Oakland Raiders add Drew Carter to their offseason treasure haul
The Oakland Raiders have come to terms with wide receiver Drew Carter on a one year deal that is believed to be worth $2 million. This addition gives the Raiders another speedy downfield threat to match with JaMarcus Russell's cannon arm. Adding Carter and Javon Walker as deep threats to go with Ronald Curry whose strength is being a move the chains receiver was a desperately needed upgrade.
The Raiders have added a key dimension to their offense that they did not have last year. Speed at the wide out position. Ronald Curry is a move the chains kind of guy at this point in his career. Mike Williams was a disaster and Tim Dwight was a midseason replacement. Now the Raiders have two playmaker type receivers to go with Curry and tight end Zack Miller.
This leaves the left tackle spot as the biggest question mark on the offensive side of the ball. Unless the rumors of JaMarcus Russell's weight nearing 300 lbs are accurate, then he may be moved to tackle. Fortunately, John Clayton has said on record that JaMarcus's weight should not be much of a concern, people tend to forget that he is a "Big Quarterback." Seriously, expecting Kwame Harris or Mario Henderson to step into the left tackle position would be a recipe for concern.
If Jake Long is there and Chris Long is gone, he may be the one the Raiders take at number four. If he is the pick, look for the line to look like J. Long, Gallery, Grove/Newberry, Carlisle, McQuistan/Harris/Green.

Great job by the OAKLAND RAIDERS front office to spend the cash to get Russell some weapons. Not to mention Wilson & Harris love what Davis & Kiffin are doing to bring players and depth to the Organization. Just Win Baby!!

Oak Fool, That's all it was, the late round picks made you open your fat mouth? Well sorry for talking about people who can improve a team at a cheaper price, would not want another Richardson on the team right? Sarcasim if you can't tell. Yes you have lobbied for Gholston, but you have never mentioned one receiver, where as I have listed about ten. Again, tell me something I do not already know.
Here is a thought, WR will not be picked until after round 2. Where you get this me petitioning for a running back idea is craziness. I said it is a moderate need, as we will only have two under contract following the season, and if we win, there will be no McFadden next year, so who knows what Al is thinking. As I sad before, I do not want a RB, I want a OT and DE. Do I care where they are picked? NO, I understand the complexity that is the draft, and will take a Tommy Blake type guy in day 2, because like Clemons last year, he will fill a need.
So here is a thought, I have only came at you in retaliation to your fat mouth, so from now on, you shut it, and I will not even know you exist, which is fine by me. I have only complimented people on this blog, not tried to degrade their comments. Matter of a fact, this whole thing started because you bashed my compliment I gave you, now you see I am not all nice. You and Little Dizzle are my only beef. HAVE I ENGAGED IN ANGER WITH ANYONE BESIDES YOU TWO?
----NOPE
let it die, then there will peace on this blog again. Just don't even touch on my comments(I will do the same). To the rest of the bloggers, I apologize for coming unglued, but I hate people dogging on other peoples post, when it is a game of opinions and suppose to be fun. These two guys only know how to bash, not support. Like Eminem said: "my intentions were good"

Here are some WR's that could be possible in the 4th:
Adarius Bowman, Dexter Jackson, Jerome Simpson, Earl Bennett, and possibly a Jordy Nelson or Devin Thomas.
I know it is the 3rd pick of ours, so unless we pass on the 2 OBVIOUS positions in the 1st and 2nd, one of these guys should still be on the board, especially Jackson.

I throw out 5 guys, cause those who do not know these names are smart enough like me to do their own research and have a comment on if they like a guy or not. So, I do not want them all, but would take anyone of them, just to clear that up first.

HOW ABOUT GIVING KYLE TURLEY A LOOK IN REGARDS TO THE LEFT TACKLE SPOT. I BELIEVE HE IS STILL UNSIGNED. WOULD WEAKEN CHIEFS WHILE BRINGING SOME MUCH NEEDED FIRE TO THE O-LINE

I would only give him a look if he signs for the vet minimum with everything else as incentives. That way if he doesn't have anything left in the tank, he can be cut in camp with no cap loss at all.
I have my doubts that he has anything left.

Didn't Turley decide he was a TE a couple of years back? Coming back after being out of football for a season he thought he was going to be the next Tony Gonzalez. May have been while he was still with the Rams. You have the riht idea Patrick, if he would take the vet minimum, then what the hell. But I wouldn't pay him any more. I think the Carter signing is a good move. A necessary move more importantly. I have seen a couple of posts elsewhere slagging Oakland for this move ( one was a SD fan though) but there is really no downside. He has potential, and we didn't pay much for him as it turned out. So, it is really a no lose situation. People have questioned his signing along with Javon Walker, but what else could we do? Oakland was in dire need of WR's after 2007, and the free agent pool wasn't very strong to begin with at the position. Arguably Walker was the best available WR, though many cite Berard Berrian. Just looking at stats, Javon gets the nod. Another knock has been that Oakland has been overspending, but who hasn't this offseason? As I read in another column, we have to face facts, players sure as hell aren't going to be taking a pay cut to play in Oakland.Al Davis is well aware of that as we can see and is obviously prepared to do what is needed to upgrade the team. So we need to get over the salary issue. Keep in mind it wasn't long ago they were crucifying Al for being cheap and not paying enough.

Please - oh God, please! Sign Kyle Turley! I'm begging you!
If you think Turley is your answer to your left tackle woes, please think again. And as for the reasoning "it would weaken the Chiefs", please consider this:
The Chiefs had THE worst offensive line in the NFL lat year, bar none. And they didn't bother to offer Turley a contract - what does that tell you?
So, please, from the bottom of my heart - sign Kyle Turley and stick him at left tackle. Then make sure Russell has his life insurance paid up.
Go Chiefs!

Awesome signing Drew Carter. They should keep Culpepper to mentor Russell, they're near the smae type of QB. I woulda kept Gannon around to become the QB coach, but that's a dead horse. I hope they don't even consider Turdley, take Jake Long or Dorsey/Ellis and use the next pick to fill DT/LT. I think the ship has sailed on anyone left to contribute to the OL in free agency. But really, Al loves speed, so he probably got hard over Dmac and it wouldn't surprise me if they went that way. Not the best move considering you need the line to block for the runners to begin with.Build the O-line!

Good pick up.
At this stage I think the biggest needs are with both lines. Let's use number 1 and 2 picks on them. Whether it's Jake long at 1, and a DE/DT with 2, or Gholston or Ellis at 1, and a LT at 2. McFadden is the sexy pick, but remember we have Michael Bush. He's no slouch, and probably desperate to prove himself.
We're only as good as those fellas in the trenches.

I think Al is trying to do what he used to with the signing of Carter. He has possibilities with his size and speed and if they can get him to perform he comes alot cheaper than Roy Williams.
Almost every moch draft I've seen has the Raiders taking Mcfadden or Dorsey. Al will do want he wants and I hope it's Gholston or C. Long and then trade to move up and take Clady. As many others have said, we do not have much luck with the first OL taken in the draft, the OL is deep in this draft with many first tier prospects. Drew Carter's signing points to nothing more than depth at the WR coming in the draft and if DC and JW pan out it will give us a chance to build up the LINES on both sides. Kevin Carter maybe a good signing, although he is not the player he once was he has the ability to play both positions and may at this stage in his career be better at DT because he can take up blockers. I don't think Turley is strong enough anymore to protect the back side of your franchise QB, he may be depth but only at bargain basement prices like Patrick says. DC's signing is pointing to Al stepping in again, I hope that doesn't mean Kiffin has no power like it has been suggested or maybe it means now in his second year he(Kif) is ready to start opening things up to help the short passing and running games.

I think with same offense for more than 1 yr (assuming Kiff stays), quarterback situation not up in the air, very good RB's and adding Bush, better receiving corp, we are already much improved. I just hope that any new Oline we pick up are quick studies, as the more time together in this system, the better. Either way, should be fun to watch us next year with even better run game and seeing Russell launch a few. Oh, defense should be better with Kelly back and our new safety aquisition, not sure if much improved would be the word, but improved some for sure (can't get much worse against the run anyhow).

Chris/Loadzy53/Worthless
The only thing that I was bashing, was your constant pushing of two late round picks down our throats, when the late rounds cannot even come close to being predicted/projected, and the fact that you make worthless threats on a blog like a 2 year old.
In fact, if you had any memory at all, you would know that I have lobbied for a WR and a DE for a long time, and I still think the Raiders should take one of each in the 1st two rounds. So actually, I am quite pleased with the days events, thank you.
Again, come up with you own ideas, and don't regurgitate other peoples as your own. I am sorry that you have been owned in every discussion board you choose to talk, but keep it to football buddy, cause these death threats are pointless, and as I pointed out yesterday, only serves to highlight your lack of knowledge.

loadyz53 WTF?
Anyway back to football. I like the pick, it spreads the defense and keeps Walker from being double teamed. We are still going to pick Ellis and a WR is still going to be drafted but now maybe in the forth round in lieu of the 2nd. Stay away from Turly, like Ryan says (good post for a none Nation guy by the way). Carter from the Bucs would not be a bad pick up but he is long in the tooth and might mentor ouir first round pick but not replace it. Good job thus far Mr. Davis and coach Kiffin....

Hold, we just signed Harris & we traded away picks last year to draft Henderson. One if not both of them need to be playing at the tackle spot(s). The pick needs to be Gholston is he is there.

Actually Chris/Loadzy53/worthless
I have talked extensively about WRs. In fact on March 1, 2008 @ 4:41 pm I wrote on the post titled "Free Agency Update: Oakland Raider targets Berrian and Stallworth are off the market, whats next for Oakland?" that.....
"I think that the best place to look for a WR at this point is in the draft. There are a lot of guys with a lot of upside that would fit in great on the Raiders. Malcolm Kelly, DeSean Jackson, Mario Manningham, Limas Sweed, Devin Thomas, would all be nice pickups in the draft."
So actually I have mention WRs several times in the past, and with the signing of Carter, I am pleased. However, I still feel a 2nd rnd WR is a good idea, especially if Manningham or Sweed drop. Don't make assumptions about me if you have not done the reading cause you are relatively new to the blog. And if you aren't new to the blog, who could tell, cause you always change your name when you are defeated in debate.
So, if you want to make statements, again, get them correct. Also, the first time, and even the 2nd and 3rd, that you mentioned Zibikowski, and Jordy Nelson, I was ok with it. But after that, it gets old, and it would be wise to educate yourself on players other than late rnd fliers.
By the way, Clemons was not a Draft pick last season, so he doesn't work with your logic of finding fillers in the draft. Also, I could care less if you made a compliment on my facts, cause that would make sense, cause I make sense, unlike your thoughts on occasion.
Also, whether or not you want/like/feel the Raiders need a RB or not, is not the issue. The issue is whether Al will take McFadden at #4 if he is there, and I believe he will.

Nice to have you back loadyz53.
So, what is the plan in the QB department. Walters has a good arm and will be great for WR and Bandit practice but if Russell needs a break because of an injury, sickness, inefficiency or something else, we NEED someone who might be just a heart beat away. Right now the draft can fill any need we have except an experience gunslinger with a mean clipboard on the side lines saying stuff like "Russell, throw the damn ball before that" and "Hey great 80 yard throw but we have to work on your victory dance" and especially "No Russell, you don't want to party with her after the game, trust me"........

Thanks Maverick. Yeah I am with you on that. I still am holding out hope for Quinn Gray who we brought in, but think the big fatty over in NY Jared Lorenzen can be had for nothing but for a higher offerr than what NY Giants have tendered (he was not drafted, therefore no compensation is given on a low tender). There are some veterans out there too, but nothing to write home about. I am curious how we plan on handling this problem as well. Good thought

unfourtanetly no matter what we do people say were gonna suck. Im not overly exicited about what were doing in free agency i wouldve preffered paying all those millions of dollars to Bernard Berrian instead of Javon Walker, but hey he has something to prove now hopefully he's full strength by the mini-camps and ota's. I think Kwame Harris was a good signing but i doubt he's the long term solution and signing Kyle Turley hahahaha. Might as well kept Barry Sims he's better than Turley.

I say with the 4th pick in the draft we have a few choices that all seem pretty sexy like drafting J. Long/ V. Gholston/ G. Dorsey/ S. Ellis/ C. Long/ maybe even D-Mac but i dont think D-Mac is a great choice becaus we need too much help on defense my opinion if J. Long isn't there then we take V. Gholston or last choice would be if anyones interested than we trade down. But the Drew Carter signing i think is greatly underrated he's like 6;3 6;4 and runs like 4.3 4.4. He might not have the production to back him up but hey look at who he was playing with S. Smith a guy who catches no less than 70 balls a season and previous to that he had been with K. Johnson and M. Muhammed, also J. Delhome dosen't have the strongest arm and he also dosen't seem to like to throw to anyone else but S. Smith. But now he's playing on a team where there isn't a number 1 receiver set. Maybe J. Walker will be the number 1 guy but D. Carter will see the field alot more now. If he has a good offseason he might even be the number 2 guy, this should also benefit R. Curry as the 3rd slot guy. He has good hands he's just not a number 1 guy. Well the other than G. Wilson we didnt do much to help our defense so in the draft we should mainly focus on defense unless we take J. Long in the 1st round. GOOD LUCK RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

You got me thinking Maverick. We have not heard anything on Culpepper finding a home, so I wonder if that might still be possible as well.
Here is a site that has free agents listed in a pretty methodical manner, maybe not the rankings on everyone, but gives a good idea.

Funny what he says about the guy I mentioned Lorenzen, but I think he could be a good back-up and is younger than most. Anyway, those are my thoughts there, but you might find someone else you like sifting through.

Posted by loadyz53, March 13, 2008 5:49 PM
Actually, just found this on NFL.com
Return to Oakland? March 13: Culpepper, who started six games for the Raiders last season, remains a possibility in Oakland, reports the San Fransisco Chronicle. The scenario is even more likely if the Raiders don't land former Jaguars quarterback Quinn Gray, who left Alameda without a deal after interviewing with team officials Wednesday.
So I guess it was said today, weird, oh well.

If we sign vet DE Kevin Carter, it would be great! The next thing would be trading CB Fabian Washington and a 3rd rounder next year for CB Deangelo Hall. I would then trade DE Derrick Burgess for a 4th & 5th rounder in this years draft. This would tell me that we are drafting DE in the draft. The pick could be DE Gholston which I'm cool with cuz we're gonna need someone to apply pressure at the end spot. And depending on how the draft goes we could trade down a couple spots to acquire an extra 2nd or 3rd round pick and still get a coveted player of need. Believe me, someone is gonna come calling about one of the top 5 picks to acquire Mcfadden. We just can't let a team like DENVER jump up there and grab him. I really think that team will be the JETS at #6. We could possibly trade down to #6 with them and acquire a 2nd or 3rd if they really want him. More than likely a 3rd. They have solidified their line over there and adding Mcfadden would be great for them, and the New York media! If this happens, this is who i think we should draft.
1) DE Gholston
2) DT Trevor Laws or DE Lawrence Jackson. Whoever is available
3) S Tom Zbowski
3) RB Reggie Slaton or RB Justin Forsett. Whoever is available
4) MLB Johnathan Goff
4) OLB/DE Marcus Howard
5) DT Jason Shirley or DT Carlton Powell. Whoever is available.
6) OG/C Pedro Sosa
7) WR Mario Urutia- Sleeper, steal of the draft just like RB Michael Bush was in the 4th.

I'm gonna use a "wait and see" approach on Drew Carter. Everyone on this blog seems to really like this move, but let's remember he didn't necessarily make noise while in Caolina. Yeah he's tall and fast, but I don't recall him doing anything to draw coverage away from Steve Smith over the last few seasons. Granted thier offense wasn't explosive, but it was better the ours.
Oh, and people, pray to God Al doesn't sign Kyle Turley. He looks like a Raider, but Barry Sims was better than he was and we just cut him.
#43
Posted by Juice, March 13, 2008 8:14 PM
Oh one last thing, since we do need a veteran to teach JaMarcus a little somethin', how about trent Dilfer? He did just cut by the Niners. What's one year out of him as a backup worth? that's easy, more than Andrew Walter.
#44
Posted by nilbymouth, March 13, 2008 8:29 PM
I would love to see us pick up Difler is a mentor / or QB coach type. He can't be relie upon much more to play bu would be a great mentor. Also Justin Hartwig would be a good adition to our line.
And unfortuantly Danny Clark as signed with the Giants. I thought he would have been a good pick up for us.

Posted by loadyz53, March 13, 2008 10:41 PM
Juice, good suggestion, did not know they cut Dilfer. He would be as close to ideal as we can get.

Kev, I like Forsett, good call. Have not researched anything on Uritia, you gave me something to do. I like Joe West in that round as well, or Marcus Smith if they last out. Both are from around my area, and I think they are worth a flyer. We all know I like Zibo, the guy is tough mentally and physically. Honestly, I think rounds 2-4 this year are going to produce some good receivers, solid #2's and #3's in the NFL.
#47
Posted by loadyz53, March 13, 2008 11:09 PM
I'm down with Urritia, seems as though a turf toe injury hampered him last year, and he might need some help with his hands, but god is he huge. I see why you are high on him, he could develop with some coaching, I mean you can fix a guys hands, just stand him in front of the jugs machine for like 3 hours a day.

Chris/Loadzy53,
You need to calm down, and realize that a debate is no reason to get upset, and when you do get upset, over a blog no less, you write things that only reflect badly upon yourself.
1. I never said I wanted to find you, hurt you, or anything else with you, rather you did. I could care less as its just a blog, but I though that needed to be cleared up.
2. Clemons was undrafted, true, but he was also a member of the WAS Redskins, not the Raiders, for two seasons, so again, your logic does not work here. Try, try again buddy.
3. I did not accuse you of using Zib and Nelson 100, or 50 times, rather more than 3, and if your computer is jacked, IT AIN'T MY FAULT!! DID I DO DAT!
I do not need a truce. This all got started due to your anger over my suggestion that you move on from Zib and Nelson and concentrate on more realistic picks that have a better chance of actually happening. Since that time, you have written post, after post, after post in an attempt to refute anything I say, all the while making false statements, ala your accusation that I had never mentioned WRs.
I have carefully answered and refuted all that you have said, and furthermore, I have proved it. If you can leave it alone and accept these facts, then OK, but if you continue to have 'temper tantrums' and make rediculous and outlandish false statements, I will continue to refute them, and you will continue to look foolish.
A truce!! Naw, this is a blog, and I like debate. Besides, there are only so many rediculous threats and false statements that a person can make before they lose my respect, and you passed that threshold when you got mad and started making empty death threats. If you can't deal, it's your problem.

Kev seriously? trade Burgess!? Why don't we just trade the whole team for draft picks then? Yeah good idea! We should at least trade a proven pro bowl player like Burgess for unproven mid to low round fliers. Great thinkin there buddy! Sarcasm aside, that was the dumbest idea I have heard in a while.

I like the Drew Carter signing, but I’m more interested in seeing if we sign Kevin Carter (DE). To me, that signals a move to a 3-4 defense, which Ryan prefers. That makes Kelly’s big payday understandable, because he’s a great fit as a 3-4 LE. Leave Terdell in the middle and then have Carter and Jay Richardson split time at RE. Burgess moves to OLB. Morrison and Howard in the middle. Then Golston looks like a good pick at #4 (or Howie’s boy, but he’ll be gone by then). Sands worries me, but he is well suited for DT in a 3-4 if he plays hard. Draft a big body in round 4 to back up Sands. Their moves just give me the feeling that this is where they’re going, and it makes a lot of sense. Ryan may be able to redeem himself if he gets a chance to use his preferred defense. Remeber he tried before, but just didn’t have the personnel (Sapp at DE, Brayton at OLB). He can make it work if they can bring in Carter, or another 3-4 RE.

I can pretty much assure you that if Dilfer isn't visiting with AD right now, he will be soon. He is a local guy and has proven he can be good in spot duty as a back up. And albeit he has never had great physical tools he is smart and that makes for a good backup. Although just because he visits doesn't mean he signs. Gray or Culpepper may be AD's first options there.
Chris: Seriously stop with the stupid childish little threats of "I will shut your fat mouth if I meet you". Just settle in with the fact that you say stupid sh*t and people are going to disagree with your comments. Also you WILL NEVER MEET ANY OF US which is lucky for you and I think you are well aware of how lucky you are that you have your anonymity on here. You are clearly a tortured, D&D playing, mamas boy, brooding, little, punk bitch. And when you say things like "you are a real enemy" you just bring it on yourself. Just shutup and talk football. The little that you know from reading magazines and regurgitating the information.

Oh for those of you who don't know; Chris = loadyz53. He changed his name because he got owned as "Chris" and now he has been owned a few more times as loadyz53 at which point we discovered his true identity. Well, other than being a little pansy that is.

I honestly believe that Al is looking to draft McFadden Lamont is going to be either cut or trade most like cut since people know were giong to do it anyways. Next Rhodes is going to be a draft day trade why else would he re-negotiate his contract to attract other teams. After all this that leaves with Fargas, Bush, Joe, and if I'm right on all this McFadden. I don't want McFadden to be our pick but I doubt Al will be able to help himself.

Loadzy53/Chris,
Wow, can you complete sentences? I can't really understand what you want to say, other than the previously stated "I want to kill you, hurt you, shut your mouth, blah, blah, blah." Again, your regurgitating. Great, I'm an enemy, and you want to hurt me! (for like the 10th time) And great, it means nothing! (the 1st time or the 10th time) Cause this is a blog, and you will never get the opportunity to try.
Due to the fact that your comments have nothing to do with football or the Raiders, it is obvious that you have no factual ground left to stand on, if you ever did. Thus, I'm taking that to mean you understand that ALL your arguments have been defeated. I am glad that you have finally come to this realization.
