Oakland Raiders turn in abysmal performance against Saints

New Orleans Saints v Oakland Raiders

Normally, a preseason loss ranks right up there in importance with an I Love Lucy rerun on Nick at Night. However, a number of factors combine to have this game screaming "There is a problem." If it was the third and fourth teams completely dominated, that would merit a quick yawn and the justification that those guys will be auditioning for the UFL in a matter of months. However, it was the first team doing the Washington Generals impersonation. Frankly, there is not enough negative superlatives in the Oxford English Dictionary to adequately describe just how dismal the Raiders putrid play really was.

This game serves as the canary in the coal mine because it is the all important third preseason game. This is the one game where the Raiders were supposed to have a game plan to go against the Saints, and simulate a regular season game. (oops!)

The Raiders starting defense supposedly took the field after the Saints returned the opening kickoff. However, eleven guys picked up at Home Depot on the way to the stadium. Drew Brees effectively sliced and diced the Raiders defense as he led the Saints on three touchdown drives in three attempts. Admittedly, he did get an assist on his final touchdown drive by two bonehead pass interference calls on Stanford "I lasted longer than the guy selected in front of me at the same position" Routt.

Nnamdi Asomugha provided the defensive highlight (There's a surprise) when he blasted a Saints receiver to break up a rare pass thrown in Aso's direction. Newcomer Michael Hawkins provided a second defensive highlight when he laid a good hit on a receiver to make a tackle for a minimal gain.

The Saints pulled Brees and many of their offensive starters with ten minutes left in the SECOND QUARTER. Had they stayed in, there is no telling how many negative defensive records the Raiders would have set. According to figures worked out by one of my colleagues, the Saints were on pace to score 60+ points, and gain over 800 yards rushing. There is no excuse for play like that.

The Raiders play against the run has been nothing short of terrible during this recent run of futility. However, the Raiders have steadfastly refused to invest in defensive linemen who can stop the run. The Raiders acquisition of Derrick Burgess in 2005 brought in a pass rusher. Tommy Kelly was rewarded with a rich contract because he was supposed to be able to rush the passer. Gerard Warren is a pass rushing defensive tackle. Trevor Scott is at best a situational pass rusher, but he looks to be starting at defensive end.

The Raiders had a chance to get a potential monster against the run in both the first and second rounds of the draft. Instead they drafted a speedy wide receiver, and yet another defensive back. Wasn't the combined year and a half in Oakland of DeAngelo Hall and Gibril Wilson enough to show that stocking up on defensive backs does not win games.

For the past two years, all through the offseason the I have issued a consistent clarion cry of "ADDRESS THE DEFENSIVE LINE." The Raiders haven't done that, and yet again their defense is on its way to being a sieve once again.

I recently predicted the Raiders would win at least seven games. After that defensive performance 2006 may be freed from its purgatory of worst Raider season ever, and the Raiders will have the top pick so they can get Syd'Quan Thompson as long as he runs a 4.3 40 at the combine. They will once again ignore the glaring problems along the defensive line, and the process will repeat ad nauseum.

On the other side of the ball, the young physical specimens the Raiders have brought in can't hold on to the ball. Darren McFadden who was selected ahead of a promising defensive tackle fumbled the ball and set the Saints up for one of their multitude of touchdowns. Fourth round pick Louis Murphy had two drops and a fumble. Brandon Myers had another drop. Johnnie Lee Higgins dropped a perfectly thrown ball. JaMarcus Russell fumbled on a strip sack. Nick Miller couldn't find the handle on a ball. It was like the entire offense coated their hands with Crisco before they took the field.

Cornell Green should not have been handed the starting right tackle job for the Raiders. Three preseason games, and he has been called for at least one penalty in each of the games. I believe that he has five in three games. This is not new for Green, his inability to not get flagged or the quarterback abused flew under the radar because Kwame "human turnstile" Harris was on the other side. In addition to his penalties, it was his man that forced the strip sack.

Go ahead, tell yourself it's only preseason and doesn't mean anything. The game was so bad that the NFL Network dropped their live telecast in the second quarter to show a repeat of an NFL Films presentation Football Follies. Go ahead and take the justification that the 2006 Raiders went 4-1 in the preseason before imploding to a two win season. However, those preseason wins all had the Raider Nation wondering how the team won those games. There were warning signs. This is a huge flashing warning sign.

Two weeks from Monday, the San Diego Chargers will be coming into the Coliseum. LaDainain Tomlinson, who has been a Raider-Killer throughout his career has to be licking his chops after seeing a whose who of who's that? running all over the Raiders. If the play of the Raiders on that night bears any resemblance to what took place against the Saints, Tomlinson will break Adrian Peterson's single game record.

Patrick - It kills me to say it (or think it), but you hit the nail on the head. Every bit of anger you spewed out is deserved. That was abysmal. Disgusting even. I've seen several "predictions" of us going 3-13 and said to myself "I know we aren't winning the superbowl this year, but whomever is saying that is way off." Sadly, it looks like I am the one way off. 3-13 might be generous if this is all we got.

To me the lone good points were Bryant playing way above what was expected of him and (sadly) Garcia coming in and hyping up the offense a bit. I say sadly because I don't want Garcia to be the leader. I want Russell coming in and telling the guys to pick their game up. I want him to get in the huddle and light a fire! It's time to lead Russell... STEP UP!

I'm not even sure how it is possible to be so bad. Think I am going to go bury my head in the sand, drink some more of the koolaid, and go with the "it's only preseason" and "it's just a bad coincidence that everyone was fumbling and missing tackles on the same day." I don't know what else to do... I guess just hope against hope, against history, against everything I know and have seen for 6 years, that this loss is the one that sparks someone to step up and take charge to turn this team around.

Can't say I'd ever been down after a pre-season game... I guess there is a first time for everything.

Doc,

Don't blame JaMarcus. His only really bad play was the strip-sack courtesy of Cornell Green. He was hitting receivers right where he should be only to see the ball get dropped.

I just didn't feel up to putting any positives in that article.

Patrick, I agree, short of the fumble, Russell wasn't bad. Not great, but not bad at all. That said, he's the quarterback, it's his job to rally the troops and get people pumped up. Maybe it's getting in someones face, maybe it's slapping them on the back and saying "forget it, I'm coming back at you, let's nail it next time" but somethings got to give. The announcer saying Garcia went in and pumped them up a bit was the 3rd time I've heard something like that. I think the first was during the 49ers practice when they were dominating our offense saying "we can't compete."

The good news is it is preseason. The bad news MNF is coming fast.

Exposed is the word you're looking for Pat. Years of ignoring glaring needs on your roster for sub 4.4 guys exposed right there. Lets be brutally honest, the Saints would beat the Raiders 100 times out of 100. No question. They have a potent passing game while ours is 'developing'. They have a Defense that can keep them in the game while ours is porous. I'm glad we dont play them again this year as the result would be EXACTLY the same.

Where do you go from here? I'd cut Routt and Green for starters then address the real problem: the D-Line. Kelly is too expensive for a back-up so I'd cut him. 1 tackle 2 assists in 3 games. Sorry, he wasn't double teamed every single play. Scott would appear on obvious passing downs but I think he has potential. I'd start Ellis, Richardson, Joseph and Bryant on Thursday. See who wants a job. Work in Cohen and Boschetti at DT to see what they can do. I'd look at every single End and Tackle discarded from now on. Our D-line doesn't need major surgery- it needs a transplant. Brown (who's done OK) moves back to SAM and welcome back Kirk. Best of a bad job really.

Thanks to you Doc for the company last night. When your team is getting blasted like that I felt I was the only Raiders fan this side of the pond.

No problem DevonRaiderUK. Sorry any of us had to watch that. Can't believe I woke up to watch the game... but I was excited to see what the first unit could do. Time would have been better spent sleeping so I would be rested for work tonight. But I'm a glutten for punishment I guess.

The cuts will be interesting. Who do we keep at RB, Russell or Rankin? Sands is clearly gone, but what about Kelly? Why did we give him such an insane contract in the first place??? Who's the number 3 QB? I'd almost consider cutting Garcia. Not because he is bad (he's probably our best QB) but because you CAN'T use him. You have to try and stick with Russell and Garcia won't be around many more years. At least if Russell proves to be a bust we can be developing people. Could Garcia pull a Gannon and be a stud for us playing anti-Raider ball, maybe, but does the old man in the booth let that happen... I don't think so.

Agree with you on the Garcia front Doc. No point in leaning on him should Russell flunk, he's not the future and wouldn't be the present for long. I like Frye myself, he's young enough and has had a good camp, just a guess on that front tho'. If the D can keep the game close I'm starting to believe in JR. He's done nowt wrong, we just need to up the performance of the supporting cast.

Out of the RB's I'd keep Rankin trade/release Fargas release Russell (although we have so much talent there it's criminal, Cable just has to stick to his game plan and use them). That's the cue for SpokeaneOakfan to tell me otherwise! They wont cut Kelly they've paid too much for him but we need to find a solution there. My money is on either Bryant or Joseph who'll partner Kelly. We need to find out and soon. I would be sorely tempted to trade Lechler to address the situation after watching Schmitts efforts. Trade Lechler to the Pats and bring in Ron Brace. His early reports are good. I know it's never gonna happen but it's nice to be an armchair owner.

Been good talking to you Doc, let's hope we're a bit more upbeat after Thursday.

Trade away this whole damn team, Cut the rest. Play the season with FAs. I think we would have the same record 1-15. All these players have no heart.
Al Davis
written by rodmoney, August 30, 2009
Gentlemen,
It all starts and ends with Al Davis. As long as he is in office we will remain a team with flashy fast players that can't stop the run. There are not DT's that run a 4.2 forty so don't expect Al to be ever drafting one in the 1st rd next yr. Not gonna happen. He will continue to stockpile cb's, wr's and rb's while the run D ranks 32nd yr after yr. Don't blame Cable for he is a puppet and can only coach what Al drafts which isn't much when you have rb's fumbling and wr's catching a ball every other game. We could have a talented team if only Al's fascination with world class speed didn't interfere with reason.

Ya'll are not that bad, We just capitalized on ya'll mistakes that didn't happen in ya'll first 2 games. You cannot turn the ball over to our offense because Drew is gonna make you pay. Our D is better, Add that with an offensive machine and it equals 45-7. The Texans was questioning how good they were after we beat them 38-10. We've been putting up numbers like this, But because we have a D now the points just come a whole lot quicker as you can see by that 31-0 score at halftime !!!!
The Big Bad Saints

Patrick, where would you put the Saints in terms of Superbowl contenders? I put them right up there with the Patriots, Steelers, Eagles, Colts, and Yes the Chargers. These are all teams that on any given day can explode on you and I don't think anyone expects the Raiders to be at this playing level with a starting offense thats key position players are at the most 3 years removed from college. I know the D sucked and everyone believes that the Raiders didn't address this situation properly in the offseason and that people are going to run on us all day again and again. I believe they can pull it up in the teens but high teens non the less is not going to get us a championship. Morrison is better then people give him credit for and was missed, hey maybe he is the leader we need on that D? The Saints were a good challenge for us to know that we still have a lot of work to do to be Superbowl contenders but that doesn't mean we still can't have a winning season either. The key is how they bounce back when they play the Chargers at home but more importantly those first three games.

Thanks 4 the pep talk Davey but after the regular season beating in the Superdome last season all we wanted to see was some sort of progression. Now all I can see is that the gap between the two times appears to be widening.

BlackSunday - Can't speak for everyone, but for me, it's less that we got beat by the Saints (didn't expect to win plus who cares its pre-season) but it is the fact that we looked pathetic in all phases of the game. One stop, one great or even good drive, something and I'd feel a bit better... throw us a bone. The highlight was probably the first two passes from JR, then it was all downhill.

Davey - Thanks for stopping by, but while you guys are contenders, you made us look like a Jr. College team.

RodMoney - Does the idiot Al not see what's happening. That has long been my question. I just don't get it. From genus to clueless. It is true that the man has forgotten more about football then I will ever know, but it is becoming increasingly clear that the amount he has forgotten has left him with nothing. It's a shame what he is doing to his legacy. I hope he goes out on top, but it's not looking likely. I love the flash players as much as the next guy, but show me a great team that doesn't have greatness in the trenches. Even the great Raider teams of the past were anchored by all pros and hall of famers.

Al davis was playin?
written by NvRaiderFan, August 31, 2009
I did not see Al take the field, must of missed it. I did see a probowl CB play soft and always out of position except one play. I did see a front 7 that was lost and playin like it was to hot for thier punk a#$$. As far as the other DB's were concerned I only saw them when a Saints WR was running by them. I never saw Al playin, dammit, I must of missed it.
