Oakland Raiders-San Francisco 49ers 'rivalry' one for the fans

The Raider Nation has a passionate hatred for the San Francisco 49ers, and the feeling is mutual from Niner fans. The two fan bases have a strong mutual revulsion to one another, but it is impossible to consider it a rivalry between two teams who have only played 11 meaningful games in 48 years.

To Raider fans, the 49er fans are a bunch of red and gold wearing pansies who sip their expensive wines with brie and golf clap every time something good happens for the Niners at "Windlestick." They are the ones that will turn to a seat mate at the two minute warning and ask, "pardon me, would you have any grey poupon?"

To Niner fans, the Raider Nation is a bunch of crazy thugs that would just as soon kill you as look at you, or at least are wanna-bes to that role. In fact in the mind of Niner fans, the only Raider fans on the west side of the bay are in residence at San Quentin, and the rest of of the Nation is on parole, or trying to be rappers.

Other than the fan dislike, there have been skirmishes between the two teams over the years, such as the Niners trying to force the Raiders from Oakland as part of the merger or trying to get Al Davis to pay a fee for sharing turf upon the Raiders return. Then there has been Davis going out of his way to sign former Niners who still had some tread as a way to extend his middle finger at the west side of the bay. In fact, a feud between Davis and former Niner GM Carmen Policy led to the cancellation of the preseason Raider-Niner tilt for a number of years.

Despite all of this, the Raiders and Niners have only met eleven times in games that mean anything in the standings with the Raiders leading the series 6-5. If it wasn't for the geographical proximity of the two franchises and the fact that one could literally swim from the Oakland Coliseum to Candlestick Park, these teams would have no relationship, let alone any talk of rivalry. They are not in the same division or even conference. There has never been a high stakes game played between the two teams as they have never met in the post-season.

Former Raider Charles Woodson once said that playing the 49ers was no big deal because it was not like they were in the division, what was he going to do drive across the Bay Bridge with his finger in the air saying he was number one?

Under the current schedule rotation of the NFL, the Niners and Raiders meet in a game that counts once every four years. They are not scheduled to meet again in a meaningful game until 2010, unless they happen to meet in the Super Bowl. That is not the stuff of an epic rivalry.

The Raiders and Niners do meet before every season in an exhibition game. Some fans take this as a game for bragging rights, but how much does it really matter when the majority of the guys playing the second half of the game will be in either the CFL or Arena League less than a month later?

Regardless of the lack of on the field rivalry, the fans dislike is of each other is passionate. RaiderHed, a Raider fan band, has a song "I hate the 49ers" which gets any Raider crowd going. Niner fans return that passionate dislike in their own way.

Since the Raiders and Niners don't play often, maybe the two fan bases could come together in the spirit of NorCal Love. No way, there is a better chance of John McCain and Barrack Obama announcing a joint ticket than a truce between the Raider Nation and the Niner Fans, and that is how it should be. The Niners will have to come east for the 2008 preseason opener in Oakland, and the Nation will let them have it!

49 fans are actually among the worst fans of any sport anywhere. Talk to them for 5 minutes and all you will hear is Steve Young this and Joe Montana that and just how great the 80s were. They seriously have about 7 seasons to be proud of and nothing before or after. The NFL to a 49ers fan began in 1980 and ended in 1994.

I’ve been to many Raiders-Niners matchups. They are more fun when something is at stake. The one thing that really disappointed me about the Raiders schedule this year is that they’ll face the Niners in the first preseason game, rather than the third where most of the starters will play at least a half.

Living in the Bay Area, it’s remarkable how silent the fans of the city by the Bay get after week 5 if the Raiders are winning. Here’s to being able to hear a pin drop all season long.

========================================

What are you babbling about again, Bobbo?

Here's a question for you...how do YOU measure "how silent fans of the city of the bay get"?? Do you mingle at bars, evesdropping? Scanning feedback sections of papers? Online forums? What? lol...

What you mean to say is what's amazing is how QUICKLY Raider fans bail. No, that's not smack. that's a fact. By week or two or three, in droves, Raider fans go from sprouting off visions of accolades to crying the blues.

BTW..I thought you mentioned what you posted wasn't a lop sided make no sense opinion?

So much for that rule.

Raise your hand and ask to speak before just blurting out stupid crappola.

You're of the "Post a message..one minute later..you think of another SENTENCE...post that seperately...one minute later..another SENTENCE pops in your head..and yes, like a baffoon, you then post that."

What's sad is all three sentences prove you to be....uh...."challenged"..yeah..that's it.

now shut up before you hurt yourself...again.

Mike49er! Hey! Patrick and I were just wondering when you get in on this one!

First off - I wasn't speaking about comments on MVN or articles on other sites when I was talking about writing with objectivity.

Secondly - The silence that I hear are on the call-in radio shows, people that I know who run smack all year long like yourself and the basic postings like yours. Now Mike, I want you to know that you are always welcome here, even when you're depressed about the losing.

Great to have you back MikeR8R Oops! I mean 49er. :-)

The NFL could actually do this.

A small change in scheduling could have the Raiders playing the Whinners every year.

In the SEC they have West and East divisions. Each team plays one team from the other division every year on a home and home basis. It's called a Rivalry Game. The other teams in the opposite division are then played on a rotating basis.

Alabama plays Tennessee every year, Auburn plays Georgia, etc.

Just substitute one of the conference games with the Rivalry Game and the Raiders can play the Whinners. Jets play the Giants. Tampa-Miami. The Chefs could play the Cowgirls each year since they both started in Dallas. The Chefs moved to KC and the Cowgirls moved to Irving.

You're incapable of discussing football for 5 minutes. You tried that once..remember? You waved that white flag, pleading "NO MAS" while running back to the shallow end of the pool.

Let me state it again..anytime you grow a pair and wish to discuss the Niners OR the Raiders, actually say something besides that stupid whine..and then I'll school you....again.

You mention when the Niners started and ended? All I know is SINCE THE RAIDERS LAST TASTE OF SUPER BOWL VICTORY, the Niners have won FOUR.

You understand that, moron? Don't run that idiot "Niners haven't won since '94" because obviously my reply is RAIDERS HAVEN'T WON IN OVER A QUARTER OF A CENTURY.

Let's put it this way, if your kid was born the last time the Raiders won, he would HAVE GRADUATED COLLEGE by now, have gotten married, and had a 3 year old.

Now, exactly how stupid do you feel for setting yourself up like that?

The thread was getting blase'...figured I'd "liven" it up a bit. :)

Call in shows? What, exactly, would those be?

Tkt 1050, before KNBR bought it, was actually the only decent call in show for the afternoon, even when JT the Brick and Rod Brooks were on..Raiders and Niner fans alike called in (still recall JT begging for Raider fans to show up for the games ;) ) but now?

The Razor and Mr. T???? Is there ANY show on the planet more grating on the nerves than those two morons?

The babble for an hour...laugh at each others stupid comments....actually believe anyone cares about their Disneyland trip...then takes about one call an hour.

Well...I guess that one call wasn't a Niner fan? lol...

Maybe you missed the segment they called???

Bay area is seriously lacking a quality sports program...damn KNBR.

Now, back to the point at hand, yes, the NFL should take their collective heads out of their arses and realize local rivalries are good for the league.

Few years ago it was tossed out, and was basically shot down because the comment was made that wouldn't be fair to the rest of the division if a team...oh...let's use the bay area for an example...It wouldn't be fair to Rams, Seattle, and Cards that the Niners get a marshmallow sure win game every year, just because we're a driver and a wedge shot away from Oakland.

While they would be right, it still would be fun.

But, unfortunately, it makes sense..and one thing the NFL is short on is common sense.

That old boy network resists change until they have no choice..and the high ratings the NFL gets, and the sell outs that "almost ;) ) every team gets means they aren't worried about promoting their product.

Aren't you guys glad you dodged that bullet? Losing to the Niners...EVERY year??

Their would be a waiting list for those Sunset Jumps from the Bay Bridge.

I like what H has in mind. I wish we played the niners more often so I could build the hatred that is expected for a Raider fan to have. I don't live in Cali. I live in southern AZ. The geographical rival to the Raiders down here is Dallas(for some reason) and we play them as often as the niners, so not many head to head matchups.

My main hate lies with western division rivals then everyone else in the AFC. But I would love to have that equal hate for the 9ers, so I would love it if H's plan would be implimented. Baseball does it with interleague, why cant football? Each team gets a rival game, like college. That would be awesome. I realize that some teams do not have a natural rival, but it would only take a couple years to create them. Plus we would have all the division games too!

Hahaha mikewhiner is talking all this crap in a Raiders blog... You and your squad are a bunch of shit talking non football knowing bitches... I havent seen any of your stupid posts around lately what, i was wondering what happen why you werent leaving comments i thought we might of scared you away but then it hit me you simply ran out of lotion. And while your waiting for a new bottle of you decided to go see what the Raider fans are doing... dude u come in here and leave more comments then Raiders fan do... You seem like one of them frustrated kids that were punked in school and they would take your lunch... so you decided if you cant be tough in person then you'll try and do it online... But changing the topic to something other than this bitch... i would have to disagree considering the 49'whiners and Raiders a rivalry come on lets be serious ive seen a few high school teams that can beat the whiners... We have 30 other teams to worry about befor we get to even thinking about those bitches... they have nothing to build around other than Patrick Willis... No QB no o-line no WR... on defense they have a crappy d-line and they over paid an over hyped d-linemen whose never had more than 8 sacks in a season... they're linebacking core is good because of Willis... and lets not forget about they're crappy over paid CB in Nate Clements... yet whiners fans still talk shit like their good at something like i previously said BUNCH OF PUSSYS... Mike'fortywhiner im gonna say this once and only once FUCK YOU, YOUR CRAPPY OVERPAID TEAM, AND ONE MORE TIME FUCK YOU... Do u see how many comments you leave here... The whiners are truly the worst team in the league... and they have a MUCH EASIER DIVISION THAN WE DO OBVIUSLY...

"It wouldn’t be fair to Rams, Seattle, and Cards that the Niners get a marshmallow sure win game every year, just because we’re a driver and a wedge shot away from Oakland".

whats really not fair to the rest of the teams in the league is that your team gets to play sorry ass teams like the seahawks, cardinals, and rams each twice a year. it's funny seeing the niners struggle against the cardinals probably the worst team ever.

Mke49er: You know, Patty, what's "OBVIUS" is you have a knack of making yourself to be the simpleton.

I mean, you even confuse yourself.

Patricia: "im gonna say this once and only once FUCK YOU,"

Now, what's rather humorous is you immediately follow that with "AND ONE MORE TIME FUCK YOU…"

What part of "only going to say this once" confused you? I mean...YOU SAID IT....and yet, you still couldn't follow the dots.

*sigh*...I guess you need to go back to square one...

We swept the Cardinals last year, Doofus.

So, how does it feel having the Cardinals beat the Raiders in two accounts....in fan attendance at games...and in their won/loss the last five years??

Oh..that's right...EVERYONE beat the Raiders in fan attendence AND in wins last five years.

As far as SB's and history?? You won't fnd a single comment from me regardng HISTORY that wasn't in reply to some nitwit running the "Raider history" take or the "you were only good during these years"...

"Since the Raiders last won the SB, we've won 4."

And before those 4, we won 3. Since those 4 you haven't sniffed the Super Bowl and we've been in it.

Who cares? Your team sucks. Your #1 QB got beat out by a world leaguer. Your best WR is 50. Your RB is just waiting to blow out his knee again and your defense consists of 1 good LB and a bunch of practice squadders. You will finish on the bottom of the worst division in football.

That's FOREVER. No one, as in NO ONE will ever be as stupid as your team, your coach, and your owner was for that horrible bitchslapping that the Raiders got that day.

That sent you into the abyss, and you've NEVER recovered.

BTW...YOUR #1 qb looked like total crap last year, and your lameduck HC stated he doesn't think too well on his feet....YOUR best WR got traded away for a 4th round pick, who's now #4 on the depth charts...and you stupidly bring up RB's being injured? Is there ANY RB on the Raiders who doesn't get hurt when the wind changes direction??

Lastly, moron, you state YOU WILL FINISH at the bottom...but in your case YOU HAVE BEEN FINISHING AT THE BOTTOM FOR THE LAST HALF DECADE...I. E. You suck..much like your weakass post.

Yeah...CONGRATS on those 3 SB's...

Like I stated already...had you been born when the Raiders last won, you would have graduated high school, AND MED SCHOOL since then.....yep, lol....ONE LONG ASS TIME AGO.

But hey, if not for ancient history, Raider fans would have nothing to dwell on...now..would you?

Where do you get your stuff...the last time I checked the last game of the year was really the only true test for Jammy and he threw for about 250 and 2TD's against the Chargers who were playing for homefield. The kid can throw it 80 yards from his knees, can scramble, throws a football like Ryan threw a baseball and has by far more physical tools and confidence than Smith. Lack of confgidence is a QB Killer and Smith committed suicide last year. As far as Gore goes, he might be overall better than our three, however combined our tandem will do more damage. Try stopping Michael Bush in the 4th Quarter when he has only carried the ball 5 times because Fargas hit you in the first and 3rd Quarters and Mcfadden sped past you in the Second. Seriously the Raiders are not the greatest I know, but you are a fool if you think they have less potential, talent than the niners. Take away the team names and look at the roster its sickening. You guys arent even close. I would say you might be looking at the 4th pick in the draft next year and we will be drafting around 17 or 18.

was alex smith the overall best qb to be offered the year he was drafted. if thats right then you don't have to draft him the niners could have picked up a vet and waited till the next year to draft a qb. just because something is on sale doesn't mean you have to buy it. now their franchise qb might be a second stringer. ah yes to have all that money going towards keeping the bench warm. now that's priceless

hey raider nation wasn't it jerry rice who broke jim browns record against you hasbeens ? the broncos will run down the raiders along with lt and the chargers and kansas city will dominate you like they have over the years. who's your quarterback ? I still like lamont jordan dropping that pass that was backwards and melvin oliver scooped it up for a touchdown !!!!!! I'm surprised the qbs for the raiders haven't got killed and by the way wasn't it marcus allen who got screwed by al davis and kc picked him up and he never lost to his former team again.

speaking of pathetic wasn't it marc bulger who won his first game after the rams were 0-4 ? you talk about the 49ers and their division I believe the seahawks will sink without shaun alexander.the rams will regret not signing issac bruce and the cardinals will find a way to lose football game. talk to me when ur team gets in the playoffs which won't be for a long time.

jeff do you know what the hell you're talking about. has beens your team is full of never was'. k.c. and denver didn't dominate us we split the season with both those and when they did beat us it was for a combined total of 5 points. and wjo the hell is your qb going to be either the proven bust or the euro leaguer. and believe whichever of your loser qb's you put on the field is going to be on his back more than your mom during working hours, because chris long is in your division now . your qb might as well take his snaps on his back to avoid getting slammed on it. i'm sure the seahawks will really miss shaun alexander since he wasn't playing half the time. maybe the niners should sign him since they're looking add age to their roster. isaac bruce, larry allen and alexander. that would make niners age average like 40, 45. don't talk about us looking stupid you're clearly doing enough of that on your own.

yes, the yum is good!

it's odd though since I was born in Oakland, reside in the East Bay... love the A's and Warriors... yet I am a Niners fan...

well, the Raiders were in LA when I watched football and Steve Young at the time was the man!!!

I hate you Pat! You have pulled the last string! Us at Mining the Gold RUsh (or me only to be exact) will throw sourdough at you and give you a cable car ride!!!

Hahaha, realistically, I think to a point you are right. There isn't a rivalry yet. There have not been any important games between the two. It's like baseball's Giants and A's... they have only met once when something was on the line... and even at that it wasn't even a contest.

I don't hate Raiders fans because well, I have no reason to. I hate the teams in my division in the NFC West. But the Raiders? Not a problem of the Niners really.

We can get along, no? You and I work together from time to time and Rob has helped me a lot on my site look... we can make it work!
