Week two Oakland Raiders ballers and busters: Thoughts from a reader's side
Once again, that feisty contributor that everyone either loves to hate or hates to love, L Dizzle contributes his thoughts on the game with the Kansas City Chiefs. He breaks down his list of ballers and busters for week 2.
Raiders Week 2: Ballers and Busters
By: L Dizzle
While it was hard to tell whether the Raiders were better or the Chiefs were simply worse, the Raiders did play as they should have. As the analyists like to say "They beat the team they were supposed to beat". And the experts are just going to say that this win was because the Chiefs are bad as opposed to giving the Raiders any credit but the important thing is that the Raiders didn't lose. Nothing else really matters at this point. This means there is still hope to live another day. If the Raiders had lost, it would be catastrophic. The Chiefs had a terrible team before they put in the previously released, 7th round pick out of Coastal Carolina at quarterback playing in his first NFL game. Quite frankly, I was disappointed that the Raiders gave up a TD and a 2 point conversion at the end of the game. Well now that we have set the scene, here are this weeks Ballers and Buster:
Ballers:
Thomas Howard- He was all over the place on every play. He was the Kansas City Visa: "Everywhere you want to be". He started out the game with great coverage on a long pass to RB Jamaal Charles that if the ball weren't so under thrown, he could have intercepted it. Then the next time you saw him he was in the KC backfield stopping LJ for a loss. Two plays later he timed the snap and burst through the line to get a sack. Just before the half he swatted the ball out of LJ's hands, causing him to fumble. In the 2nd half, it was more of the same from Howard. He swatted the ball away from a receiver, combined on a sack for a 10 yd loss, and drilled the KC RB on a short dump off pass for no gain.
Gerrard Warren- He played the way everyone expected him to play against Denver. He was pushing the KC olinemen into their own backfield all day and collapsing the running lanes they were trying to open up. Early in the game he put pressure on the QB and deflected his pass at the line. Later he combined to tackle LJ for a loss. Then tackled LJ again for no gain. Just before the half he was in the backfield for another QB pressure and combined to tackle LJ again for no gain. In the 2nd half, the Raiders played Terdell Sands a bit more to keep Warren from getting worn out but when he was in, he still kept the holes filled and made life miserable for the Chiefs Oline. Which was evident by the fact he still combined on two sacks and a tackle at the line.
The Entire Oline- Bravo fellas. The Oline was pushing the Chiefs Dline around all day. Opening up huge holes for Fargas and McFadden to run through. They seemed a little rusty to start the game in pass protection but gave up no sacks. This was despite Mario Henderson starting (he did an admirable job). The interior lineman were especially good. Gallery and Grove were manhandling the Chiefs Dts. McFadden's big 51 yd run came right through a Gallery block (along with a great block by Miller) and quite a few other good runs went right through Cooper Carlisle's blocks. Cornell Green didn't give up any whiffs or have any bonehead plays either. Great work guys.
Kirk Morrison- You didn't see him much in the first half. He quietly held down the middle of the field discouraging passes near him and tackling anyone who made it past the line. He seemed to have earned his keep in the first half and was set loose in the second half to wreak havoc on the Chiefs. On the Chiefs 2nd drive of the second half, he nearly single handedly made them go three and out. He sacked the QB and forced a fumble (luckily for the Chiefs, it went out of bounds) and then two plays later he tackled the RB for a minimal gain forcing the Chiefs to punt. He defended a pass in the end zone just before the Chiefs finally scored their first TD of the day. Then after Michael Bush fumbled the ball away to give the Chiefs another shot at the end zone which could have tied the game up, he had the game sealing interception.
Sebastian Janikowski- He set a new career high and a Raider record 56 yard field goal as well as nailing two other no-doubt field goals and kicking a touchback on all but one of his kickoffs.
Honorable Mention:
Lane Kiffin- Last week I asked Lane a few questions. First was: Why, when you have the ball on the Chiefs 38 yard line, would you punt instead of either go for it or try for a field goal? Well this week the Raiders were oddly enough, right on the 38 yard line again. And he sent Seabass out there to nail a field goal. Thanks for listening Lane. The next question was: Why did we not see Michael Bush especially in short yardage situations? Well we saw quite a bit of Bush in this game (there is a great joke there that I know all of you dirty little monkeys are thinking right now). Granted it was mainly because Fargas went out with a groin injury (God help us) but none the less Bush was out there to be had and we got some. You might even say we got lucky. Even though he had a maddeningly untimely fumble, he ended the game with a nice 32 yd romp into the end zone. See what happens when you listen to me Kiff? Good things.
Darren McFadden- He would be near the top of the Ballers except for the fact that he tainted his great runs by fumbling TWICE. One of those fumbles was a lost fumble when the Raiders were in scoring position and the other one luckily went out of bounds. His game was like his college career: Lots of yards and fumbles. His runs were fantastic and very few RB would have taken that 19 yarder around the outside and scored the way he did. But I give equal credit for his long runs to the Oline. They were opening up holes for Fargas the entire first half before McFadden took over and they opened up holes for Michael Bush after that. Dmac makes honorable mention because we could not have won this game without him. He needs to work on the fumbling problem or we will no doubt lose some games because of him too.
Rob Ryan- Last week everyone was wondering where the fierceness had gone from his schemes. There was no blitzing and he had the corners and safeties playing so far off in zone that the Broncos had a good 15 yards off the line to drop short passes to their receivers all day. This week, much like Kiffin, he listened. We saw a guy blitzing on nearly every play. Whether it be Gibril Wilson, Thomas Howard, or Kirk Morrison. He also had DeAngelo Hall playing a lot more man coverage and Huff was flying around like I have never seen him before. Nice adjustment. Now let's see if you can duplicate it against a team that is not completely inept on offense.
Busters:
JaMarcus Russell- 6 completions for 55 yards (only one was a drop by the receiver). Not much more needs to be said for him to make this list. But I will go further anyway. He looked terrible. His first trip to the redzone he evaded pressure and stepped up in the pocket as he should but then he had a wide open Ronald Curry staring at him on a crossing pattern and passed him up to pass to Lelie in coverage which of course was incomplete. He was way off target with nearly every throw he made. Usually he was behind the receiver which is a recipe for an INT. But he was also throwing ahead of them and over their heads. He didn't even run well. The most intelligent play he had all day was when he threw the ball away instead of taking a sack. I shudder to think what he will look like next week against the Bills who actually HAVE a defense.
Ronald Curry- He didn't have a single catch all day. Which usually means that he couldn't get open most of the time. A veteran like him should be getting open much more often. He was thrown to twice. One was a bad pass that was thrown way ahead of him but the other was put right in his hands and he couldn't handle it. He dropped a couple of passes last week too. I think that makes 1 pass caught in two games. Not what we expected from the guy who is supposed to be the Raiders most reliable receiver. Oddly enough Lelie is looking much more reliable.
Wrap up:
It is nice to see that the tables are turned in the two categories between this week and last week. There were only two Ballers last week and only two Busters this week. As I said before, it is hard to tell whether the Raiders good play was more about the Chiefs being so bad but the Raiders did score more points on them than the Patriots did last week and also gave up fewer points so that is saying something. It should also be more clear to Ryan how the defense functions best. Attack, attack, attack! The tables are also turned between the offense and defense. Yet again, that could be more a product of how bad the Broncos defense is as evidence by how easily the Chargers were driving on them. It will be a few more games before this team gets a more accurate judge of it's strengths and weaknesses. But it is very clear that both offense and defense need a lot of work. For now we can breathe a sigh of relief that the Raiders didn't lose to the lowly Chiefs. If that were to happen I am not sure any more judgement would have been necessary. So I think I speak for all of us when I say: WHEW!

Part of J-Russ's accuracy problems may have been due to the wind.

JR was throwing the ball where the receiver was suppose to be, he is so use to getting rushers coming at him so quick he may have had a quick trigger. These mishaps come from lack of experience and will start coming to him soon once they break down the game and point it out to him.
Most teams either blitz a young qb to rattle him or disguise one to the point a rookie QB thinks he is gonna get blitzed and he gets happy feet... we whupped up on a sorry KC team but this game will be a good game to rally the troops in the film room with ... Kidos to Mario Henderson, he really stepped up to the plate....

Whew! Great job as usual Diz but here's a theme I've noticed and others have mentioned. We lose and it's Al Davis this and Al Davis that! We win and no mention of Al Davis???
Good Job Al!!!
Good job Ryan for adjusting this week. I've been and stay behind Kif on this deal. At some point we have to say enough is enough with coach turnover. Is Kif perfect - not even close but we have to make a stand and stick to the plan sometime. How about now. A healthy dose of DMac and Bush while the passing game develops and we attain pass blocking linemen. An attacking defense while we transform the Bigs and everyone playing with heart every game would keep us as fans interested and eventually respectable again - I'd even say respectable now as long as they all play with heart and we're moving forward.
That's all!

Kansas City is a bad team. Do doubt about it and we're not claiming to be very good but we are in-process and if we continue we will be the Team of The Decades Again! I find it odd we have 9er fans and Chef fans coming on this blog - can you name a worse team in the NFL than those two? We don't have much yet but we do have a W vs the Chefs and a Preseason W vs the 9ers.
Just Develop Baby!

Raider Blues... I still hate Al Davis! Damn him, trying to take away my happiness from a win against the Chiefs.
Finally Rob Ryan blitzes, and look at the result. Jeez, maybe he'll actually do it more often. Or maybe he'll forget that the blitz worked next week and then we'll have crappy D.
I agree, the line played good, Russell looked like a rook, McFadden looked REALLY good (except for the fumblitis). Happy with the W, but it's the Chiefs. Its one of those games that if they didn't win we'd be the laughing stock of the league (again).

Patrick, Rob and Dizzle,
Where do you guys hang out before the game I am taking a trip from Vegas up to the Bay for the Chargers game in 2 weeks (40th birthday present) and I wanted to hook up and say" hi" to the boys!!! Also, there used to be a bar/hofbrau just a block or so away from the colliseum, does anyone know the name or if its still there? Hardcore Raider bar and good food! Look forward to hearing from you.

Nice Win this week! Even though its the Chiefs..A win is win and it was on the road. Never easy to win on the road in the NFL. Esp. against a Chiefs team that "almost" beat the Patriots, in Foxboro. After week one, I thought this game in KC was going to be very close. But to my surprise, the Raiders dominated both sides of the football!
This week in Buffalo will be a real test. I think Buffalo is a playoff team. If the Raiders can go into Buffalo and grind out win...I will be impressed.

@Raider Blues:
I would say good job Al if he tried it Kiffin's way and allowed blitz's and let Kiffin run the offense. But this team for the last 5 years is ALL on Davis.
But any way. Good job players for staying focused and Ryan for the blitz and Kiffin for knowing all the conditions and when to call what play.

yes good job dizz. also tho dizzle i dunno if anyone else noticed this but the 2nd fumble of dmac came from someone's (forgot who) heel knocking it out of his arm when he was falling to the ground.. i mean, that's pretty much just bad luck... most RBs wouldn't have been able to protect it if you ask me... but yes both dmac and bush need to protect the ball better... now that they're going to be carrying the load of 90% of the offense now that fargas is out and we don't have a passing game.. that of which won't even develop until we get some real talent running good routes for russell to connect with... we should all expect a rookie to struggle like this.. i can name a few allstars now that struggled with their timing when they first started in this league.. so just give him time AL DAVIS DONT GET RID OF HIS COACH... wishful thinking at this point it seems...

49ers beat a better tean in the Seahawks than the Raiders beating the Chiefs......yeah they lost to Buffalo and San Francisco but they would beat the Raiders I would put money on it.....I still think the Raiders are better than the 49ers but The 49ers have put up alot more points than you guys so I just don't get how either team can talk any type of trash

Why would you say nice job to Al after this win? If anything we won inspite of him this week. He supposedly was talking of firing Kiffin before the game started. Now I'm not sure if this is true or not, but once again the silence out of him and Kiffen are not a good sign. The Chiefs are very very bad. I believe that was their 11th strait loss. We need a receiver who can get open (and catch) and Kiffen to have the confidence that he will be there at least till seasons end. He says it doesn't bother him, but how could it not?

Winning inspite of Al Davis?
Most of you do not know what you're talking about. It appears from my crystal ball the IQ of our fans is falling by the second.
Mr. Davis has done more for the league and the Raiders then any man alive, and we have to hear all this talk about an insubordinate kid who is complaining about what he can't control...and you all are so quick to find someone to blame, that you feel based on this, that Kiffin must be a savior....ha ha ha...nice logic!
Amazing....its no wonder this country fell apart long ago with ignorant people willing to throw their opinions around when they have absolutely no idea what their talking about....

hey elkyboy... can you win games when you go thro 5 coaches in 5 years? I THINK NO. it was funny when gruden came in.. al backed off and gave him time to develop a team .. and guess what? we damn near made it to the superbowl right?(we should have due to the tuck rule) so what does this tell you? ever since gruden he has 0 patience with anyone in the head coaching spot. it's a fact that you already know to be true.. with him still alive we will not be a winning team and it will set back all the players.

Are you in the running for 'Idiot of the Week" award?
Why else would you actually make reference to a PRE-SEASON win?
I have to ask.
Are you a kid?
Seriously...I mean...what? 15? 16??
No adult is that damn stupid that they actually bring up "Well, we won a preseason game".
Is it actually possible you're an adult..and this stupid?
If so..that would be sad..sorryass sad.
Now, peanut, here's YOUR reality check.
Last game that MATTERED the Niners kicked the Raiders ass. That means until we meet again in the regular season, Niners have bragging rights.
Leave it to a sorry Raider fan to get all excited about a preseason win.

Mike: As compared to what? Your lack of spine? You proving that lemmings do, in fact, own computers? lol...
You're so friggin' sad you actually think Al Davis is reading this thread, and is going to make a simpleton nobody his water boy.
Even waterboys have to have spines.
but..you do have the "I AM A KISSASS" part down pat.
Sadly..pathetically...so.

Mike: Didn't you try this stupid crap already??
Didn't I shove it down your throat, where you meekly waved that flag, and proceeded to whimper off??
Wasn't that you?
LMAO...yep...sure was.

Now..I'm SURE you haven't borrowed anyone's balls since you left then, so no doubt you'll continue to WAVE THAT WHITE FLAG.
Actually, Elkins, if you had an iota of a chance you would have defended your words then.
Don't expect you to now...just enjoy laughing at you...again...still :)

Amazing?.its no wonder this country fell apart long ago with ignorant people willing to throw their opinions around when they have absolutely no idea what their talking about?.
Speaking of one sorryass fool who threw around his opinions, when they had absolutely no idea what they're talking about? lol...wasn't that YOU, hypocrite?
Didn't you mouth off with YOUR opinions, only to snivel off like a worm??
http://mvn.com/nfl-raiders/2008/09/11/oakland-raiders-have-many-needs-but-is-heart-one-of-them/
Yep, lol...checked again...THAT'S YOU.
Now shut up until you either find your spine, AND your balls, or borrow someone's.
http://mvn.com/nfl-raiders/2008/09/11/oakland-raiders-have-many-needs-but-is-heart-one-of-them/
See, unlike YOU, Kiffin actually has a spine. Unlike YOU, he doesn't sit there like a little bitch, and gets shit on, and does nothing about it.
Unlike YOU, he stood up for himself.
It's called pride. He's also smart enough to know "This stupid old man wants me to quit. Not going to happen. His sorryass also thinks I'm going to take the blame for his idiot decisions. That's also not going to happen."
Hey, standing up for yourself isn't for everyone.
You seem to accept being a stepped on doormat.
Your choice.
I'm sure you're quite happy in your "situation" with your head up Al's ass. Actually suits you...quite nicely.

did anyone hear what the extent of Justin Fargas's injury is? I haven't heard yet.
#21
Posted by LDizzle, September 16, 2008 8:37 PM
raidz it is supposedly a groin pull and isn't too serious. It could keep him out for a couple of games. I don't know how solid that info is but that is what I understand the injury to be.
Elkins just stop with the "What Al Davis has done for this league..." bullshit as yet another attempt to take a shot at Kiffin. Your redundancy is quite lame.

Coaches have to man up and take responsibility instead of throwing assistant coaches under the buss. That being said the rumors of the firing should be diffused as it is a distraction. If Al's gonna fire Kiff no rumors need to spread, just fire him. Either that or Al needs to suck it up till years end for the sake of continuity and keep Kiff around if we have a winning record.

You an adult? hahaha! Thats about as funny as when the Niner's drafted Alex Smith. hahaha!
And Coach E seriously though did Kiffin have a one night stand with your wife or something? Because i swear you take shots at the guy like you have a huge grudge against him..

I'll say it AGAIN..you got shit on, on BOTH THREADS and whimpered off whining about 'go away...sniff sniff...just leave me alone"
Seems to be a mainstay with most of you Raider fans here, lol...what is this? The Raider reject board??
No..seriously..no bs..no smack..in all honesty, posting at different Niner/Ram/Raider sites, this one isn't just the slowest, but is also the meekest. Seems few here actually follow the team, and most immediately tuck tail and whimper off.
Seems to just be this board..on numerous others most don't only have an opinion, but they actually follow the team.
also regardless of whether the Raiders win or lose, posters post..but here? lol...it's like Siberia.
You've got the "challenged" posters..the "pat T" the "kushmans" and the resident idiot that seems to be around as a punching bag, "LDitzle" who seem to be all that post here, with an occasional courtesy stop in but others.
Considering the slew of cross posting handles, like the numerous ones LDitzle creates, just to prop himself "WildCat" and others, it's very likely this board has a dozen or less actual posters..which explains the massive "QUIT PICKING ON US" fest that seems to be prominent.
Don't get me wrong..laughing at you few is still enjoyment..it's just kind of easy...you know?
Oh..and yeah Pat, lol...shit for brains..."who cares that Russell was the worst qb in the NFL last weekend? Because yeah, you beat a really really bad KC team..with their 3rd string qb in...so yeah, why worry? I mean, horrible team? and all Russell could get out of 17 tries is 55 yards? Yeah, what's to worry about...DUMBASS.
Stay here, Patty..right here..do NOT go to any other boards.
This board suits you just fine.

I think you would have been better not directing me to a post where you compare the Seahawks with the Chiefs..while trying to explain why Thigpen, of all qb??s, outplayed Russell.
55 yards passing?? For a WHOLE GAME???
Is that a record low?
I think it might be.
Only qb in the game?whole game?THE STARTER?and the team gets 55 yards passing.
Hell, even in the Ice Bowls, with zero visibility, I think the teams got more than that.
Yeah, lol..Russell?what a qb stud.
Uh?any of you care to withdraw, now, your ??guarantees? that Russell was going to the ProBowl this year?
OR EVER???

Mike: You got SHIT ON ON BOTH THREADS...and you whimpered off ON BOTH THREADS.
You sure you're a Raider fan? Seriously..I'm damn sure you're embarrassing to other Raider fans, it's just they don't want to rock the boat and say 'Stop sounding like a pussy, Patricia".
Which leaves that up to me :)

And your team also won so why don't you worry about the help your team needs.. And its funny how you say im a pussy when your the one that comes into a Raiders blog to talk trash.. Mr. Davis is the best team owner in the world and when hes dead I will run the team. I will try to make this a P.S.L. team again but not in Oakland. Winning is not important nor is fan-friendlyness. All I ask is that you pay thru the nose for the right to sit and watch this peice of crap that I call a football team this time in Los Angeles. Home of 12.5 million suckers. Amy.
