Raider fans boycott, Eagles game blacked out

As expected, the Raiders game this weekend in Oakland against the Eagles will be blacked out locally. The lack of support will seem commonplace to most NFL circles outside of the Raider faithfull. But many members of the Raider Nation know better. Sure there is the economy that is hurting the blue collar fan base to go along the usual amount of fans that have little interest in supporting a struggling team but this time, it's personal.

In recent seasons there has been a growing call for a boycott of all things Raiders. Not the least of which would be game tickets. As if the six (going on seven) double digit losing seasons wasn't enough, the extracuricular happenings have been building on the nerves of those who live and die by their beloved Silver and Black and slap down their hard earned money to see them.

The rumblings really started to get loud prior to last season with the news of Lane Kiffin receiving a resignation letter from Al Davis. Then the pissing match that ensued which culiminated in Lane Kiffin being fired after week four of the season. At that point it seemed obvious that Al Davis was putting the Raiders and their fans through another mess of a season just so he could save some money by firing Lane Kiffin "for cause". Whether it was the right decision to fire him was not the issue. It was the timing and the manner in which it all went down.

Now, after a season that ended with some hope for a turnaround, the Raiders look perhaps worse than they have ever looked. The poor play of JaMarcus Russell is the immediate reason for the ineptitude but, like any bad seed, you have to look at the reason behind it. First fans looked at Tom Cable but now the object of their scorn has shifted back to the man at the top.

The general feeling I have gotten is that things are at their breaking point and the fans are saying "Enough!". There has been a outcry to boycott this weekend's game. I have seen many fans on many seperate occasions saying something similar to "Don't buy tickets for this game. Tailgate all you want but do not under any circumstance attend the game."

If were a few isolated fans it would be one thing. But for the first time, I am hearing and seeing that exact same sentiment across the board. This is the first time I have made any commentary on the situation. As a member of the media, it is my duty not to inject my opinion or to attempt to organize such a boycott especially if my intention were to talk about said boycott and/or protest immediately following. (Afterall, we are not Fox News and you are not "Tea Baggers"...so to speak).

Just like any great nation, the Raider Nation should stand up for it's right to protest and the right to organize. Boycotting is a form of protest which is a manifestation of the right to freedom of assembly, the right to freedom of association and the right to freedom of speech

The purpose is to send a message. A message that many in the Raider Nation feel, Al Davis has been ignoring for a long time: "We won't coninue paying for inferior product."

Mr Davis pulls the strings because Mr Davis writes the checks. And right now it appears that those strings are keeping certain players in a starting role in a futile attempt to justify their draft position and their hefty paychecks.

The problem with that logic is that, those player paychecks will be sent regardless. But winning product is what will ultimately him to make the money with which he can fund those checks. You know the saying "Don't let your mouth write checks that your ass can't cash?" Well, right now not only are fans not rushing out to buy a JaMarcus Russell jersey, but they seem to be making a concerted effort to not buy any game tickets.

And unlike waving flags and yelling into a bullhorn, this message is seen in empty seats and heard where Al Davis has no choice but to listen: his pocket book.

Highly doubt it's a boycott
written by P. Fitch, October 16, 2009
If you are an Internet nerd and read everything posted on the Internet about the Raiders you will notice a few fans calling for a boycott. Thing is, this is not the first time the Raiders will have low attendance at a home game over the last 7 years. I am sure a few people talking boycott will take credit for the low attendance, but the truth is Raider fans don't want to watch the Raiders get blown out. In other words, fans wouldn't show up for this game boycott or not.
Boycott won't hurt as much as you think.
written by Junior75, October 16, 2009
Most of the money the Raiders make is due to revenue sharing through TV contracts with the NFL. A fan boycott may look good and make the fans feel better, but it's not gonna be a major hit to Al's pocket book.

For the most part the only people boycotting are the ones who are buying single game tickets. Season ticket holders have already paid for their tickets so why not go to the game. The season ticket holders who say they are boycotting are still selling their tickets so that others can attend, making their stance weak at best.

Okay, short-sighted, fair weather, so-called Raider fans. When the team improves, and the team will improve, the decision to stay or leave after the season may have been made.

"Short-sighted, fair-weather" fans? Maybe in 2003 and 2004, those statements would be true. For a team that coins itself as the "Team of the Decades", what we Raider fans have been seeing on the field for the last 6 years is UNACCEPTABLE. The only "Commitment" we have been seeing lately is a "Commitment" to Davis' image, nothing else. The Kiffin firing press conference was a glaring example of this.

IT'S THE RAIDERS OR THE F'KING HIGHWAY..LOOKS LIKE ITS GOING TO BE THE F'KING HIGHWAY!...YEAH MOTHERS..THEY WILL WIN AGAIN IF AND WHEN THEY GET A GM AND HIRE A COACH LIKE GRUDEN WHO MOTIVATES THE OVERPAID RAP STARS ON THE TEAM...THEY SIMPLY DID NOT SHOW UP READY TO PLAY IN NY..GRUDEN WOULD HAVE NONE OF THAT SHIT!

You lost all credibility with comparing the Raiders situation (sports/entertainment) with the current political mess. Teabaggers (the protesters) require teabagges (you).
don't go, fine with me

A boycott is stupid because of several reason, a couple have been pointed out already. The way ticket sales are split 60/40 after 15% is deducted for costs of game, Raiders only get to keep 51% of the ticket take. Consider that each team receives approx.$8,000,000 from tv, and a sold out game for the Raiders generates approx $2,500,000 from ticket sales. TV revenue is where the money comes from.

Stay home, the real fans will be at the game if they can. It is so nice to be able to go to the restroom, grab a beer and be back without missing anything during a TV timeout. I'm at every home game as I have been since the Oakland Raiders returned to Oakland. I have missed 4 games including preseason and will be at every game in the future, no matter what. Right now being a Raiders fan is about loyalty.
Loyalty?
written by Rick4777, October 16, 2009
Well it looks like being a Raider fan is all about loyalty, because there is not anything else, when the team is 25-100 over the past six years, what is there to be excited for except blind loyalty?, I am not wasting a penny on this garbage, and if Davis keeps on loosing with his stubborn approach year in and year out, that is his problem, he will not last forever anyway, and hopefully there will come a day when this franchise goes back on top where it belongs with new and talented personnel running it starting from the very top.

Some of your comments are hilarious. I love my spiked punch drinking Raider fan friends. First of all any "boycott" is less about the money than making a visual point. Be a Raider fan, I'm not saying you should be anything else, but if somehow someway, nobody showed up for the game it would make a point. If you want to go drink and use the restrooms and watch one of the worst teams in the history of football, a team the that owner is systematically destroying, more power to you. Feel free to support the Al. He doesn't give a crap about you, and I'm not really sure he cares about the team either.

As for the Teabagger comment from Raider312, if you actually think about it, it's actually a pretty good analogy for the point Levi was trying to make. You might want to re-read the article. I don't care if you are right wing, or left wing, if you think Fox just reports the news and doesn't have an agenda you are truly an idiot. Even Fox admits it has an agenda. Levi's point is, he tries not to support specific agendas (hence he is not Fox and we the Raider fans are not Teabaggers he is trying to rally).
being loyal to who exacty?
written by KUSH, October 16, 2009
haha, wow. idiots in here like to talk about what loyalty really is.

you homers don't seem to get the purpose of boycotting. We are all Raider faithful forever. the Logo, the historical players, the rings, and the Lombardi trophies.. what is being boycotted is AL DAVIS. Yes, he was, for the most part, the reason for those rings and trophies.... 30 YEARS AGO. This man has single handedly brought down this team to it's lowest point and DOESNT WANT TO CHANGE A THING REGARDLESS. How is this being loyal to your diehard fans that are putting money in your pocket?

We've said it all before... the definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results... GUESS WHOS PICTURE IS BY THIS DEFINITION?

so, who exactly are you being loyal to except of course putting money into the Oakland community. Lets see here... if it's Al Davis, you know nothing about CURRENT FOOTBALL JUST AS HE DOESNT. GO BACK IN YOUR TIME MACHINE IDIOTS AND LIVE IN THE 70's.

I mean, they say "respect your elders" ... but if an older guy was to flip you off AFTER cutting you off on the freeway, you're most likely going to return the favor right? So how can you respect this man when he doesn't respect you, that's my philosophy in life. When he refuses to let an experienced GM and HC do whatever they want to re-build properly and return to respectability, it's just lunacy. No no, instead he drafts based off his GUT FEELING(scratch that, only 40 time speed), then refuses to take him(DHB) out of the starting lineup when he's stinking it up all over the place, just because of how much this player is getting paid. NAME ANOTHER OWNER THAT DOES THIS? you can't can you. because it's just plain idiotic.

Not to mention the players not caring. The last time this team had a direction and leadership was Gannon. And every player on the team wanted to knock him out for taking away the pool table balls. The only man standing between them was Tim Brown at the time. But, this did translate to wins and a SB visit... right?

Bottom line is, Al should realize all this. He should be thinking in his head "hey the last we went to the SB, I stepped back and let Bruce and John build this team for 3 years, WOW I NEED TO GET BACK TO THOSE DAYS" ... this doesn't mean bringing those 2 back as HC/GM ... but he should consider it.

If he were to sign a contract to hand over football operations to a HC/GM worth of even doing that to, and fix his front office.. then we will see the light shine once again.

MORE OF THIS SAME BULLSHIT YEAR IN AND YEAR OUT? We won't be a .500 team ever again.

you idiots can go root for Al Davis, i'm good. I am boycotting this joke of a "team"

Kush - Amen! Sound a bit angry... but you (we) should be. I wish the players and coaches were. Cable has to know he is gone, hopefully he will stand up to Al and play who he wants to. He plays Al's scholarship players and he's going to lose and get fired. He plays who he wants to and he'll probably get fired for "cause" but maybe he'll gain some player respect and win a couple making it a bit harder to actually fire him.
Protest
written by Roofrafa, October 17, 2009
Not only are fans going to protest the poor preformance of the Raiders but Animal activists will be there too!!(vick)feel sorry for t.v. networks loosing on all the ratings.lol.Bring Grudden back!!!bring back Grudden!!bring back grudden!!!!!!!
LMAO at RaiderDoc
written by KUSH, October 17, 2009
Yea Doc, well said. We don't need Cable anyway. I like what he did with the squad at the end of the season last year.. but this obviously didn't translate to now. I don't know wtf he(Al) are thinking. A guy with 0 coaching experience coming in and being the play caller as well. After the Wild Bass formation last season, I thought he was just going all in because of the expected short lived time at HC ... but now he has full HC/OC duties, and is blowing it bigtime in my opinion. I'm sure it's mostly Al's influence in his play calling, but damn man.. we had better play calling from Walsh/Shell and and Lame Kitten ... this is just bad.
How to fix the Raiders
written by Jack Winters, October 18, 2009
Fixing the Raiders would be easy once they get rid of the owner of the team, then fire the head coach, then fire #2, or in other words do it or die, or the rest of the games will be just like today's game against the Eagles.
Thanx for your attention.

Fire Al!
written by Dubby, October 25, 2009
Simply put, our Oakland Raiders cannot get any better than they currently are simply because Al Davis IS our General Manager! No matter what happens today or tomorrow, we've got a man who is clearly separated from reality making all of the wrong decisions as a GM (Huff, Gallery, JaMarcus, Darius, Walker, Hall, etc). If any other GM would have made the decisions that Al has made over the last 7 years, we'd have been through three by now, going on four. Not to mention it's a well known fact that any respectable coach would have to be out of their mind to think they could come here and think that they could really have the opportunity to coach the team how they really saw fit without unnecessary interferrence from Al. Until he can step up, be a man, and admit he's solely the one responsible for putting us in the possition we're currently in now.

how can people deny the right of a fan to boo an inferior product? Are we simply supposed to keep dishing out hundreds of hard-earned dollars for the same bull-shit year after year?

NEWS FLASH a team that plays a base defense and runs an obsolete offense will not will in professional sports. Why is it wrong for people to reject this horrible style of play, should we blindly clap along with the raiderettes and pretend like there is some magical turnaround?

I play on a semi professional football team and we run a more complicated defense than the raiders do,
