Paired together, they probably form a great tandem that will shut down receivers for years to come.
However, if as a result of this, Nnamdi walks next offseason, the Raiders will have just made the single most critical mistake of the 2007 offseason. I was a quiet supporter of their moves prior to this one but there is no justification for taking a vastly inferior corner, and paying him more than you would have to keep the much better incumbent around.
If they can get Nnamdi to re-sign, you've spent a lot of money at one position, but at the very least the Raiders will actually be achieving for what the Broncos went for last year--a pair of over talented corners.
Something smells fishy about this move. The Raiders didn't just decide to give up on BOTH Stanford Routt and Fabian Washington, it seems like they are planning for Nnamdi to walk and if that happens, the Raiders have really crippled their defense in doing so.
Don't like this one at all.

They say winning starts with running the ball and being able to stop the run. So far our FA pick ups have focused on passing and stopping the pass. I dont like this move!

Hall is better player than any player we would have picked up in the 2nd round.
We need one or two more tweaks and we'll have a much improved complete team.
I don't know what the end result will be in terms of Aso but that remains to be seen. Don't forget also that Hall returns kicks, a need that needed filling. Teams will have a hard time throwing against us and with some minor tweaks, running against us. Don't forget also that that our D shut down LT at the end of the season. I think this DL needs a bit more time to develop. Kelly will be an upgrade to Sapp over the long haul and perhaps Sands just needs a bit more time. I'm sure these things will be addressed in the draft.
We can also trade Washington, Rhodes & Jordan for more picks to fill the remaining holes.
Ultimately, it's nice to see a complete makeover. I see good things coming from these moves next year.
Go Raiders!!!

I will be absolutley gutted if they don't keep Aso. Man I hope he trade LJ and Washington to the Cowboys for a 1st rounder now

You guys need to calm down with the whole RUN DEFENSE. This could potentially be very beneficial. we now have Routt/Washington/Jordan to trade for RUN STUFFIN DT's ever think about it that way? Al Davis is not stupid, Al Davis is getting OLD, he wants to win now. Goin back to him not being stupid, you think he's blind??? Everyone and their mom knows we had a shitty DT line against the run. IT WILL BE ADDRESSED. Asomugha will be resigned. Calm down!!!

for all u haters....
1. we got Fargas, Rhodes, and Bush to run the ball
2. Our O-line has improved immensely after one year, imagine next season!
3. There's not any studs in the D-Line Market
4. We picked up some needed recievers for J-Russ
5. We filled in both needs with Hall and Gibson; we always gave up the lead in the 4th Quarter due to lack of talent in those positions-not anymore! Now we have a truly scary defensive secondary.
6. We'll improve the D-line with the Draft or trade the pick to the Jets or Cowboys for the McFadden sweepstakes.
7. We still have Jordan and either Washington or Routt to trade for players or draft picks
8. There's still playmakers at WR to be brought in (i.e. Hackett, Jackson)

I HATE this move. We were already spending too much money and now we are spending a lot more on a position we have good players in. Yet again, the best players on the Raiders team are Nnamdi and Burgess and they are probably wondering what the hell is going on. They deserve extensions more than anyone and they are being frozen out. And now we don't have a 2nd round pick either. I realize that we will be looking to move Fabian, Rhodes, and Jordan to move back into the 2nd round but it will be a much lower pick in that round and we will be no better off otherwise. Initially, when I saw that Hall was being traded to the Raiders I was a little excited but that was because I thought it would be for one of the those players and perhaps a low round pick. This cost them nearly a 1st rounder (pick 34) and a hell of a lot of money that needed to be spent elsewhere. What a let down. No doubt in my mind AD will be looking to move down in the first round because he won't have the cap money to pay the #4 pick and we need 2 more players in the first 2 rounds to make up for this. DE, OT, and WR are still big needs. Along with perhaps DT and SLB.

Bet who is Gibson? The Raiders cut a 1st round bust named Derrick Gibson last year but that is the only one I can think of.

Sorry for all of the posts but I keep thinking of things. Like for instance; supposedly Hall is set to get money close to Asante Samuel numbers. If that is the case then WHY THE HELL DIDN'T WE JUST SIGN SAMUEL and save ourselves a 2nd round pick in the process!

I don't like it. We didn't stop LT at the end of the season. They rested him for the playoffs. He got 200 yards and 4 TDs earlier in the season. I was hoping we would get a top DE with our 1st pick and a top DT with #2. We might as well take McFadden with our 1st pick. He can sit on the bench next to Russell and watch the other teams motor up and down the field with their running game.

"then again can Hall play receiver?"
yes and he has very limitedly, it would probably be a devin hester like situation, incredibly fast corner moved to wideout however it wont happen hall is to good of a corner whereas hester wasnt
also this could help the raiders run d in that now gibril wilson can step up and help stuff the run while our nasty corner tandem can play one on one

Dizzle, well spoken. Not sure why we would eliminate ourselves from the 2nd round, unless Al has something already in the works (like the trades you mentioned, or the Dallas rumor). And I whole heartidly agree that Asomugha and Burgess should have got their pay day first. I will be stunned if one of the corners, Washington or Routt , is not traded. Now I think we have to sign a DE or another OL in the Free Agency. None the less, Al makes the off-season exciting at a minimum.

Loady, actually dizzle doesnt know what he is talking about, as said earlier earlier Hall is better than ANY player in the second round. Also, i agree with matt, everyone is so worried about the run, with Hall and Nnamdi playing man we can stack 8 or 9 in the box and stuff the run. If we can re-sign Nnamdi this will give the raiders the best corners if not secondary in the nfl.

Nmamdis franchise tag costs us 10 million all in cap space this year. I dont htink we can sign deangelo with out giving nmamdi a long term deal. I think we will give asomugha a new contract that is very bonus heavy this year but cap light for this year. We could give him a 15 million dollar signing bonus which doesnt hit the cap and a light first year on his salary

i have 2 say this trade actually really exicites me. Ok now we have Asomughua and Hall and Wilson. So now Wilson can play the eight man in the box and at SLB we have Sam Williams and if anything we can find a replacement in the 4th or 5th round or we could attempt to move D. Burgess at OLB on run downs and back a DE or passing downs. And at the DT position we now have William Joseph i know i know not exactly the best DT but in the NFL its all about depth guys can play better if they can have more plays off. Like we can now rotate T. Sands/T. Kelly/W. Joseph/Gerard Warren and who ever we get in the draft or from free agency after the draft or something like that. Like i said previously we can put T. Kelly at DE and J. Richardson at the other on Running downs and Gerard Warren/William Joseph/Terdell Sands at DT's.Then LB's can be Kirk Morrison in the middle Thomas Howard at weakside LB and Sam Williams/Derrick Burgess on the stong side.

And we should get some value for a guy like D. Rhodes/L. Jordan/F. Washington?S. Routt. At least a 3rd round pick for one of these guys.
People say that our stars needed 2 get paid b4 we did this well i totally agree but i assure u one if not both are willing 2 take pay cuts just to be a contender and be in the playoffs mostly D. Burgess he's not getting any younger. Hell if we make a turn around i bet you Sapp will think about coming back. Im happy with what we've done this off-season. If we can get a guy like Glenn Dorsey or move down and get a guy like Sedrick Ellis at like 8 or 9 that would be great and save us a few millions.

Stretch, I agree with the stacking in the box comment, that has always been a part of our D by locking down the outside and having an instinctive safety (got one now too, G. Wilson). But Dizzle makes since because we now have to pay for Hall, Asomugha, and Washington, which I don't think we can (nor should we) while affording a #4 overall pick as well. I like Hall, do not get me wrong on that, but I believe in aqcuiring and keeping your own guys (the draft), which is why Asomugha should be paid first. If Hall replaced Washington, I could accept it more.
So it would make it more comforting to me if we gave up Washington or Jordan like Dizzle said, rather than giving up a 2nd round pick. But like I said, Al might already have a trick up his sleeve that will make this more comforting. Hall IS better than a second round pick if compared directly to that pick, but not if we have all these corners and still need help at more than one position. Thats how I agree with him.

Patrick,
"And we should get some value for a guy like D. Rhodes/L. Jordan/F. Washington/S. Routt. At least a 3rd round pick for one of these guys. "
This is where I can see logic in the Hall trade as well, so I hope Al does have a trade lined up for one or more of these guys, otherwise I am little iffy on the deal. It has been an exciting off-season, that is for sure.

I believe the Raiders have made great moves this offseason with aquistions that hope to fill holes that have hampered the sucess of the Raiders. Hall happens to be one of them. With Nmandi and Hall covering recievers, Wilson proving aid to them and with Tommy kelly back on the line along with Burgess, the opposing QB will be sacked before he can even find a man open. The draft also seems to favor Gholston coming to on the team forcing even more pressure.

Well, I have to say this is about as plethoric as I ever thought I'd see Mr. Davis be in the FA market; I find myself joining those who surmise that he is going for broke (perhaps literally) before he reaches the great goalpost in the sky.
I do not side with those who believe bringing D-Hall aboard automatically means that the Raiders cannot or will not resign Nnamdi A. Far from it; I believe that Mr. Davis has shades of Haynes-Hayes in this mind with this signing. IMO, #21 will be wearing the Silver and Black for some time to come.
I do believe, however, that Fabian Washington should be anticipating a new address in 2008.
As these rapid-fire FA acquisitions continue to occur, it now seems increasingly likely that the Raiders will either trade down from the #4 spot or select D-Mac, two scenarios that I frankly would not have predicted (nor advised) a week ago.
One thing is for sure: Napa is going to be rocking this summer.

"If that is the case then WHY THE HELL DIDN’T WE JUST SIGN SAMUEL and save ourselves a 2nd round pick in the process!"
Not to put too fine a point on it, but that would have required Samuel to WANT to come to Oakland.
And forgive me for being the pessimist in the group, but this is a terrible sign, in my mind, that something remains rotten in the City of Alameda.
The Raiders are trading high for Hall because Asomugha's agents have made it clear that he'd not interested in a long-term deal and wants to take his talent to a less dysfunctional organization.
It's difficult not to come to this conclusion.

OakFoSho I didn't know AD had a stutter? (SSSSPPPPEEEEDDDD) and speaking of only talking about one player, get off McFaddens dick. Try considering someone else. As I said before you are a "true believer" you like every move this team makes. This is a bad move and picking up McFadden would be equally stupid. Bush is better than McFadden and we already have him for far less money.
Jonnie Queef:
The Raiders are "the best 4-12 team in the NFL"? what does that even mean? Is that supposed to be an endorsement? WTF cares if they were the best of the teams near the bottom! That is what we call an oxymoron.
OttO:
I won't stop holding out hope on getting Chris Long until I see the commissioner at the podium and hear him call his name before the Raiders pick. Until then there is always a chance he will be there. I also already mentioned that Culpepper is 2nd on the Raiders list of backup QBs this season behind Quinn Gray. Although after Gray's workout Culpepper may be the #1 option. Hard to say.
Joe Raider:
The good DT that were out such as Corey Williams were available for a trade and AD should have pulled the trigger on that one. I hope we don't get Carter. He is done. Everywhere he has gone in the past few years, he has been cut shortly thereafter. This team doesn't need any more dead weight.

Samuel is nowhere near as good a man coverage corner DHall is. the Pats make him look much better than he is y do u think they just let him walk? its the system...this move will prove to be better in the long run..given we resign Namdi to a long term deal hopefully this yr so we wont have that 10 mil on the books as well as Burgess to a long term deal...we have made good moves for a young D..the Dline is deep this yr in the draft we'll be ok... GHOLSTON! Silver and Black!

Anthony,
Actually, Nnamdi has said he likes Oakland and wants to stay. Also, for all you Hall detractors, it is even more likely that Nnamdi will sign long term, as it will bring the cap down this season due to Nnamdi's franchise status. I believe this was said above, but I don't feel like rereading all the posts to find out.

OakFoSho --
There are always times when you can be wrong about something, and there are times when you WANT to be wrong. I'd love to be wrong about this -- but until I see Nnamdi signed long-term, then I'm going to continue to look at this trade out of the c orner of my eye.
A more positive spin would have been that this spells the end of Washington in Oakland, and while his trade stock is pretty low, particularly with potential off-field baggage, then the pan could be to lock down Asomugha and Hall long-term, with Routt as the nickel back and Bowie developing behind them. Were this the case, I'd be delighted.
But, still, there's that negative voice in the back of my head that I can't yet ignore . . .

Al is going for STARS, big-play players. We have Russell, adding Hall and McFadden makes the Raiders exciting, helps attract other talent. McFadden working on a linebacker catching passes out of the backfield is a nightmare for defenses. And one way to stop the run is by having two shut-down corners. Gives you another player, sometimes two, up in the box to out-number if not out-man an opponent's rushing game.
#37
Posted by Raider Lifer, March 16, 2008 4:25 AM
Lets not get ahead of ourselves here kiddies.
1. Until Oakland proves they can stop the run, they can't.
2. We essentially have a rookie QB.
3. HUGE questions about the offensive line.
Raiders always have an interesting off-season and they've had high round 1 draft picks 5 straight years. All this has meant 19-61 the last 5 years. Until the Raiders don't suck anymore, they still suck.

O I forgot, The draft is overrated anyway, you can find good to great players in the later rounds. Look across the NFL a lot of the stars where picked after the first day!..And if you haven't notice we are picking up other teams first rounders and people are saying they are average at best!! This is a good trade and Aso will resign. Last thing if you are a 4-12 team why do you need cap space? The money is there spend it.....
#42
Posted by Brian, March 16, 2008 5:48 AM
A couple things, if we make this deal to get Hall - FANTASTIC (we will sign Aso to long term and it will create cap room) giving us the ability to lock down both sides of the field and free up Huff and Wilson to make plays. When teams are in passing situations they won't be able to pick a weak side (as vs. Routt and Wash). Wash will be traded, Jordan and his salary traded or released and our #4 pick will either bring C.Long, Gholston (to bring pressure and force picks) or DMAC to add a playmaker to the O.
Our offense will be ball control RUN HEAVY with the occasional downfield pass, and Russell will have a role similar to Roethlisberger in his first stretch, or Dilfer's go with BAL in 2000. Russell's targets for mid-range are Miller / Curry. He can throw to the backs (Fargas, Rhodes, Bush, DMAC??) in the flat, and now he'll have Javon and Drew downfield. We will run downhill first, pass when available.
Our D is not in the dumps as some would have you think, It was top 5 before last year, the running D looked worse due to giving up big plays and poor tackling. Swapping in Wilson for Stu and Hall for Wash will fix that in the secondary. Huff and Wilson will be able to disguise their coverage due to Aso and Hall's ability at man to man helping the run. Our D forced many 3 and outs last year, but we may have finally seen the last of the 3rd and longs being converted by opponents if we sign Hall.
The funny money Al has been spending has a couple things tied to it. He acquired more shares for the team and sold some off at a huge profit, and the league is potentially headed for an uncapped year 2010 (where our long term deals made now will look cheap in comparison).

Like it! Something about the Superbowl has Al fired up! Shut down corners... Safety help... QB pressure Hmmm looks like a team I saw play in the Superbowl this year. Only problem is we had great pressure on the QB in the late 90's and we still didn't win with it. You have to score! J Rus - you had better be learning what you're doing. No more of this limited playbook... At this point I'll change to Sedrick Ellis as the pick...

I love all the speculation I didn't hear anyone talking Hall before it happened, or for that matter Carter, Joseph, Walker or Wilson.
I do think if the Raiders felt that the D'line was an issue, they have plans to address it.
This has been an entertaining off season, and that is what football is all about..ENTERTAINMENT.
I would love to see Hall in Silver & Black, if only for the one game against the Pats. Seeing Moss go against that secondary. That's entertainment.

signing hall is poor planning if it puts in doubt the team's ability to sign namdi to a long term deal. the primary reason the defense has been poor at stopping the run the past couple of years rests in the front seven, not in the secondary. there's been poor tackling in the secondary as well, but stopping the run is about the play of the front seven. the expensive move to sign hall, who by the way has not exactly proven himself to be a high-character great clubhouse kind of player, does nothing to address the defense's most pressing weakness.
#47
Posted by jc, March 16, 2008 10:30 AM
Warren Sapp was not a good run stopper in his prime. Stuart was not able to support the run at all. With two lock down corners, a real safety in the box and no Sapp means we will stop the run.
Now draft Mcfadden. Fargas can't catch. Richardson will man the other DE spot just fine.

Posted by Mad Road Dog, March 16, 2008 10:54 AM
So far Al does not get it and most of the fans never do get it. Giving all this money to the skill positions and treating the "O" line and "D" like an afterthought is a recipe for disaster. The war is won in the trenches and on both sides of the ball the Raiders are still marginal at best, the "O" line more so. The ZBS improved our run game but did little for our passing game. The ZBS should never be an excuse to bring in lessor talent.

This trade will be a good thing, I truly believe that. Now,can we stop with the all the harping on the DL? We ALL know the problems we had stopping the run. DT/DE is a need, true. But most of the posters here ignored one short post earlier. There were NO stud defensive linemen available in FA.Free Agency was incredibly thin regarding d-linemen this year. The guy from the Packers was the best guy available and GB re-signed him. Followed by Tommy Kelly and we re-signed him but quick. I didn't see any DT or DE on the market worth spending the kind of money it would have meant. Hall is worth what Oakland will be giving.I wouldn't count out Oakland signing Kevin Carter either.

Al is not going to let Aso go anywhere. He wants to get a similar tandem to that of Hayes/Haynes, with that said and Al banking on the 2010 season being uncapped we're going to have us the pleasure of watching two of the best young corners in the League for the next 8 or 9 years, Al will not let Aso go.

LDizzle,
You know very well that I have talked up everyone under the sun that the Raiders could draft. I have settled on the belief that Al will pick McFadden only recently, due to the FA acquisitions at OT, DT, and DE (Carter hopefully early next week). In fact, ONLY with the pickup of Carter will I truly believe that Al will take McFadden, but if Carter is picked up, IT WILL BE! Otherwise, the pick will most likely be Gholston, and I'm fine with that too, but only if Carter is not picked up.
Theres no reason to make accusations or demands based on statements you know to be false.....IE
"speaking of only talking about one player, get off McFaddens dick. Try considering someone else."
I have, plenty, in fact! You see the off season is like a story that plays out over a period of months. It becomes easier to predict as the Story moves along. If you can't see the reality of my logic, fine, but it follows a clear path extending back over the course of several months. In fact for a long time, I was completely against McFadden, but the situation is fluid, variable, and constantly changing, thus so must ones thoughts.
In conclusion, my thoughts have been extreemley wide ranging all off season, and only the last week have I settled on McFadden. Again, I will admit if I am wrong, what I am interested in, is will you?

OakfoSho saying that you just now settled on McFadden as the pick is a complete lie. As I recall, one of the first disagreements we had was about McFadden being the pick. First you were saying that you wanted him to be drafted by the Raiders and now you are trying to twist it by saying that you are only mentioning him because that is who you think AD will pick. You have wanted McFadden all along and now you are projecting those feelings on AD when there is NOTHING in the Raiders offseason moves that suggests we will take him. This is clearly a case of seeing what you want to see. The Raiders have also not filled the DE spot as you may have noticed, or both DT spots, or SLB. And I am not sure that Al or Tom Cable see Kwame Harris as the answer at OT either. So we are pretty much right where we started (with the exception of SS of course). With a boat load of good running backs and needs at DE, DT, OT, SLB, and WR (young talent aside from Walker, Carter and Curry).

LDizzle,
You have a bad memory, as our first debate/disagreement was as a result of you overvaluing the DE position as the 2nd position of great need in your article, "Oakland Raiders Free Agent Wish List-Thoughts from a Reader’s Side". At the time, I believed that OT was the 2nd greatest need to DT, and that WR was the 3rd biggest need. We still had Clemons at this point, and the crux of your argument was that Clemons was not serviceable. We argued about this for about a week, so go back and read the comments before you make assumptions, that are absolutely false. In fact, at the time RB was not even a thought of mine as we had yet to address all the needs that were so obvious.
My wish list at the time was for an OT, DT, WR, THEN DE, SS, and OLB. Again, the off-season has had many twists and turns, and my wish list was steadily filled through FA, thus my opinion of McFadden and the Raiders needs have changed through much debate, thought, and FA action.

Well I've stated on this blog before that I felt that DeAngelo Hall was an overrated, arrogant, brash Deion Sanders wannabe who's talk doesn't nearly back up his performance on the field. He's got a penchant to blow up when he's covering a top flight reciever. Does anyone remember the Steve Smith fiasco? I've seen him get burned one too many times and seeing him in the Silver & Black just irks the hell out of me. Trading for that idiot and granting him an extension isn't quite the impression that I'd want to make on your franchise corner who could walk next season. Well I've had some time to cool down and actually think about this aquisition. The addition of DeAngelo Hall will immediately give the Raiders the best tandem of starting corners in the league. Hall will be excellent starting opposite of Asomugha as Nnamdi's number 2. I really believe that if he's not covering the best reciever on the other team, he will be much more effective. Quarterbacks were scared to death to throw the ball Asomugha's way last year, which should give Hall all the oppertunities in the world to make plays. Inversely, quarterbacks will be weary of throwing Hall's way, so testing Asomugha looks to be much more frequent than it was last season. This could make him happy enough to re-sign with team next season and continue to enjoy a healthy career with Hall as opposite. The only thing that makes me cautious is that Hall will play number two, as we all can agree that Asomugha is clearly the better corner. But the problem is that Hall is a number two WANTING to be paid like a number 1. Let's see how that story progresses.

Does everyone forget that we drafted Michael Bush last year? I see no way that we take McFadden with Fargas playing well and Bush ready to show that he should have been a top five pick in last years draft. And don't forget Rhodes, he looked good at the end of the season. As for the hall move, I am a bit perplexed since teams did not need to throw against us, they just ran it down our throats. We need a stud DT, and the only way we will get one is to stay put at #5 in the draft, or move up. if possible. If we draft a DT with our first round pick, then the hall move makes sense. ---S&B

I like Hall he is a good corner, but i will love this move if we sign him and ASO to long term deals...without Aso it means nothing...if we get\keep both of them than it something HUGE man...Hall-Huff-Wilson-Aso...the best secondary in the league...Our run D hopefully will improve and with a solid run D and this Shutdown secondary we will be scary!!!
Our run game will be great and J-Rock+Miller+Javon+Curry+Carter will give us a good passing game too...so in 2010 we will be around SB again :)

The reason the raiders didnt want Samuel is because he isnt a man 2 man corner Deangelo Hall is..Hall is good enough to shut down the #2 receiver for sure..I wouldnt want Hall for a #1 cause he has problems with some wr..I like this move but im not sure why they wouldnt take Cris Long if he is there...That seems like a slim chance cause of the blood line. Not to worry because we will have 1 of the best D linemen coming out..All we need is for Miami or Atlanta to take the QB and we will be set...D-mac would be nice but we need DL help alot more and our D will be tough if we get a top rookie in that spot..Also i think we will be fine with the 3 RB we have..I would love to see LJ go bye bye...Even for a 4th round pick...A couple of 4th round picks might get us in the 3rd round...

Well we got Hall, it was pretty spendy but that aquistion is going to do wonders for our entire Defense. I'm calling it right now the Raiders will have the top pass defense in the NFL, and top 5 run D in the NFL. Hall will let us stack our safeties in the box and have extra run tackling Heads. If we take a good D linemen in the draft I dont see why we wont have the best D in the NFL. Plus, depending on how Jamarcus does, our Offense could be tough to stop too. Look out Playoffs, cause here we come in 08
WOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Go Raiders

Now that we have Hall and a secondary suited for excelling at man coverage with insane speed, I wonder if we may finally incorporate the 46 defense of ole Rob's dad into our D? Picking C.Long or V.Gholston would add more punch to the rush and we would be able to collapse the pocket quickly. With the speed and talent in the secondary, I would expect a TON of interceptions of balls that HAD to be thrown too early. I would really love to turn the table on the rest of the leagues QBs this year, and show them what our QBs have had to face since the Pirate Bowl.
