Nation must show or Raiders will go

Mark Davis has been more visible of late
(TFDS photo/ Patrick A. Patterson)

After selling out their home opener against the San Diego Chargers, the Raiders attendance has dropped off dramatically. In their third game, as they were coming off their first win and facing their division rival Denver Broncos the announced attendance was their worst since 2005. After beating the Eagles, the Raiders had the lowest home attendance since 1966. (Not counting a scab game in 1987.)

This dwindling attendance is sending a message to both the city of Oakland and the Raiders. The message that the fans allegedly want to send is that they want a competitive team, but the message that is being sent is that there is not overwhelming fan support. This message is not lost on the city of Oakland or Alameda county, both of which are needed if the Raiders are going to get that new stadium they covet. However, the message is coming through loud and clear to the Raiders that the fans aren't coming out, and each non-sellout pushes the Raiders closer to considering a third move.

With the fans not coming out, the Raiders are not making the gate money. They are already at an economic disadvantage by playing in a stadium with a minimum of luxury boxes. This is exacerbated by lack of sell-outs which further hurt not only the team's immediate financial situation, but the long term valuation of the franchise.

When Al Davis moved the Raiders to Oakland prior to the 1982 season, there was no issue regarding sellouts. The Raiders had a streak of home sell-outs that stretched over a decade long. The issue was the small capacity of the Coliseum and that it only held 54,000 people, as well as the lack of luxury boxes. The prospect of playing in a stadium with a capacity over 90,000, followed by a promised brand new state of the art stadium complete with luxury boxes was too much to pass up.

As it stands, the Coliseum as it was reconfigured in 1996 has a capacity of 62,000. It does have luxury suites in both the East Side and West Side clubs. However, the sales of the club seats have not lived up to expectations, nor has attendance.

Year Attendance Record
1995 423,376 8 – 8
1996 425,018 7 – 9
1997 375,499 4 – 12
1998 386,548 8 – 8
1999 497,041 8 – 8
2000 462,515 12 – 4
2001 472,091 10 – 6
2002 485,092 11 – 5
2003 440,063 4 – 12
2004 405,936 5 – 11
2005 418,450 4 – 12
2006 467,964 2 – 14
2007 472,876 4 – 12
2008 462,800 5 – 11
Yearly avg 442,519

The Raiders are on a pace for approximately 390,000 attendance. That would be the lowest home attendance figure since 1998 when the Raiders drew 386,000. It is also only 85% of the average annual attendance.

This is a pivotal time for the future of the Raiders in Oakland, and the message that is being sent is one that Oakland is not supporting the Raiders.

Developer Ed Roski has received the green light for building a new stadium in the City of Industry in the LA area. Since the Raiders have ties to that area having called it home from 1982-94, they are always one of the first teams mentioned when it comes to a team moving to LA. As it stands, the Raiders lease with the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum ends in 2010. That would basically make the Raiders a pending free agent and a very tempting target for the LA stadium.

The Raiders have also been exploring options for a much needed stadium in the East Bay. In 2007 Mark Davis approached the city of Dublin about using some surplus Camp Parks land for a new stadium and was rebuffed. There has also been talk of the Raiders and Niners sharing a stadium in the South Bay. More recently the Raiders have been working on a proposal to build a new stadium/retail area in the same area as the current Coliseum.

The clock is counting down towards the end of the lease, and the fans need to show the Raiders and Oakland that they want their team in Oakland.

How true this article is
written by P. Fitch, October 28, 2009
Just a couple of weeks ago some fans were talking about boycotting games and I told them if they like the Raiders in Oakland they better do the opposites and get in the seats. Of course I got ridiculed by some so called logical fans. They can complain about how bad the Oakland Raiders are and so on, not show up for the games, but how are they going to feel when the team moves back to LA in 2011 because of low revenue? Logic tells me the Raiders already have one foot out the door.

Like this article states, they already play in a old tiny stadium, and when it's half full why should they stay? Yeah the Raiders suck, but the fact remains they are still one of the highest paid football teams in the NFL and with a half filled stadiums that spells disaster for the Oakland Raiders.

And I am willing to bet as soon as they leave they will be an AFC power house and the Oakland Raiders will just be a faded memory. Oakland or LA I am still a Raiders fan, but I am willing to bet the logical fans won't be.

Real fans support their team regardless of the win loss record, hat off to the fans that show up for every home game, sorry the other so called fans are ruining it for you.

Like I said a couple of weeks ago, the Oakland Raiders are in a very fragile state right now, but not necessarily the LA Raiders.

I've been a RAIDER fan for over 40 years, and nut'n will ever change that. But when AD movethe team to LA (stands for losing attitude) he ruined our mystique. We lost our identity. He put under foot what he had worked so hard to build, for what? Personal pride? A few extra bucks? I don't hate AD, I hate what he has done to our RAIDERS. In years past the road to the SB usually meant having to go through the S&B. Now they just laugh at us and stream roll past us. I now live in Michigan, but I proudly wear my RAIDER gear, but it sags a bit as of late.
Show or go?

I think you are way off on this. There is no mystery as to why fans are staying away. They are tired of Davis and his antics. We have been through 6 years of inept play, and personnel decisions. We have 3 good years of winning with Gruden then Davis gets rid of him and we have spiralled down. Davis is living in the past and won't let go. As far as the Raiders leaving, you don't know what Davis will do when given the chance. He has never really committed to staying in Oakland. I for one will not give him anymore of my money.

It doesnt matter where they move ALL Raider fans are sick and tired of the loosing and your right Dee the decisions made by Davis have ruined the team! Again if the fans are sick of the Raiders years of loosing what difference does it make where they move to,,,,their still loosers!!
Why buy bad product
written by Frankiedafish, October 28, 2009
The threat of losing our team to LA or another city is bad. Are we supposed to be scared into wasting what little money we have on watching the crap the Raiders put on the field? If you bought a Toyota and it broke down every day would you return to the same dealer and buy another car? You can't spend money on a product that is no good especially when you can not even justify, much less support the strange decisions made by Al Davis. Players come and go, coaches come and go, over the past 7 years two things remain constant Al Davis and losing. Until accountability returns to the Raiders and Davis accepts his role as the architect of this losing I doubt attendance will improve.
Don't eat the sandwich
written by mlow121, October 28, 2009
Let's say I walk into my favorite eatery on a Monday. I order my favorite meal along with my favorite drink. 45 minutes later and with no apology, the wait staff brings me a steaming crap sandwich along with a glass of warm urine. I want to say something. But, it's my favorite place. Maybe they're having an off day. Hey, everyone misses now and then. So as a loyal customer, I swallow down my crap and urine, thinking next time, I'll get my favorite meal as I remember it before, savory and delicious.
I walk in on Tuesday ... another crap sandwich. Wednesday ... crap. Thursday ... crap. Friday.... you get the idea. So Saturday rolls around, and I ask to speak to the owner I've known for years. Let's say his name is Al. "Hey Al," I say, "you've been serving me crap all week. What's the deal?" Al pulls out an overhead projector and proceeds to tell me that this is the crap he's serving, and it's the only way he's going to serve it.

At this point, I have two choices. Stay and continue to eat crap. Or find a new favorite place that cares and values my business. As much as I love to eat crap, sometimes you have to move on.

Going away from this high brow parable, while I've been a Raider fan for 29 years, I've reached a breaking point. Al Davis is no longer relevant in modern football, and he now runs the worst franchise in all of sports. Yes you cannot write the history of the NFL without him. But here's the facts. His team has not won a championship since 1983. He has not been a legitimate evaluator of NFL talent since the early '80's. And the loyalty that this article asks for is not returned by Al. Remember when he blew out of town before? He's going to do it again.

The common theme in these replies is that people will not continue to pay in order to see a sub-par product. With the moves that have been made over the last 7 years now, it becomes more apparent that Davis is content to sink the ship doing things his way, rather than have it sail using someone else's methods. Raider fans have been faithful year in and year out, and it is clear to us that Davis does not return that sentiment. Who's to say that he is'nt DELIBERATELY tanking the team, in order to make a move back to LA easier?
enough is enough
written by titanstrides, October 28, 2009
have to agree with the majority here. the only leverage the fans have against davis is their ability to NOT show up to the games and make him lose even more money (in addition to the millions he has already thrown away on bone headed draft picks). people are fed up and its nice to see that they are finally saying "enough is enough" by staying away from the games! the exclamation point on the statement was the lowest turnout in raiders history only one week after a convincing win over a decent philly team. no one is buying into this crap anymore. one win does not a winner make, and finally people are realizing that davis is the root of most of the raiders problems.
Way off
written by EmbarrassedRaiderFan, October 28, 2009
Sorry but this article is a ridiculous dribble, something that the Raiders Office might release. Your suggestion that we continue to pay for bad decisions, bad draft choices, bad games and an entry level coaching staff under the threat that the team might move is laughable. If memory serves genius Al Davis left Oakland for LA a number of years ago after selling out every game year after year. Attendance was not a factor then and will not be now. The only thing that might prevent him from moving the team again is the terrible product on the field. I am not sure any city wants to invest millions of dollars to land a team and end up with the laughing stock team of the NFL.

Patrick appreciate that you now get your blog posts approved by the Raiders PR Staff (err...John Herrera) but really? Threatening the Raider Nation to go sit and watch this crap of a team or else?? Else what? They move and guess what - we could see all the games on TV because we wouldn't be subject to the Black Out rule - I think that is a win-win.
I was born in Oakland and live there now and grew up idolizing the Raiders and the expectation of “Pride and Poise”. Took my 8 year old son to his first game last week, within 15 minutes the game was over – he along with everyone else was laughing (to keep from crying) at “JaBustus”, and as we were leaving he told me he didn’t want to be a Raiders fan because they “sucked”. I know we won’t be going to any more games or quite honestly investing any more time, passion, and effort into this team into they take it seriously:
-Hire an independent and reputable GM that has real decision making authority
-Hire a real coach – not the reject who couldn’t win games at Idaho
-Demand accountability from the players and staff
If moving helps them get there – than all the power to them – we will be able to see them on TV. Until then – don’t count me in your slavish devotion to the very worst, and I do mean the very worst organization in all of professional sports.

Big decisions by Al have really not been good. He does not have to be so desparate but the decisions are that way. LA attenance all said and done was 54,000 per game, the same as when he had the longest stretch of sellouts in the NFL through 1981.
He came back because of money and image decline and now he will leave because of money.
At 35000 a game its worth over 25,000,000 to the raiders. They are letting people go right now in the organization because of sales.
the lease is up next year and we have heard nothing
THEY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING......THEY WANT TO MOVE!

Nice try....Trying to blame the Raiders move to LA on the fans.....WTF is wrong with you!? Al Davis has no care for you or the Oakland fans....He has proved it and now is proving it more...The last 6 now 7 seasons full of bad decisions and poor drafts have left the fans without cause to come to the coliseum. The fan experance is lacking compaired to any stadium is the league. The only thing the Raider Nation cares about is winning and thats not going to happen....NOPE...No GM...NO good coaches.....NOT until the Raiders relocate to the LA market will change come. Thats what is going to happen no matter what. We never had control and we never will have any control of this team....It goes where the MONEY is and it AINT here...Its in LA.... I SAY FUCK YOU AL DAVIS AND ALL WHO CONSPIRE TO TAKE THIS TEAM....THE "OAKLAND" RAIDERS AWAY FROM HERE! FUCK HIM AND FUCK THEM...I WILL ALWAYS BE A FAN OF THE TEAM BUT I WILL NOT SPEND A CENT ON THIS LOST ORGANIZATION...NO MORE TICKETS NO SHIRTS OR HATS..NOTHING. YOU HAVE NO CLUE IF YOU THINK ITS EASY TO SPEND 1500 TO 3500 DOLLARS TO SEE THIS CRAP YEAR IN AND YEAR OUT....NO MORE FOR ME...LET SOME DUMB ASS THAT HAS MONEY TO BURN SPEND IT ON THIS CRAP....THEY KNOW...THERE NOT STUPID.....THEY WANT US NOT TO COME...SO....I WON'T...FUCK THEM....I CAN WATCH THE GAME FROM HOME EVEN IF ITS BLACKED OUT IN L.A......ITS A SHAME THE ORGANIZATION IS SO FUCKIN GREEDY AND SLIMEY...LIRES AND CREEPS...RUN THIS SHIP...NO PRIDE AND POISE IS LEFT IN ALAMEDA....JUST BULLSHIT!smilies/sad.gifsmilies/sad.gif
Bottom Line
written by AT, October 28, 2009
Rob, the bottom line is that 3 play-off appearances in the last 19 years (or 6 play-off apppearances in the last 24 years) has not grown a fan base. Most of the Raiders fans that remain are us old fools who can't change teams for psicological reasons and younger fans that for some reason like the Raiders. There are simply no new generations of fans for the Raiders!
Put a Winner On the Field
written by oc, October 28, 2009
I am a former season ticket holder. I won't go to another game until the Raiders are .500. I am tired of sitting in the Coliseum and watching all the drunks get rowdy in the stands cussing and booing their own team as we get blown out week after week. As fans, we are bitter. I don't really want to be surround myself with other bitter people so we can be angry and bitter together. I can think of a lot of more worthwhile things to do on a Sunday. As for WHY we are all bitter? The best the Raiders have been in the last 20 years was with Gannon and Gruden, and the organization has turned their backs on the only people that gave them a taste of success in the last two decades. You'll never win with that philosophy and I won't support a team that doesn't do what it takes to win. So move the team, do what you need to do. . . I'll still be a fan. I starting watching the Raiders play as a kid when they were in L.A. . . but I lived in the Bay Area. . . its not like I was sitting in the stadium then either. Does not mean I'm not a fan? Give me a break. At least I'll be able to see them tank games on T.V. instead of the radio.
L.A. Developer wants a piece of the team
written by MadDawg, October 28, 2009
Whichever team that relocates to the ne LA stadium will have to allow ownership interest in the team. The only current team that would fit the perfect scenario is the Rams.
1. They are for sale
2. They are in the NFC West, which would benefit the league in maintaining regional/divison alignment.
3. L.A. still has a Rams fan base and it would be politically more acceptable since it would not involve poaching another CA team, which Gov. Arnie would find acceptable.
Seriously????

Apparently my $60 is more valuable to Al Davis than the guaranteed $23M for the 4 catches DHB has this year? Is my $60 ticket more valuable than the $7M for Javon Walker to warm the bench? Is my $60 more important than the $60M dished out to our fat, out of shape, gutless swine we have at QB who is blaming the problem on everyone but himself? Get real man. Here's a suggestion: stop wasting cash on worthless unproven players hoping that they turn out to be STARS and everyone says "Wow, how did you know before anyone else?! You must have known since you gave them all that loot!" Reality check: AL DAVIS HAS NOT MADE ANY STAR PLAYERS SIMPLY BY PAYING BIG MONEY. Stop wasting the money there and get more players with more heart than Cash like MURPHY! Then there wont be any reason to try and make us fans take the blame for a move. Bull. smilies/cool.gif

Al, I really hope you pass soon. I will love you when you are gone. Right now I am tired of nursing your carcass with my hard earned money. If this is all the Raiders will ever be end it. Kill the franchise and let us grieve and move on. I am tired of being chained to this fading thankless, bitter, cancerous lesion that was once my favorite thing in life. Al Davis you suck. No one who cares about long term profitability and winning will have you unless you give up some control. You are trying to win one more to prove you are what we remember you to have been. Sorry it ain't gonna' happen. You have thoroughly screwed this team up. I said before that there is a stinking pile of rotten swagger in the basement. You havent learned, you haven't made any attempt to truly invest in winning and now the whole house reaks of your rotting stench. I hate you Davis. You are a loathesome dissapointment pretending to be a man. My father raised me to recognize that unsused potentail and disappointment are truly crimes against your society. You are a disappointment and you have put the potential of this franchise out to rot rather than let some of ability use it for good. I hate you Mr Davis for destroying something I held dear for 40 years. I am an owner I invested my time and so much more. You are as hateful and selfish and stupid a human being as I have ever witnessed. Please add the Raiders to the following list.

Ive been a die hard raider fanatic for over 20 years now. ive saved every thing raider that I have ever bought from old trading cards down to a pair of raider underwear. Im sure im not alone when i say that i think about the raiders damn near every day even in the off season !
Well after the eagles game I still had a small glimmer of hope left that the raiders would maybe be able to salvage there season and was even looking forward to watching them play the jets because they were falling and if the raiders could play them like they did the eagles.....then they for surely could beat the jets.
Well after the first quarter of the game when we were down 14-0 something died in the raiders, I seen it as every other member of the raider nation did. It was their passion to play for victory! After that it was like watching a bunch of robots out there, a whole team of of lifeless cowards just going through the motions. where is their pride ? where is their dignity? Why has the last 6 -7 years been an absolute fucking joke? I will tell you! The players on the fields attitude reflects the leadership skills of Al Davis. His passion for his team to win is still there. But his passion for his ego has killed this franchise . His players dont respect their coaches there for they dont respect him. but they do love him.......for his wallet.
Until we get an owner that hires actual coaches that are allowed to put the fear of god in these fucking cowards we have on this so called team we will never enjoy another winning season.
So my passion to support this team until that happens is dead! sorry, raider nation im out!

I've been an east coast raiders fan since my 5th birthday when i chose a team for myself, (other than the team - the dolphins that my dad tried to make me a fan of) and I have not seen many winning seasons, during the 2002 super bowl run i was in a military hospital with a broken back and i watched what i thought would be the worst game i would ever watch (the bowl vs the bucs)

Last Sunday proved me wrong, I threw out my jersey on my lonely walk home after being laughed out of the bar I was watching the game at. The Raiders showed absolutely no fight what-so-ever, no more will I waste money on a team that doesn't care, and FUCK OFF to anyone who says that I am wrong for not supporting my team. I have supported them and carried them in my hearts every day of my life, but honestly what are they showing to get better. I flew to the giants game and watched them lay down, I just gave away tickets to the steelers game (to steeler fans) FREE because i would rather WORK than go cheer for the team I love, because I know there isn't a chance we will be a winning team until al davis no longer has control over this team. Being an east coast fan I don't care if they move to LA, I don't care where they play, I care HOW they play, so don't threaten me with support OR ELSE they will go away

Thanks LOL. However, I sincerely hope that the people in LA do not go for the surety of a short term profit in the local malls on merch; the gaurantee of sponsorship on local radio station shows; and a tired promise of winning ways and sold out shows that never materialized while I lived there.

Unless they play hard ball and accept only a deal that ensures a restructuring for success (like a bankruptcy or hostile take over), they will only have succeeded in allowing Davis to screw a different set of fans. Unfortunately LA is Known for the superficial superstars that grew out of the Hollywood mystique and lifestyle. No way is everyone in LA like that but there is a large contingent of the posers with cash that would consider themselves shrewd bussiness people. I grew up there I have seen them. If that is the sort that Davis cons into accepting his terms, everyone in SoCal is screwed. The real business people in LA would not let him in because they know the value of a quality product is customer loyalty. This is the sorriest situation yet. Poor nation and all the poorer for Al Dementia-avis.

The Raiders threatening to leave Oakland is like a cheating spouse threatening to leave the marriage. Just exactly why am I supposed to be upset? Jeeze, we've given, money, heart, and soul for years to the Oakland Raiders. In return, the Raiders gave us PSL's, pushed aside Gruden, drafted Jamarcus Russel and DHB, and have had more coaches than President Clinton has had interns. I'll be at the Chiefs game but, it will be mostly out of routine and respect for the past. The Raiders offer no other logical reason to support the team.
Raiders of the Lost Season (Part VII)
written by Wiltol, October 29, 2009
The Raiders are like a bad horror flick that keeps getting worse with each sequel. Thanks to bad decisions by Al Davis and draft busts such as JR, DHB and DM we are in our 7th season of futility since SB XXXVII.

More fans filling the Coliseum and wasting their money will not make Russell any smarter or thinner, DHB grow another set of hands, the defense stop an old lady running with the ball, and Al Davis any less crazy. In my 30+ years bleeding Silver and Black, I could never imagine a proud franchise become the laughing stock of professional sports. We were, once upon a time, one of the winning-est franchises in professional sports. Al Davis made what the Raiders were, but he also made them what they are now.

Moving them to the ends of the universe won't make them win any more games. A new stadium would just mean a fancier place for the other team to bury them into the turf and eat overpriced hotdogs on the sidelines. Move them them to LA. Call them the Los Angeles Raiders of Oakland, Irwindale, City of Industry, etc. There's one name they haven't shook, and it doesn't look like they will anytime soon: the worst team in the NFL six (now seven) years running. Even the Lions have won more games in the same span and they went 0-16 last season! I don't care how or where you win- just that you do so more than two, three or four times a year. The Coliseum will then be filled again. What a novel idea: win. Winning is the only thing that will fix any of this. The Raider Nation deserves and expects more not less.

This includes all the players, front office personel, and coaches, they all suck. I've been tell ing all you fead up fans to take your Raider gear and drop it off at the team headquarters. Harbor Bay Parkway Alameda. I drove from Reno, Nv and left all my shit on Al's front door. I left my Morrison jersey with a note to him that said he plays football like a bitch. Morrison is one of the Raiders best players, what dose this say about the rest of these sackless bitches? I'm sick and tired of this team(so called) I'm done.
