June 1st: What happened to the Oakland Raiders cutting Jordan?

When will Lamont Jordan finally get cut?

You hear about it beginning as soon as the last game whistle of the season blows for each team. Players that have outlived their usefulness in the current uniform that they're wearing. In some cases, it's talked about before a team has even finished its season. The June 1st cuts. For many veterans coming off of a bad season or being replaced due to injury by a younger player, this is the reality of the NFL.

Many reporters and analysts look to June 1st as the day that teams get rid of their dead weight and begin the second session of free agency every year. This year, it's eerily quiet. Could it be that we just haven't heard anything because June 1st is on a Sunday this year? I'm sure that today, we'll hear of some moves since it will be Monday and everyone will be open for business. It won't be like years past though since now teams can cut players prior to June 1st and still designate it as such in order to allow the player to find a team before the following year.

Maybe I'm forgetting someone, but besides Robert Gallery, the only head called for over the last season that's still around is Lamont Jordan. Ok, so it's starting to look like the beloved Robert Gallery has withstood Raider Nation's ire to become acceptable. So why is Jordan still around?

He's due somewhere in the realm of $4 million this season and the Raiders are in need of cap room with Nnamdi Asomugha and Darren McFadden still needing to be signed to long term deals. Any escalators the Raiders may have needed moved over to next year can now be moved and yet I'm surprised that he's still on the team...well I would've been about four months ago.

Al Davis has long been a man to hold a grudge. For players that he deems have worked hard for him, he'll release them and let them find a job elsewhere such as Schweigert and Rhodes. When players have underperformed and it's thought that it's due to effort, it seems that they are retained until the last possible second.

After Warren Sapp, a player that Davis respects, is quoted:

“after three games last season, LaMont Jordan led the NFL in rushing. But LaMont is like the worst offseason running back I’ve ever been around; he was out of shape and couldn’t keep it going. Then, remember late in the season, Justin Fargas was slashing and cutting and gaining all those yards? (McFadden) is the same guy, but he’s faster. I promise you, this guy will hit those holes and take it to the house, and then our offensive line will slash people up.”

It makes you wonder if that is something that the always talking defensive lineman also told Davis in his exit interview. The Raiders have until the 15th before Asomugha has to sign his tender. Something will have to happen by that time, or else there will be another reported scandal associating the Raiders with ineptitude. My money's on Jordan being cut, and McFadden and Asomugha signed to long term deals on the 14th. Anyone want to take that bet?

Does anyone but me see that Jason Taylor wants out of Miami? Maybe big Al has something goin' on. This is just the kind of trade he is so famous for. Just a thought.

Rob,

Thanks to you and PP for making this offseason a little more bearable.

I'll bet Jordan's cut and McFadden's signed by the 14th, but Nnamdi being signed to a long term deal is really wishful thinking. Of course, we all hope it happens.

Who else is a candidate to be cut to save cap room? All the chumps I wanted gone are pretty much already gone (Stu, Porter, Sims, Brayton, Fabian, McClown...).

Besides Jordan, I'm thinking we could also get rid of: S Williams, J Grove, JLHiggins, and Terdell Sands if he's not in tip-top shape.

I could never get over Lamont admitting that he really didnt study or understand the offense when Shell and Walsh were here.

In my mind he should have been cut or traded after that. I'll be blad when he's gone.

Yes yes most of the Raider Nation has really done there homework when it comes to the June cuts and I agree with the suggestions from pojonz (way to call it) but there is still one or two free agents that would look great in the silver & black.... How about "Booger McFarland?" or maybe even bring back Coleman for one year along with Nnamdi, RunDMC, Odell and Daunte (bringing Daunte in only because it would be his second year with that offensive scheme and I think he would fair better if D Russ goes down

It would be interesting to sign thurman. we could have the option of using a 3-4 every now and then...

what if we signed rosevelt colvin if he hasn't been signed yet? sure he's old and a ex-patriot but i recall a player named bill romanowski who was also old and an ex-BRONCO.

i also have a horrible idea of a nightmare lurking in the shadows: Nnamdi Asomugha leaving. That's a typical Al move. Cut a loyal player for a new younger one (Hall) but he resigned fargas so who knows

I think we've done a good job so far of getting rid of dead weight and bringing in new talent and maybe have a little more tweekin' to do but over all I'd say we 're in place to take #1-2 spot in the west .Oh and Silver&black88, I know what you mean but don't worry, not even Al Davis is crazy enough to let Asomugha go , he's THE BEST corner in the league ,I don't care what anyone says and Al is still a brilliant football mind.

if al lets go asomugha, i'll never forgive him for it... i mean, i dont think he's that stupid tho, he's just taking his sweet time on the subject. i dont think hes dumb enough to get rid of the best tandem that is hall/asomugha of CBs in the NFL. As they will prove that if they remain teamed up this '08 season.

I can't understand why so many Raider-fans have turned on LaMont Jordan as if it's HIS fault that the team has struggled. Before his injury, Jordan was among the tops in yardage last year and ran hard for the Raiders. Some people need to really open their eyes to reality and think for themselves as opposed to just being a parrot and repeating what all of the other "fans" say. Jordan is not the second coming of Barry Sanders, but he ran effectively for us last year behind an o-line that was still finding it's way.

Nnamdi Asomugha will be signed, don't you worry about that. Nobody wants another Woodson senario. Aso will be signed by August. He and the Raiders, undoubtably already have the contract under control, they are just waiting for McFad and the other draftees to come aboard. Jordan will be gone by the end of the week.

Nnamdi has been a hard worker and very productive, Al will do whatever he has to resign him. And we should cut Lamont because we don't need him but let's see who steps up before we cut anymore guys of course Williams, Grove, and JLH, are on the chopping block

I fully expect Asomugha to be signed. I was at the 1984 Super Bowl watching the Raiders demolish the Foreskins. But it was not until I got home and watched the tapes before I realized how totally Haynes and Hayes had shut down and DEMORALIZED their wideouts. History is never lost on Al Davis. With the Raiders penchant for secrecy and Asomugha's class, I am not surprised that their negotiations are being held in private and not in the newspaper.

I think davis placing the tag on Nnamdi only bought Al time to make a statement in the free agency and also sign there number four pick.. I think darren will be signd this week, makin it easier to focus on Nnamdi.. The only reason why davis put the tag on him in the ifrst place was because Nnamdi's 2008 contract was lower than he was worth so he opted out.. davis only made the move to buy some time.. and davis know's this.. and we all know that davis like's to save money so when it come's time to sign Nnamdi one year deal not enough, it would be cheaper to keep her.. longer deal well save money..

Aso WILL be signed by the 15th. His cap number needs to come down from the tag price and a long term deal with a signing bonus prorated would do just that. Al will very likely wait as long as possible to let Jordan go but less to do with a grudge against him but rather more to do with the idea of KC or Denver grabbing him off the waiver wire before the 15th. This is the same reason he didn't cut one of them half way through last season and opted to keep Bush on IR the whole season.

Michael I have been wanting the Raiders to sign Anthony McFarland and Rosevelt Colvin for months now so I obviously agree with you on that one. And once Jordan is cut (and perhaps others as well) and Nnamdi's cap number is brought down, I see there being a good possibility of one of those guys being signed. Or I hope anyway. Thurmonds cap number would be so negligable that I suppose I wouldn't mind taking a chance on him as well but Al mind be sick of signing potential suspension guys ala Dominic Rhodes and Darrell Russell.

Dude, It is like June 2. Did you expect a 12:01 am waiving of Jordan on 6/1? He'll restructure or be gone, and if he restructures, then it means we aren't that sure of MBush's skills. I'm sure last ditch trade efforts are happening, and we might not want him to end up in DEN if possible. One thing you can say about Jordan is he never quit on us. I never saw him laughing on the bench with Jerry Poser. Don't get me wrong, I think his time has passed, but this is what I think is really going on.

I hear that it might be the same BS as late last year, why we don't cut Jordan. We are afraid of him going to the Broncos. Denver cut Travis Henry today. We may try to trade him for a seventh pick so we can dictate where he goes, the only problem is no team would want to pay his contract, he would have to renegotiate. Personally, I don't know why we are so afraid of Jordan with Denver, he probably wouldn't play more than 5 games anyway. Plus he's not that good!

We really do need to sign Aso and DMC first! An extension for Burgess would be huge, but I don't know how we are going to be able to do it this year.

I think after that Thurman should be considered. The upside outweighs the down side too much to pass up, give it a shot(Colvin's getting ready to be a Colt).

I see Stu signed with the Skins, he should fit in OK there.

I really dont think there is going to be a problem in signing Asomugha or Mcfadden. If there would be a problem it will be with Mcfadden. First lets start with Asomugha. One reason why he wouldnt go is because we got Hall. with the signing of Hall that let us trade Washington and free up one CB. space and also Coach Ryan also mention that it is the be CB. tandem in the league, who would want to lose that oppurtunity. now for Mcfadden I think it will be soon he gets a deal. Lamont (thank God) is gone. The Raider will need to cut one more player. Janokowski is terrible pick to cut. I believe it will be on the defense. Culpepper is not coming back. we have Tuiososopo now, but I think culpepper would been a better choice. Booger Mcfarland odell thurman wouldnt happen either, for the fact they would cost more money then the Raiders have. I would love to see us get Talor for a year. that is wishful thinking,

Some one said Rod Coleman, I think that would be a great pick up to back up Kelly. Mabey even start if Kelly's knee is not ready at the season opener. Macfarland is ok but can he play our D. He has been a cover 2 guy his whole career. Thurman would also be a good pick up so would Colvin (you can never have to many backers). Colvin did nothing in NE's 3-4 but he played great in the Bears 4-3.

Rob, Patrick are you guys going to be covering the Raiders youth football camp? I've been going for 6 years now and hope to see both or one of you guys there. 7/7 to 7/8 at the Alameda facility.

I agree with Jordan being cut but Sam Williams and C-Bass no way. Those are quality players especially janikowski hes got one of the strongest legs in the league. And Terdell Sands is a good plug to the d line. He will get better next year. We dont need new players we just need to get to work. Playoffs next year baby.

I'm shocked as well that he is still on the roster. I though he would be gone. I'm looking forward to hearing that Darren McFadden is signed long before this month is over and that both Derrick Burgess & Nnamdi Asomugha both are signed to long term deals. I think the team needs to also sign Odell Thurman. He is a low risk high reward guy and he could be the missing SLB for the defense.

I've been a Raider fan over 40 yrs.,so you know I've been through all the good and the bad. I'm glad we passed on Dorsey, don't like the fact that he ended up in Kansas Shitty. But,it was him or DMAC and I would rather run DMAC all over Dorsey and K.C.. Than K.C. run DMAC all over us. Think about it;it's a very easy choice when you think about it ,like that. As far as Jordan: he has never panned out and has always gotten hurt. Fargus is like that except that he comes to play and is a pretty good back. But,he also has that

injury problem, never has finished a season. I see

Dungver cut Henry, maybe we could trase Jordan to them. They would be looking for another back,by mid season. I hope for the best every year, but this year I see us on the move. I see DMAC and Bush starting

by the 3rd week,at the very most. We pound Bush at them and then blow by them with DMAC. Maybe DMAC will throw a few TD passes to boot. Looks like good times are ahead for the Raider Nation. I see at least 8 wins,I'm hoping for 12 or 13. I'm out of here.

Lamont at FB? NOT!

He can't block, and you want to move him to a position where that is the most important quality?

I just don't think his back is going to hold up for him, wherever he goes.

I would prefer signing Nmandi over Burgess... a good cover corner is harder to find than a good DE... so i think Dmac and Asomugha are priority, but then we might have to restructure Kirk Morrison's and Thomas Howard's contracts... They're one of the best LB tandems in the league and their gonna wanna be paid like it... then after all that maybe we can give Burgess more money...

GO RAIDERS!!!

The Raiders don't especially feel the need to do him a favor by cutting him early, just to give him th best chance to sign with another team, as they did for Rhodes, who never got much of a chance to play.

The Raiders are still hoping to get something for him in a trade, and the later they wait, the more backs on other teams will go down to injury, holdouts, suspensions, etc.

If they can't trade him they'll cut him. They won't pay a benchwarmer that kind of contract.

Perhaps this is why the Raiders are close to signing McFadden so early. You want to sign him first, then cut Jordan.
