Nnamdi Asomugha made the "exclusive rights" franchise player for the Raiders and other thoughts

Thanks to Raider X and L Dizzle both for their recent contributions to Thoughts from the Dark Side. I just got back from a couple of days in Santa Cruz feeling rested and refreshed. It appears that the Oakland Raiders went full bore and made Nnamdi Asomugha an exclusive rights franchise player meaning that he can't even talk to other teams and will have a much higher tender. The Raiders staff is at the combine, and things seem ready to roll for the upcoming draft.

* The Raiders would do well to lock Nnamdi down with a long term contract, less it turns into another Charles Woodson situation.

* Despite the ran, Santa Cruz is a beautiful place.

* Regardless of whether or not the long term deal gets done, Nnamdi is going to get paid this season.

* Apparently the earlier rumors of Lane Kiffin's demise were exaggerated.

* Let the free agent speculation begin in earnest.

* Albert Hanynesworth and Jarred Allen were tagged, there goes that dream

* Spent some time with the man who made me a Raider fan, my dad.

* I see some interesting comments on this site, if you want to try your hand at an entry e-mail me at mvnraider at yahoo.com

* Thanks to all who take their time to read and comment

* Despite not being in the 20 year category, it was nice seeing the love for a Raider legend and an inspiration to us all, Jim Plunkett.

Fargas is a great signing. He and Bush should be able to handle the load. It allows us to trade both Jordan and Rhodes for fraft picks which can turn into O-Line help in rounds #4-#7. Trade Porter for a 2nd rounder which turns into his replacement in either Manningham or Hardy.

With our own draft picks, round 1, pick #4, Vernon Ghoulston (OLB) follwed by either DT Balmer or Okam.

Rounds #3 - #7 we are looking at adding depth on the D-Line, OLB and a SS to move Huff to FS..

Step 1: Sign Fargas (well deserved)

Step 2: Sign Nnamdi (mandatory, especially concidering Fabian is in trouble)

Step 3: Sign Flozel from Dallas (oh pretty please!)

Step 4: Sing Gibril Wilson to play SS (moves Huff to FS)

Step 5a: Sign Bernard Berrian (covers need at WR)

and

Step 6a: Draft Glen Dorsey (no explanation needed)

OR

Step 5b: Trade for extra late Rnd 1/early Rnd 2, Take Ellis

and

Step 6b: Draft WR late in Rnd 1/early Rnd 2

Step 7: Find a OLB somewhere in Rnd 3-7

Keep in mind that the Raiders have some chips to trade in Jordan and Rhodes, and these guys can be used in a trade down to ensure and extra 1st Rounder or early 2nd Rounder. If a team gets to move up and get a RB, that adds a little weight and allows the Raiders to get what they need to get. Steps 1 & 2 accomplished, on to Step 3!!

I really don't think the situation Nnamdi will turn out like the deal with Woodson. The plain truth is the Raiders WANTED to be rid of Woodson for various reasons first and foremost of which was salary/salary cap related. And he wasn't playing anywhere near worth what they would've had to pay him for a bloated contract extension(Far more than GB got him for)They couldn't afford the cap hit if they had released him outright plus if he was going why not get something in return. He was a #1 pick after all So Al and and Bruce Allen gambled that he would refuse to sign the tender for $10 mil. as the franchise player which would've solved the cap hit problem and they would've been free of him and his enormous salary. It was actually a pretty clever plan. Unfortunately Woodson called their bluff and signed the tender so they gambled and lost. I thought it was the best move at the time, had it worked. The situation with Nnamdi is different. He will get the big contract from the Raiders he deserves in time.

I agree the Raiders need to upgrade but Flozell Adams would be a mistake. His age and size make him a liability in terms of longevity and zone blocking schemes.

It's not glamorous but I'd like them to draft the kid from Boise, Clady. It's true we need lots of other positions but after Clady there are some good OT's but they all have little flaws here and there. Other positions would be easier to fill in later rounds or FA pickups. Besides, it all starts with the ability to protect the guys with the ball.

How about a moratorium on the conversation about who the Raiders will draft? How can you say who we will draft if we do not know who we will pick up in free agency? For example, we know we need help on the offensive line. If we pick up Flozell Adams, this well lessen our need to draft an o-linemen. And then in the draft we have to wait for the three teams in front of us to make their selections. We could go into the draft knowing who we want but he might be gone by the time we pick.

Raiders have their work cut out for them -no doubt about it. We need some big boys up front both offensively and defensively this year. Okay, yes you could say the offense is showing improvement but they're a looong way away from competing with their division rivals because no one in the box is really explosive. On defense, no one can pressure the QB (I know Raider fans, same story all over the place). My thought; go get Chris Long (Parcells isn't going to start a rebuilding project with one draft pick in Miami). C.Long just may be around by the time we get our pick, maybe use some trade-bait like one of our 3 "expedible" QB's; trade Jerry Porter and his damn towel he wears with the big $ sign on it , pick up some mean guys like former Raiders -Long, Alzado, or Hendricks. With Warren Sapp gone, our defense may stink to high heaven this year. But let's be optomistic and say that they do find an Albert Haynesworth or similar. Rob Ryan is still the man and will pull all strings to get things going. Let's hope he finds some help for the D.line this year. I like him also as a head coach if Kiffin can't motivate and turn things around as Chucky did.

Last thing, I don't care what the rest of the league has to say about Al Davis. Davis does know football and knows how to build a team. I just hope he does it and doesn't take 10 years to get us back to respectability.

I didn't want to be the first person to say this, but since no other comments have yet addressed this side note, I guess I'll take the plunge:

I'm pleased to see you've finally come to the conclusion that some of us reached when the story first broke. Carry on, Montesquieu.
