Oakland Raiders Camp Battles: Offensive Guards-Can anyone displace Robert Gallery and Cooper Carlisle as the front wall?

Tonight's edition of the ongoing "Camp Battles" series focuses on the strength of the Oakland Raiders' offensive line: the guards. The tandem of Robert Gallery and Cooper Carlisle led the resurgence of the Raiders' running game in 2007. Can any of the guys in training camp displace either of these two? Who will be the depth should one of them go down? Let's take a look.

Projected Starters: Left guard: Robert Gallery, Right Guard: Cooper Carlisle

Robert Gallery was considered a bust and on his way to becoming the most reviled Raider since Todd Marinovich, but Tom Cable moved him over to guard where he has thrived. Prior to last year, his career had been an lesson in how not to develop talent, but the consistency that he now has should continue his improvement. Cooper Carlisle is no superstar, but he is a workhorse. He was even acknowledged by Ryan Brown of Home of the Chiefs as the best right guard in the AFC West. He should continue opening gaping holes for the Raiders rushers to blast through.

Projected Depth: Brandon Rodd

Brandon Rodd is the only other guard listed on the Raiders' roster. Rodd was an undrafted free agent out of Arizona State who was picked up this year. Likely candidates for additional depth will be found in the losers in the battle for the center position that I will be detailing soon. The Raiders may be looking to pick up some additional depth at this position before camp starts. (Paul McQuistan is listed as a guard on raiders.com, but has had more success playing tackle. To note, the Raiders site also has Gallery listed as a tackle.)

What to Look For:

Can Rodd show that he can make the roster as an UDFA? Will Jake Grove, Chris Morris, or Jesse Boone slide over from the center position to provide depth at guard, or will the Raiders pick up another player or two?

WildCard:

There is only one guard on the roster besides the projected starters. The Raiders are likely looking to bring in some more depth and competition at that position, as competition is Lane Kiffin's mantra.

I hope Rodd makes the cut. He's one of the best UDFA's out there and my third favorite (Ronnie Pentz and Darrell Strong are the others) Your center-guard theory could work with Grove. He wants a job, he's played guard, and Morris is apparently out performing him. This would solve the lack of guards and give us a quality backup.

I think Gallery will be a good guard, but lets be honest. He was drafted to be our starting left tackle(the most important position) for the next 12 years, with the #2 overall pick. So unless he goes to the probowl at least 8 times and goes to the hall of fame at his gaurd position, he is a bust to a certain degree. Look back over time and see how many gaurds have been drafted in the top 5 picks.

well, now that i got the javon walker thing off my chest. lets talk about the o-line. i agree that the running game and pass blocking was 10x better than the 06 season. but lets get personal, Robert Gallery. dude you are suck a bust! forget the fact that your blocking sucks, your not disaplined at all. Hey raider nation look at the stats.... Gallery accounted for more than half of all false starts and holding calls we had last year, being that there are some writers that think i dont know what i'm talking about (ie. my comments about justin fargas and javon walker.). In the season opener vs. sad diego 2006, gallery was made "btich" by shawn "steriod" mariman. as a raiders die hard, man i want you to succeed. i want to not wonder what if.... we picked roy williams(wr), larry fitzgerald(wr). well that time is not a-hole. get your fat ass in gear, listen to coach cable and become the monster you were at Iowa. this teams depends too much on you and even more the entire o-line to be in the playoff hunt. besides that, you need to step up and be a leader, not a follower ( that goes for your game as well). i'll be there come september 8th. please dont make a bitch of your self like the last time we played a season opener at home, on mondaynight football, agaist a divison rival. Every lineman on the Raiders roster should be listed as a Guard until somebody steps up and proves they can consistently play tackle, particularly Left Tackle! We've got a roster full of tackle prospects who have underachieved and are better suited to be a Guard - and I'm yet to be convinced there is a tackle in the bunch.

Have you ever played a down in the NFL? I grew up with Gallery and played football with him as well. He was one of the best ball players ive ever seen and at Iowa he was a monster! Last year he was a force at guard. I think he is in the right position now. I'd really like to see you get out of your armchair and do what he does. Lay off Gallery! He's not a bust!

Telling are the stats on Gallery but telling what? If he jumps and it intimidates the other side just enough to get off the ball then it's worth it. If he jumps and it intimidates noone then it's hurting our squad.

I think Gallery's decent at Guard but the two guards need to continue to get better and we need to continue pursuit of tackles - We've spent our money on other things and that's ok - we took what the market would bear but a solid LT this offseason would be just what Raider Nation needs!

I can totally appreciate you backing up a friend in Gallery. But we should also be honest with our friends if they are truely our friends. Gallery has not performed anywhere near expectations for a guy drafted in the position he was. He has not performed at guard in a matter that represents the spot he was drafted in. I'm sorry. He has gotten better I will say. I believe he needs to continue to make huge strides. If he remains where he's at, I think he should be replaced with someone better at the first chance.

good article pat! he wont be a bust at LG I promise you raider nation. In fact his penalties will dramatically decrease(much like the 2nd half of the 07 season)... he has so much potential when he doesn't have to catch a quick and powerful DE swinging around him. That was obviously not his game here people, as he is too slow to do so. look for him to make the key blocks on DTs for the run/passing plays in the mad scientist tom cable's zone blocking system.

as for cooper... he is a workhorse much like newberry and sims, so naturally i have complete faith in the guy to be our starter and make the right block with gallery on the other side.

To get down to it, the O-Line of the Raiders is nowhere near where it needs to be to be a playoff team. They did, however, improve by cutting sacks down and rushing better. The 49er line, on the other hand, regressed as their rushing numbers went way down. They also got everyone who holds the ball (Gore, Smith, etc.) injured. You bragged about being offensively inept by saying it was with your backups but the only reason you got to your backups is because your line got them killed all year. In fact, I think the 49ers didn't score an offensive TD until the 3rd game.

As far as your repeated challenges to fight, I don't see your address anywhere. You hide behind your internet postings like some type of digital Wizard of Oz. If you were a real man, you wouldn't make all these "threats" against people who can't find you to teach you a lesson in respect. But I'm sure you'll give them the chance.
