, now lets try to use him more instead of turning over the ball. I can't belive I want to see more punts, sad.

I think this article is great. I just wish the Raiders would start Schilens (when he's back) and Walker with Murphy as the three. It would give Russell some experience to work with. Not to mention hands. I'd also like to see DMC split out more often if for no other reason than to keep him from fumbling.

And they should keep Mitchell in the starting line-up. If Huff is healthy, leave at Nickel

It's also very easy to double a tight end and keep extra players in the box as well. Maybe we should get Myers in at tight end and splitting Miller out at receiver a little to make the double teams harder.
Yep, itsmemane

That's who I'd like to see starting too, Schilens, Walker, and Murphy, maybe Walker in the slot? Let DHB practice and start those who are ready to play. I really wanna see if Walker can return to form, I wanna see what he's got. We have the potential to be stacked at WR after a little development, maybe then a little 4 WR set smilies/cheesy.gif Come onnn Russell smilies/sad.gif I'm pulling for him and I was pretty disappointed when Schilens was injured, I knew we would really need him, hopefully Russell regain his composure with Schilens back, we shouldn't be starting two rookies, I really wonder why Walker's not out there. We're gonna need all the help we can get with this streak of teams coming up.

I'd sorta like to see Branch Huff and Mitchell on the field at the same time, maybe with some kind of rotation of Huff or Branch at Nickel if they can handle it. Meyers has really performed from what I could see, I thought he would turn out to be a solid pick.
