Oakland Raiders to sign Ashley Lelie: Breaking Oakland Raider News

It is being reported that the Oakland Raiders have agreed to terms with wide receiver Ashley Lelie. Lelie will join fellow former Bronco Javon Walker in the Raiders' wide receiver corps. The contract has not yet been signed, nor is there any word on who will be cut.

This would be a good time to give Johnnie Lee Higgins the boot for an experienced receiver.� Both Todd Watkins and Chaz Schilens have flashed more potential than Higgins. The Raiders could easily chose to go with six receivers and unload some of the other dead wood that made the first 53 man roster.

The move for Lelie is a bit of a surprise as he could not live up to his potential in Denver or San Francisco. Hopefully, the problem was the quarterbacking of Brain Gresie and the flavor of the month in San Francisco, and he will flourish with JaMarcus Russell and his cannon arm, as well as the coaching of James Lofton.

We better hope Lofton has some steel toed boots he can wear to practice so he can kick Lelie's ass every time he starts bitching and moaning. He is also one letter away from having a girls first and last name ie Ashley Leslie. The only good thing about this signing would be if it means JLH gets his walking papers. Or as Patrick said, one of the other dead weight players we kept goes. If Watkins or Schilens gets cut I will be even more mad than I am right now about this move. Those two deserve to be here and certainly don't deserve to be cut to make room for an ungrateful primadonna like Lelie.

Come on guys, quit being so hard on JLH. Yeah he hasnt been the greatest for us but hey lets still give him a chance. I mean I would rather see Robert Thomas out then him.

What about eric parker and terry glenn and so many others out there?!?! Why lelie.

Lelie did have one good 1,000 yard season with the Broncos though.

He does have the speed but can he catch the ball.

???Roydell Williams tore it up as recently as last year,55 receptions...coming off an injury, seems to fit right in with the rest of the RAIDER receiving core, or Marcus Monk, rated higher than either of the WR's we drafted...also played at Arkansas with runDMc and we add another slouch/loser...primadona..CMON Mr Davis your killing me!

I would have been much happier to pick up Eric Parker. I think that we should have also picked up 2 undrafted FA WRs to see what could happen with those few that were not drafted. just some ideas that big Al should've thought of..

Wait Roydell Williams is a free agent now? I didnt know that.. We need to sign him ASAP then.. I doubt the raiders will cut JLH.. I think he deserves a chance to prove himself..

Pat T the plain truth through is that if we pick up another reciever (or perhaps two if Chad Jackson signs) SOMEONE has to go and Watkins and Schilens deserve to stay more than JLH. They are both much better receivers and we could throw just about anyone back there on returns (Branch when his arm heals) and they would do a better job than Higgins.

Ok I take that back. The Raiders and Ashley Lelie have agreed to a one year deal and the team has until Wednesday to make a cut.

BREAKING NEWS: FB Luke Lawton is in a try out and is expected to sign with the team as Griffiths backup. Nothing is official yet but he already has a locker and a uniform so it seems that he will be signed. Which means even more cuts. I think this is good news. Lawton played really good for the Raiders in limited action and showed a reliability in the passing game as well.

Also Lechler is expected back on Wednesday which means that he should play in week one. This means that Pakulak will be released from the Practice squad.

lelie doesn't seem so bad a pic up at this stage. Who else is out there with experience? Want to take a chance on a rookie then plug in schillens. I think thats how it's spelled. Anyway, if it's lelie then take it and roll with it.

I keep reading that you guys are complaining that we didn't pick up Chad Jackson though. All faults aside, Ashley Lelie is a more accomplished reciever than Chad Jackson. Had he been any good, Belichick would have used the kid in some capacity. I guess this all means that we'll be targeting a reciever in the offseason. Anquan Boldin? Roy Williams? that would be nice...

Have to agree with LDizzle and say that if Schilens or Watkins gets cut for Lelie I would be pissed. Lelie's highlight film on NFL.com is him catching a 49 yard pass then immediately getting a 5 yard penalty for spiking. Hardly a glowing reference.

We now have two wide outs with a bit of former glory behind them who we are 'hoping' that their experience and big name billing will translate into a big season. If it does I think it will be more because of the talent of J-Russ or the threat of our running game more than anything.

Makes you wonder what a guy has to do to make a grab at a starting spot. I think I'm right in saying that Watkins led the team in receiving in pre-season. Now I just see him and Schilens sliding down the order.

As for Lawton he was released on 08/30 but Kiff' has acknowledged that he needs FB cover so expect somebody soon.

I'm happy for the move. When I seen that A Lelie was cut, I was thinking pick him up Al. Lelie has a history of injury problems. When he is healthy he is actually a pretty good WR. Out of all the WRs out there Lelie was the best one availible. Again, just like when we got Walker. This was the best Al Davis could do for his team.

Interesting tidbit regarding Lelie.

With Denver, he got all pushed out of shape because the Bronco's just signed a WR to a big contract, apparently for two years. Lelie threatened to hold out. Had he stayed out for all of training camp, it would have equaled his complete year's salary in fines.

Bronco's traded Lelie to Atlanta, where he had a less than mediocre year..then came to SF where he had a whooping 10 catch season, while laden with injuries, including up to and through most of this years training camp.

The player that the Bronco's signed, for two years, whose contract really annoyed Lelie???

Javon Walker.

Yep...THE "$50 Million Javon Walker".

I have a feeling Lelie is STILL shaking his head over Walker's contract..BOTH of them.

Pray to god Mike Martz doesn't ascend to the head coaching position. None of the quarterbacks on that roster will be able to handle Martz's scheme, more specifically the lack of protection they're going to get. Never mind that with the exception of Frank Gore, not ONE player on that offense fits in that type of scheme anyway. What you will have is a mess. Waitaminute....that's what you have currently.

I am concerned with signing Lelie. We said we were going to build the teams character and get team players. It doesn't seem like we are worried about that anymore. Hope we start out good, cause there are some suspects that will shut it down if they don't like the way things are going.
