Detailing Oakland Raiders' receiver Javon Walker's injuries

The reports on the extent of Javon Walker's injuries have been sketchy at best. He was found unconscious according to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Jason Jones reports that he has an orbital fracture. Since he was unconscious, it is likely there is a concussion involved, especially coupled with an orbital fracture, which is a broken eye socket. Neither of these bode well for Walker's NFL future, but lets take an in depth look in what exactly those injuries are.

An orbital fracture is a serious injury in that it means that the bones of the eye socket are fractured. This was the very injury that ended Minnesota Twins Hall of Fame outfielder Kirby Puckett's career. What exactly does this mean for Javon?

The following is excerpted from emedicne.com:

Orbital floor fractures may result when a blunt object, which is of equal or greater diameter than the orbital aperture, strikes the eye. The globe usually does not rupture, and the resultant force is transmitted throughout the orbit causing a fracture of the orbital floor.

Translation: This is caused by being hit in the face with something bigger than the eye socket, which would cause the bones to break. (OUCH!)

It continues: "A complete ocular evaluation is essential to ensure that no injury to the globe or optic nerve has occurred."

Translation: They have to check his eyes to see whether the eyeball (globe) or the nerves that translate the information from the eyes to the brain are damaged.

This is a huge cause for concern, because if there is any damage to either his eyeball or optic nerves from the blunt force trauma of being hit or from any shards of bone from the fracture, this seriously endangers his eyesight. This goes beyond whether or not he will ever play football again, but also to his quality of life. We will be tracking this story here at TFDS as there are developments.

"Physical activity is limited for about 3-6 weeks after surgery to prevent re-injury. This may involve restricting gym class for students. Any contact sports should be avoided for that period. Nose blowing also should be avoided for about 4-6 weeks to prevent orbital emphysema."

Translation: It does not look good. Javon can't blow his nose for at least a month, and training camp is about a month away. Given that it states 3-6 weeks for kids in gym class, it would seem that longer would be needed for an NFL player who is going to take blows to the head.

Whilst a concussion was not specifically stated in any of the reports, given that he had essentially a broken face and was found unconscious, it would be a reasonable inference that he had a concussion as well. We often hear of players having concussions, and that is easy to dismiss as he just "had his bell rung," but a concussion is a potentially serious injury.

According to the Kaiser Permanente web site:

A concussion is a brain injury that is caused by a sudden blow to the head or to the body. The blow shakes the brain inside the skull, which temporarily prevents the brain from working normally. (emphasis added)

That is no laughing matter. Any concussion has the potential to cause long term brain damage, which is why the NFL has recently been studying ways to better prevent and treat game day concussions. Despite that severity, unless Walker has a history of concussions, which I don't believe he does, the concussion alone should not derail his career.

If Walker's orbital fracture is minor with no additional complications, and he can resume play in the 4-6 weeks mentioned above, then he should be able to resume practice by the time training camp opens. This would be the absolutely the most optimistic outlook. Considering he was found in an alley unconscious, I somehow don't expect this to play out along the best case scenario. The worst case scenario is that it is a career ending injury. Odds are, it is somewhere between those two.

Not a doctor, but researching medical information here at TFDS

CHAMPAGNE SPRAYING PRECEDED DARRENT WILLIAMS MURDER

Posted by Mike Florio on June 17, 2008 (Pro Football Talk Rumor Mill) 1:02 p.m.

Maybe it’s a function of things being fairly slow right now in NFL circles. Regardless, the Javon Walker situation has created a major buzz on the Internet.

Then again, how often does a high-profile receiver turn up knocked out cold in the street after a weekend of spraying expensive champagne at one or more night clubs?

There are completely unfounded rumors (we repeat . . . completely unfounded rumors) that the incident started with a champagne bidding war between Walker and Floyd Mayweather, and that a member of Mayweather’s entourage later stumbled upon Walker and proceeded to beat him into a pulp.

Regardless, strong similarities exist between Walker’s most recent incident and the circumstances that preceded the shooting death of Darrent Williams. Here’s a quote from an August 11, 2007 AP item regarding an interview of Walker aired by HBO’s Real Sports: “[A]nother Broncos receiver, Brandon Marshall, and his cousin were partying with Williams’ group that night and began spraying champagne around, ’some of which hit a club patron and his friend, who confronted Williams and his entourage.’ Those men flashed gang signs and were escorted out of the club, said members of a rap group from Williams’ hometown of Fort Worth, Texas, who were with him that night.”

Apart from the question of whether the more recent champagne spraying and the subsequent cold-cocking are in any way related, we’d like to think that Walker would have sworn off champagne spraying given its role in the chain of events that resulted in Darrent Williams dying in Javon Walker’s arms.

When Walker explained to Andrea Kremer of Real Sports the reason for keeping his bloody shirt from that night, Walker said, “It’s just something that reminds me every day of what could happen and this is what happened to my friend.”

Maybe it takes a second bloody shirt to help Walker realize that nothing good ever comes from spraying champagne (or any other beverage) onto a group of people that might not necessarily want to be sprayed with it.

Its not like they found him in a bad part of town. He was found at Winnick and Koval and thats just off the strip, like behind it. Google Earth baby. Its my guess he was abducted, got the $hit kicked out of him, and was dumped behind the casino. He had to be with friends, cause I truly believe he is not that stupid. What sometimes happens in Vegas is people are accosted in bathrooms where there are no cameras. Now, I don't want to speculate, I'm just trying to figure out how he ended up where he ended up without the people he was with noticing his disappearance. A bathroom attack, a back door, and a waiting SUV sound like a reasonable theory to me with absolutely no information to go on. Anyone that knows about crime in Vegas understands that things like that happen all the time. He was probably marked, an opportunity arose, and some criminal, my guess is multiple criminals, took advantage of the situation. Total guess though. lol........sigh....

Spencer- good to see you again buddy. That is a very reasonable theory. I an sure that Metro is having the tryst and the other nearby casinos checking their tape from the eyes in the sky. Hopefully they get some leads quick. Alot that goes down in Vegas is nothing nice. For that matter, it could be that some of his 'friends' turned on him, or maybe a woman he thought he was going to score with. So many possibilities, its dangerous to speculate until Metro has something.

I guess we should look at the bright side, Javon too, hes alive. He's lucky hes not missing in the desert in some hole. How much does a friggin bodyguard cost anyway Javon!! You make how much money, spraying all those bottles of Dom, and you cant get smart and get a body guard or two when you decide to go to Vegas and big time it? This is just stupid! Your best friend dies in your arms, and you still don't get it! None of these fools get it really. They all feel untouchable, like it wont happen to them, but it always catches up to you in the end.

Walker is a good example of a player who needs to be evaluated and fitted with an orthodic device used by the N.E.Patriots. The basis of the procedure is to protecect a major facial nerve center housed within the temporal mandibular joint. This now should be the focus of any further research in the study of preventing concussion on the field. It's not the helmet, it's the chin strap that causes the injury. Only a corrective retainer like mouth guard has shown any promise. www.mahercor.com

Kiffin said it best..."it's an important month for the vets!...refering to between the end of nex week and July 25th. Poor judgement is gonna cost us in this one. Javon should have been studying his play book instead of gambling with his new found fortune. I'm sorry he was attacked, it's dreadful. Seems no one is safe, but good judgement can't be beat. Roethllisberger's motorcycle accident was an err in judgement but that was kinda different. It's not like Walker is John Matuszak, or Alzado, or Otis Sistrunk.

This is an important time for vets! I hope that the rest of them are paying attention. Walker is actually lucky to be alive. While I was not there, so I can only speculate, he was probably loaded wtih both Dom Perignon and CASH.

How much gaaranteed money did he get in his contract. I hope Al has a stupidity clause in the fine print. STUDY YOUR PLAYBOOK! PERFORM WELL! GET PAID!

I like Higgins, Will Buchanon, Arman Shields, & Chaz Schilens dispite that they are unproven. A good many teams field youngsters that perform well.

Anyway, I hope that he is ok, for his sake. I'd never wish anyone harm. There are however consequences for irresponsibility.

What happend to Walker is tragic. This could be a career-ending injury that happens to be non-football related.

But although we're pointing the finger at Walker and claiming poor judgement, the one who really should be called-out is Al Davis for bringing this guy in.

Walker was ran out of Green Bay because of poor attitude and released from Denver because he was injury-prone and underachieving. Does this stop Al Davis from giving him a hefty paycheck? No, and the player who gave the above-mentioned teams and fans gas-pains is doing the same for his new team and fans.

What's an error in judgement? Al Davis knew this guy had issues and still brought him in.

Let's pray Walker is healthy for opening day, but based on his past, that'll all I'll give.

I'm a 14-yr. PSL/Season Tix holder of 2 seats. 'Have not missed a game since the 13-yr. long roadtrip to L. A. I'm sick of BOTH these punks like Walker who don't learn from their mistakes but repeat them, as well as Al Davis who also repeats his mistakes and also doesn't learn from them. Thank God that Darren

McFadden and Jamarcus Russell have good heads on their shoulders. Also, we are fortunate that we drafted and signed some good young wide receivers. We just need 1 of them to step up & play with Curry.

I'm with OakRaidFan on this one. Forget Walker. Davis needs to learn from this one. In the seventies he could get away with taking chances on a bunch of party animals and still come out on top. This is 2008 for gods sake. The stakes are higher, the world is different, much cruler, much more harsh. Davis needs to re-evaluate his "gambling addiction" and stop taking in these idiots. Trash is trash, leave it in the dumster.

Lofton can and will develop one of the new guys.

Walker is not that stupid? I'm confused. Anyone who goes to Las Vegas, buys 15 bottles at $1,000 each, and sprays the bottles (instead of drinking them) is stupid. This is what happens when you give money to idiots. A stupid person becoming an idiot. But perhaps the biggest idiot is the one who gave Walker the money in the first place. Didn't the drive-by shooting in which Walker was involved raise a red flag? I bet it did, but it was disregarded. It is decisions like this one (hiring Walker) that have sunk my Raiders deeper into the mud year after year.

Wow! If that doesn't show you Al "the freak" Davis needs to get lost from Oakland than I don't know what does. First, he signs this underachieving whinning injury prone baby. Then he gives him like 16 million guranteed with more to come. I don't know what its like in Oakland but if it was d-town we would assemble a mob with pitch forks and rocks and burn that curse out of existance. I don't feel bad for javon. He's an idiot. But i can bet "the freak" perpetuated the problem by giving him randy moss type money which then javon made it rain with and got everyone pissed off and ended up in him getting pistol whipped. Damn, javon thought you would learn by now.

Javon is a freakin moron! This is exactly what the Nation is trying to avoid. I mean we are just weeks, shit even days away from OTAs and most of our guys are getting in the mind to JUST WIN BABY! Except for this jackass who we can hopefully waive or release and reclaim some of that $55 M. Javon Walker is all talk and he obviously has no ability to back it up. He doesn't respect what we're building with this team. The Raider Nation will soon rise again. And we don't need deadweight like Javon Walker! Hopefully D-Mac and the other young guys get a lesson from this punk-ass. Stay away from Vegas and Nightclubs until you win a G-D Superbowl. I hope we get rid of Javon Walker cuz if he is some medical waste of space on the sideline the Blackhole will rip him to shreads! Hope it was worth it Javon... I wonder what your boy D-Will is thinking right now. Oh thats right he learned the hard way.

D-will did learn the hard way but i wish and many others wish it was javon that was murdered on the morning of jan 1st 2007. D-will was such a genuine person. He loved kids and his mom read a page out of his diary that said he wanted to help kids stay away from drugs and gangs. So she made it her goal to build on to the boys and girls club. As D-will said, "Already"! Javon should have learned from that and used that in life. As in enough "Already".

Anyone know how much we are on the hook for if he is done? I can't think of any other available receivers for us. Curry, Carter, and Higgins as a third does not envoke great confidence. Russel needs someone. Maybe it is time for the Ocho Cinco rumers to run again, but he is not the ideal teammate either.

This DOES suck.

The police said he was in fair condition in the hospital. That doesn't sound career ending!

I hate athletes of this caliper that we should have never signed. Its no coincidence he was booted from GB where character counts, and even shanahan kicked him to the curb. Does Al do any behavioral analysis, I was not there but I do believe( A) Javon had a bad attitude in GB, (B). He did help to instigate the fight in the club with known Gang bangers (you have to be a idiot not to know how to identify one they give thereselves us by there dress code and gang signs) that led to Darrent death and (C). It is well known came to Oakland way out of shape and couldnt perform, this guy is a joke for responsible althetes that would never jeopordize the team or themselves by popping bottles, making rain, you can gamble all you want if you want to lose money thats on you, but protect yourselve by being smart, you got thousands of people counting on you and reporting to camp out shape, wheres your focus Javon arent you trying to recover form injury and win a championship. This disgust me, Al needs to let someone else bring guys in he is making some crazy moves over paying these chumps! He wasnt going to do sh%t this season and this proves it. Nnamdhi would never be caught in this situation, hes a model raider NOT HALL , WALKER, SANDS, OR KELLY! RYAN SHOULDA BEEN FIRED, KIFFIN IS RIGHT! I RESPECT YOU AL BUT ITS TIME TO STEP FOR REAL!!

Im no fan of Javon but cant win no this one. If he was with a big posse people would take issue with that yet people are complaining he appeared to be alone. Best bet is to hang with close friends that wont let you into a bad spot or will be willing to drag you out if you put yourself in one. Unfortunetly when someone has that much cash dumped onto them the seem to think they are bulletproof and refuse to listen to anyone.

The bottom line is guys need to get smarter, this behavior possibly influenced the shooting in Denver and he did not learn from it, thats the biggest problem with the entire mess.

I agree with sec116, we should wait and see how this thing plays out before we turn our backs on Walker. He obviously made a big mistake by leaving himself vulnerable to getting stomped on, but as long as he can play ball without these injuries altering his playmaking skills, then as far as I am concerned I still love the guy.

But for the record if he jeoperdized his future with the Raiders by doing the same stupid sh*t that got his buddy killed only a year ago, and is too cool to pull his head out his azz, then I say f*ck him. He should feel really stupid to have to look DWills mother in the eye and say, "Ms Williams, I sprayed all those ni**as down and I don't give a sh*t man. Cuz I'm too cool for cool biatch!"

But of course I am really saying that I believe the young brother was taken advantage of by the evil doers of the world and he was purely the victom of an unsolicited act of violence.....that is IF he shows up to training camp of course!

You dont jus wish death on someone or wish someone else would've been murdered thats just not right... DUMBASSES!

AND SECTION116 THE PROBLEM IS NOT SERIOUS INJURIES MIGHT MEAN HE'S OK TO CONTINUE WITH A REGULAR LIFE NOT A FOOTBALL LIFE... BUT ANYWAYS IF HE'S FINE BY THE BEEGINING OF TRAINING CAMP BUT CANT HAVE ANY CONTACT MAYBE HE CAN JUST BUILD SOME CHEMISTRY WITH J.R, YOU KNOW THROW SOME PASSES AROUND UST TO GET TO KNOW EACHOTHER... BUT RIGHT NOW THIS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN FOOTBALL... HOPE JAVON'S CONDITION WILL IMPROVE AND HE'LL BE FINE AND LEARN FROM HIS MISTAKES...

What is the deal with all these f-ups with talents. I'm a Raiders fan and I'm not too keen on the Javon Walker pick up thus far. Prior to being cut from Denver Javon is quoted as saying something to likes of "I need a fresh start." Well here is your fresh start; however when you do the same crap that did in your previous bad situation the results usually end up similar. In an article on ESPN there's a line in which Javon says that the Williams shooting was linked to a dispute that might have been spurned by then teamate Brandon Marshall spraying champaign into the crowd. Help me understand this, why then after you've gotten this new start you requested would you be at a club spraying champaign into a crowd. I mean honestly how many times do you have to run head first into a brick wall before you realize it's just not an intelligent move. I don't want hear he was a victim of robery, because he was a victim of his own stupidity even more so. I hope that Javon puts up some video gamesque numbers this year, because right now I'm hoping that there is some form of escape clause in his contract.
