Draft Day 2 Live Blog: Raiders select Trevor Scott, DE Buffalo
The Oakland Raiders waited until the sixth round, but they finally addressed their need at defensive end by selecting Trevor Scott from Buffalo. He likely won't be an instant contributer, but could be a solid pickup for some depth along the defensive line.
From the CBS Sportsline profile:
Trevor Scott failed to find his spot on offense at Buffalo and shifted to the defensive line by head coach Turner Gill as a junior. The move was made to help a depleted front wall, but not even the coaching staff expected the instant results Scott produced.Scott led the team in both quarterback sacks and tackles behind the line of scrimmage in both his junior and senior campaigns. Despite playing just two seasons on defense, he ranks third in school history with 19 sacks.
He could be another surprise like Jay Richardson last year. By leading his team in tackles behind the line of scrimmage, he has shown that he CAN tackle.

Where is the DT? The OLB? First Mcfadden and now we get a CB when we were already stacked with Hall, Routt, Asomaghu, Starks etc. I am so confused! Al Davis has once again proven to us and the rest of the NFL that he runs the show in Oakland.

Considering that there were only three Defensive Ends on the roster before this pick, can't complain about this position being picked.

I like this kid he will be good
I'm ok now with the DMC pick and i can take the WR
My biggest problem is the CB...he will be KR\PR and spec teamer and CB\S reserve-->Ok but there were some good DTs in the 4 behind him...i would be happier with Red Bryant or Dre Moore

Branch will a very good player. With Mcfadden we have a chance to stay on the field. U all seem to forget how bad our offense was. Stay on field longer give's the defense a chance to compete, an not be run ragged, because the offense can't get more then 15 yards. Oh an stuart has got to go.

Round 4, Pick 26 (125) (From Jaguars through Ravens) Arman Shields WR 6'1" 194 Richmond
Pick Analysis: Shields did not have as good a senior year as he did as a junior, but he's still tall and he's fast. He ran a 4.37 40 and also had impressive cone drill numbers. He's a guy who can amass yards after the catch and make plays.
http://video.google.com/videosearch?hl=en&q=%22Arman%20Shields%22%20%20&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wv
Standout lower level prospect who was invited to the NFL Combine despite missing all but the first game of the 2007 season due to a knee injury. Shields will have to prove his knee has healed to have any shot at getting drafted, of course, but when healthy he has shown the combination of size, strength, burst, straight-line speed and reliable hands to surprise at the next level - just as the last Spider to earn an invitation to the Combine (veteran linebacker Shawn Barber) has.
Round 6, Pick 3 (169) Trevor Scott DE 6'5" 256 Buffalo
Pick Analysis: Scott is a tall defensive end, with speed. He has great workout numbers, but his production on the field was somewhat lacking. He needs to demonstrate on the field the talent that his workout numbers indicate he could be capable of.
He played TE until just before his junior year and then made the shift to end where he flourished. 45 tackles and 9 sacks as a junior, despite never having played DE previously, 46 tackles, 15 TFL and 10 sacks this past year. His pro numbers:
40 Yrd Dash: 4.54
20 Yrd Dash: 2.59
10 Yrd Dash: 1.53
225 Lb. Bench Reps: 32
Vertical Jump: 33 1/2
Broad Jump: 09'09"
20 Yrd Shuttle: 4.19
3-Cone Drill: 6.84
Round 7, Pick 19 (226) (From Vikings through Jets) Chaz Schilens WR 6'4" 225 San Diego State
Pick Analysis: Schilens excites people because of his exceptional size and speed. Due to his pure athleticism, he will have a chance to make the roster. He still needs some polish as a receiver.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3w92pPUDL8
J.J. Pesavento, of Next Level Scouting, reports San Diego State WR Chaz Schilens measured a height of 6-foot-3 7/8 and a weight of 208 pounds at his Pro Day. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.34 seconds and 4.39 seconds, the short shuttle in 4.14 seconds and the three-cone drill in 6.82 seconds. He measured a 43-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot-3 broad jump and completed 16 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press.
His season was slowed by a stress fracture in his foot.

Thats the problem we gotta HOPE that it all works out for the best. We had a guy literally at the tip of our fingers in Glenn Dorsey and passed him, Hell Kelly could've put on some extra pounds and played the nose guard and Dorsey the 3 technique and we could've kept Warren and Joseph as our back ups. I dont have any faith in Kelly this season coming off an ACL injury. Also i feel like it was a slap in the face to Justin Fargas, Michael bush, and Dominic Rhodes to take another RB in the 1st round. But then we pick a CB when we had the chance to pick Red Bryant to help us against the run, but no Al preffered taking an unnesacary CB which was probably the last of our need. We took one player to take care of our needs and that was Trevor Scott. Extremly dissappointing draft!

I am not overly pleased with the draft. I'll have a breakdown of the whole thing later tonight.

I cant belive Al took Dmac when Dorsey was right there. No wait i can belive it i just cant understand it my bad. Did he not see what Warren Sapp did for the Bucs when he was still young. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS! We got great DB's this offseason with Gibril Wilson and DeAngelo Hall but what difference does that make if the teams can run all over us again. I dont think Dmac was the guy Lane Kiffin wanted and i definetly know Rob Ryan must be wishing he would've been fired this offseason, Al didnt help Rob what so ever he gave him a DE in the 5th round i think and an unnecassary CB. Ryan has nothing to work with other than Derrick Burgess everyone else is unproven Kelly's coming off a serious ACL injury Sands is fat and out of shape because he dosent care he got paid last off-season Warren is a back-up at best Kalimba Edwards hmmmm... yea inconsitent, Jay Richardson a pretty decent back up, then that leaves up with William Joseph yeah dont expect much from him he's also coming off a serious injury. Oh and now we got Trevor Scott well unless he becomes a superstar our D-line is gonna suck next year.
Look at the best LB's in the NFL what do they have in front of them big space eating DT's, examples Ray Lewis has Haloti Ngata and Kelly Gregg, Antonio Pierce has Barry Coefield and Justin Tuck, Brian Urlacher had Tommy Harris and Tank Johnson. All im saying is that a big space eating DT would complement Kirk Morrison's speed and tackling ability and make him even better. He can run all over the field without having to worry about shedding blockers. Morrison has a chance to be one of the best LB's in the league but he's already undersized so he could use the help. One of Morrison's best plays was against th Chiefs last year when Kolby Smith ran all over us and the game was on the line and they go for it on 4th and inches and Morrison just busts through the middle and makes the tackle in the back field. Ok your probably wondering whats my point, well the point is that he was free he didnt have to fight off blockers he went straight up the middle and the only way he could do that is if the DT's stayed in their gap and took up multiple blockers well thats what we need on every play. I dont see the effort in Terdell Sands anymore because he alreay got paid, and like i said Kelly wont be able to play to his full potential this year. Our DB's are gonna have to cover the receivers for like 5 minutes until Derrick Burgess can fight off the double or triple teams he'll be seeing(lol). Hopefully we can find a good undrafted free agent or something but we shouldnt have to depend on that. Kiffin said they knew that Dmac was gonna be the pick for a few months now, right? Well why didnt we use our 2nd round pick and trade for a space eating DT like Shaun Rogers instead of trading it for DeAngelo Hall, im not saying i dont like us having Nmandi and DeAngelo but im saying if you know your not gonna adress your needs early in the draft then you adress them in free agency. Rogers would've been an upgrade over anything we have on the D-line now...

I think big Al has lost it. how can he let Dorsey slide by and draft a position that they were set at.I only hope coach Kiffin quits or big Al dies.where is the dt or oline help they needed. Please hire more scouts or a draft cordanator because I think we just traded Fabian for nothing and will do the same with Lamont who played well when needed for us

pat. T,
I was really hoping for Dorsey also. Oh well, it's all good.
On another note;
“Achtung” Raider Nation; if this doesn’t apply – stay out or don’t read.
My Brothahs & Sistahs; greetings and a Happy Post-Draft Day to you.
I have but a few questions for you. Consider them rhetorical or not; whatever suits you.
Have the masses often or ever mocked Haiti; the most undeveloped country in all the Americas?
Now how many tyrants, dictators, and players-haters are standing in line at this very hour, with ticket in-hand, just salivating at the opportunity to bring down the O.G. Red, White, & Blue?
In High School, College, Hollywood, or on the job, which female gets gossiped about the most; the beautiful, rich, or talented young lady – or the less desirable and low self-esteemed lass?
By now, you’re probably tracking with me.
Our team is rich in not only a history of winning with extraordinary Hall of Famers; but despite the contrary, players with exceptional skills have always gravitated to our roster to this day (and we’re despised for it). What’s more, the prognosticators are going to stomp their feet in denial; but there’s no doubt that they see the potential for this team to be great AGAIN. Let me regurgitate that one-mo-gin; great AGAIN and soon. For the non-Raiders who are going to ridicule my slang/Ebonics; I told yo’ A@@ in the title: “STAAAAAY OUUUUT.” Moving right along……
When it became known that the Messiah to the world would be an infant, what happened? All babies, were ordered to be executed. The threat was to be nipped in the bud immediately. What do you think the haters are doing with visions of the Silver & Black dancing in their heads? Oh; and they can’t stand overly impassioned fanatics (they absolutely loathe us and call us that played-out word; what is it? Oh yeah; “Obnoxious”) – the ones who stay in the stadiums ‘til the very end, despite a really good possibility that our team will not comeback and win. This undying loyalty utterly irks and singes their very core.
So whether you are in a home stadium or an away stadium such as I (M & T Bank Stadium, Baltimore; I can’t wait ‘til October 26th), remember this piece and give ‘em a Snoop D.O. Double G (“It’s All Good, Fo’ Shizzle”). Because they are going to hate regardless. I mean the Patriots went 16 and 0; you hear me? And hands-down, at 4-12, we still get more hate mail than them, Howard Stern, The Commander-in-Chief, and Rosie O’Donnell combined. 'Don't believe it? O.K. Who's talking 'bout the Chiefs, Falcons, and the Rams? What hate are they getting with equal or less records? The word Raiders is saturated in an endless trail of negative headlines and countless blogs.
Let ‘em look and Let ‘em talk. If the woman on your arm is a 5, people will totally ignore the both of you. Flip-the-script. Should she be an 8+, people will definitely gawk. I place our team in the latter category. We must be quite a spectacle; that they have the time and energy to formulate one negative word or type one negative keystroke against the Silver & Black. Besides, most of them are “Puppet Masters” anyway; they puke-up the same ‘ole tired line, “Al Davis is senile.” Please… Do me a favor and tossed those lames a baby bib, as they drool and babble incoherently.
Let ‘em freakin’ look. Let ‘em freakin talk. LMFAO. ‘Nuff said, I’m Audi. Peace!!

Al brought us championships in the past. I think Dosey was the best player available in the draft and he would fill our most pressing need but we passed on him. I hope Al proves to me that he made the right decision but right now I feel like we may never get to the playoffs w/ him running the show. Of course I am loyal and I know everyone else is but it's a tough pill to swallow

No doubt. Dorsey was the pick. Though I had butterflies in my stomach and hope in my heart for Dorsey up until the very moment, my conscience was saying that they're going DMC all the way.
Sometimes things seem bleaker than they really are. It is my opinion that this is what's happening with many in the 'Nation. At the moment some of us have a touch of Schleprock-itus.
But I won't fret; the sun eventually shines on time.

I was a Raider fan on Friday and I'll be a Raider fan on Monday. As a life long fan I expect the Raiders to win most of their games. We have had very few losing seasons until lately. What is going on with our team? Is it Coaching, Players, Drafting, or Al? I will not say Al needs to go. He has done to much for the Raiders and to much for the NFL. But this draft is one of the lowest times to be a Raider fan. Who was running this draft? Why could'nt we trade our #4 overall and one or more of our unwanted players to the Rams for thier #2 overall? They would of still got Dorsey and we would of got the guy we wanted and needed. Or why did we not take Dorsey with our #4 over all? Why did we trade up for a CB/KR/S ? I don't care how many positions the guy can play or if he's going to clean the toilets too. We could of taken any one of the few good DTs on the board. Someone said Red Bryant, he would of been a stud for us. What about Carl Nicks in the 6th, a hugh OT? I'm at a loss to explain or know whats happening to the greatest team in the NFL. Remember when just a few years ago the Raiders had the best win percentage in the NFL?

Dorsey lovers should relax! There will be linemen in the future for the Raiders. There was no combo of picks in this draft that were going to fix our team in 2008 even if we had 12 picks. It's just not possible, teams generally hit on maybe one or two picks per draft.
Remember after Gannon's first year when our offense really started to excite, we traded for Lincoln Kennedy, drafted Langston Walker, and all of the sudden we went from a questionable line to one of the best Offensive lines in the league...in one offseason.
In the coming year or two I'm confident we will address our lines through FA and draft. What is great is that, now, our team should be exciting to watch offensively for the first time since 2001!!!
The offense was somewhat exciting last season with Fargas running, imagine how it will be with McFadden.
And defensively..... we're beyond solid at linebacker, Safeties and Corners in addition to our Pro Bowl Defensive end. Yes we are thin at tackle, yes we need a Nose Tackle. We will get one, but in the meantime...
JaMarcus is going to need a year or two to develop, DMC and Bush will be finding their groove over the same time. Miller will be priming in his third year also. The future looks bright if JM and DMC develop and produce as hoped.

Fresh brings up a good point. Did any of us expect the Raiders to go to the Superbowl this year? I just got my hopes to high after all the free agent spending and the predraft trades. Here is the one thing that worries me. Can we keep our roster intact for two or three years? Do we have the cap room to do so? I'm sure someone knows where we are at with the cap and all and who is going to be hitting free agency next year.

Ditto, Fresh;
I would have sure liked Run-Stuffing-Dorsy though.
On a more positive note; after slinging and hurling the ball down field a few times, teams will have learned ya just don't do this on the '08 Raiders defense.
A pick here, a pick there; they'll learn to keep it on the ground. Now hopefully Kelly & the bunch have stacked-up on loads of "Tacklin' Fuel" for this season.
Go Yaiiiddahhhssss!!!!

Look im happy with Dmac on our squad, but how does Al not adress the D-line. I can at least understand why he didnt do anything for the O-line maybe they know something we dont maybe Mario Henderson will turn out to be pretty good. But we have nothing for the D-line he left us with the same we had last year other than the fact Sapp retired. Al will be calling Sapp begging him to come back lol! The only Temporary solution i can think of is try and sign Anthony "Booger" McFarland for a veteran minimum but he's injury prone, still should some what help us with some veteran ledership if nothing else.
And im not to worried about our O-line because like Rolni said i think Cable might know what he's gonna do with them. Plus it will help alot that for the 1st time in a long time the O-line will probably have the same guys as last year. I can see Kwame Harris starting at left tackle, Robert Gallery left guard, John Wade center, Cooper Carslile right guard, Paul Mquistan or Cornell Green at right tackle. and you never know maybe Mario Henderson will steal one of their positions at tackle. But i see Henderson as more like a project maybe next year because i think he was only a one year starter in college he needs to get stronger before they throw him out there with the big dogs. Our D-line on the other hand im worried about we'll have to wait and see but i say give McFarland a phone call at least.
Hey Rob offcourse Chris Long and Dmac are gonna say their happy about being on their squads their getting paid $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Who wouldnt be happy receiving a FAT paycheck from Al. Dont be fooled he would've said the same if the Jets wouldve taken him. But i dont think Chris wanted to be a Raider and i also dont think Howie wanted him to come to us. I honestly wouldve preffered to have seen Glenn Dorsey in a Raiders uniform i think he wouldve been a better fit, plus Dmac's mom didnt hi want him to come to Cali she wanted him in Dallas but whatever. Well the Raider Nation gotta hope for some miracle for us to be able to stop the run this season. I dont understand why the hell Al would trade up in the 4th round to get a CB a fucking CB were stacked at that position. Maybe he can be a beast a KR and PR.
GO RAIDERS!!!

Jared Allen was a TE turned DE. Now I am getting stars on my eyes.
